Chapter 388: Candied Fruits
Chapter 388: Candied Fruits
In the end, Mineah’s wants won out as she and Nikolai found themselves making their way through the nearby public market to buy the fabled sweets that she was badly craving. It took a bit of convincing to make her husband go with her plan, but it would all be worth it in the end, she was sure.
That was, so long as their disguises lasted.
"I still think I couldn’t just make something for you in the cabin," Nikolai sighed in as they both walked through the streets with their flimsy disguises. "We didn’t have to go out here in the middle of the night just for a bit of sweets."
"But where’s the fun in that?" she pouted. "Besides, it’s much better for us to see the sights around us, and that’s on top of supporting the local business here."
Indeed, it was pretty much a spur of the moment for them to be out there in the first place. They didn’t even have proper disguises until a few minutes ago, and even then they were very much a patchwork job that would barely hold together if it went under proper scrutiny. Truly, if it wasn’t for Mineah’s constant goading and promises of a good time if her requests were heeded, then Nikolai would’ve probably just insisted that they had food at home and called it an evening. Unfortunately for him, she would not be denied her weird sugary cravings in the middle of the night.
"This is very much unlike you, isn’t it," Nikolai pointed out with a soft chuckle, having resigned himself to their current task. "I know you like your sweets, but you wouldn’t be this desperate to have them in the middle of the night."
"I know, but I just feel like it," she shrugged. "It’s just... I feel like having something sweet in me would make things better. And not just any kind of sweets too..."
She frowned as she focused on her current cravings. It was weird, but she really wanted something esoteric like candied grapes on a bamboo skewer or something similar. It was far out of her norm of just going for pastries and sweet cakes, but it wasn’t too far that it was suspicious. Yes, perhaps this was just a spur of the moment craving without too much health indications for it.
"Is that so? What kind of sweets do you want then?" her husband curiously asked. "I’m pretty sure all of the nearby bakeries would be closed at this hour. Maybe there are a few open stalls still open, but we’re not exactly in a big city where some establishments can remain open through the night."
"There’s still a few taverns and bars open if that’s the case," she quickly reasoned. "We can always just request something from them for more pay."
"If that’s the case, then why are we even here?" Nikolai scoffed. "I can always just cook it for you if you want."
"Eh, don’t question it too much," she defended herself with another pout, her arms quickly wrapping themselves around his arm. "Just think of this as a little date. I’m sure that’s what this is already anyway."
"Oh, it is," he chuckled. "And yes, that’s pretty much what this is. I’ll buy you anything you want. Just say the word, and we’ll get you your sweets."
Mineah smiled. "Thank you, now let’s see if we can’t find some sweets."
With that in their minds, Mineah let Nikolai take the lead as they walked through the quiet city streets of the nearby town. There were a few men and women walking about, and the faint light of the moon was the only thing illuminating their surrounding areas as they passed by stall after stall through the public market.
Much to Mineah’s annoyance, however, none of the food they were seeing scratched at the cravings she was having. While they were undeniably sweets based on their look and smell alone, they didn’t really taste appealing to her, which was saying something since she was eating through stall after stall anyway.
"Let’s go try that one," she said as she pointed at yet another stall of sweets, her hands still full with her previous purchases as she nibbled on her newest purchase. "Those look sweet too, right?"
"You’re still eager to eat?" Nikolai asked, a hint of worry in his tone. "You still have a lot of uneaten food on your metaphorical plate. You need to drink a lot of water."
"They just aren’t cutting it," she sighed even as she took another bite out of her sweet bread. "I feel like I can eat some more too, so there’s no worry about me not being able to finish all of this."
As if to further prove her point, Mineah promptly ate through the rest of her remaining food on their way to the next stall. She ignored some of the looks she was getting from some of the people who were looking at her weirdly while she ate. They were probably starting to notice how much she was eating, and she didn’t mind the attention so long as they simply minded their own business.
With her metaphorical plate now empty, Mineah smiled as she dragged Nikolai to the next stall she was about to buy from. Grabbing a few skewers of what looked to be actual candied fruits, she took one bite and her eyes immediately widened in satisfaction.
"Oh, this might be it," she announced to Nikolai. "We should buy more to take home with us."
"Are you sure?" Nikolai asked.
"Yes, I’m sure," she eagerly nodded. "The search is over. We can go back to the cabin now."
With a smile, Mineah gave way as Nikolai shrugged before promptly moving aside to let her husband clean out the stall for all of their product. Right after, they then went off with their spoils well into the night, both of them smiling in contentment as they enjoyed the rest of their evening.
