Chapter 294: The New Minister of Justice (2)

It was Teresa who would go first so Laura was escorted to another room to wait.

"Now, hear the case..." Milo said as soon as Laura was no longer in the courtroom.

Mineah watched eagerly as the two candidates clearly leaned in to listen.

"There are two mothers who go to the high court to settle a dispute. Both of them are fighting over a single baby, saying that they are the real mother of said child," Milo began. "Before you ask any questions, know that the two mothers lived in the same home and both gave birth to newborn daughters at the same time and that one of these had died. Each of the mothers claimed that the remaining baby girl alive was her own."

The candidates clearly mulled over their thoughts at the information given. Seeing as she also didn’t know the case, Mineah couldn’t help but try and solve the problem with the candidates.

"Are there no records on the babies after they were born?" Teresa asked. "Surely, the hospital in charge would make such records."

"The case was recorded in a time when laws regarding hospital records didn’t exist yet," Marion replied, not adding anything further as the point was already made.

"Are the babies identical then?" she asked further.

"No, they are not."

Mineah narrowed her eyes. The more she knew, the more she had a feeling that the only way to solve this case would be to see who was the real mother of the child.

"Your thoughts? How will you solve this case, Lady Teresa?" Nikolai asked Teresa directly.

Teresa squinted in deep thought before she replied, "I would try to launch a proper investigation to see who was telling the truth. There are spells to know one’s parentage, and I would employ exactly that to uncover the truth."

Mineah hummed in approval. That was a respectable answer.

"What is doing a spell is not an option to uncover the truth?" Nikolai pondered. He wanted to know the lengths Teresa was willing to go to and implore to solve this case.

Teresa’s forehead crumpled as she fell in deep thought. "If the spell is not an option then uhm..."

"How will you find out who is the real mother of that baby?" Nikolai was obviously pressuring Teressa for an answer. Mineah narrowed her eyes to her husband. He obviously already had an idea of how to solve the matter.

"How will you know who is telling the truth between those two mothers when each of them will give the same answers to questions you will have about the baby? Remember that they are living in the same home. Let’s just say that even the baby’s facial features were not enough to help in your investigation?" Nikolai continued.

The deafening silence reigned inside the courtroom.

"I will investigate and ask for witnesses." Teresa finally spoke.

"Hmm, let’s say that there are indeed witnesses and maybe that witness is the physician who helped them deliver the baby," Nikolai answered.

"Then this case will be decided upon the words of the sole witness," Teresa answered.

Nikolai simply nodded and that was how the case would end following the law but for some reason, MIneah felt like there could be more to it and she knew her husband was also waiting for more answers.

"Call for Laura inside," Nikolai then instructed. The test continued. Nikolai remained quiet as Laura gave the same answers as Teresa to Milo’s questions.

Like what he did to Teresa, Nikolai gave Laura the same scenarios where the spell was not an option.

"How will you find out who is the real mother of that baby? Let’s say there was a witness and it’s the physician."

"Hmm, sometimes witnesses are not that reliable. What if the physician is biased?" Laura pointed out, making Mineah inwardly smile. She was too curious about how differently her friend would handle the situation.

"I... would just have the baby brought to court and see how the two would react," Laura smacked her lips in thought. "This was done by the high court, so there were better things the court could do than to entertain two distraught mothers."

Mineah blinked... That was... highly irregular, and it would seem that Teresa thought the same as she stared at her fellow candidate in shock. Curious, she looked at her husband only to see that he didn’t even flinch at the answer.

"And what would be done to the child?" he asked.

"Again, I’d be looking for a reaction, so maybe threaten to chop the baby in half? Each woman to receive half." Laura casually replied as if not bothered by how horrendous that remark was. "The mother that begs for the child’s life would be the mother."

"And what if they both begged for the baby’s life?" Nikolai further questioned.

"That fake mother would surely not oppose the ruling. She might think that if she could not have the baby then neither of them could. Or possibly, she would say yes to the ruling because it would be fair in her eyes." Laura snorted.

And then with a serious face, she firmly stated, "I am confident that the real mother would give way and have her own baby given to the other woman for her baby to just live. Because a mother would do everything to save her baby’s life. That’s a mother’s love."

Silence reigned as Nikolai seemed to mull over Laura’s answers.

"Laura, what you answered was exactly what I’ve been waiting to hear," Nikolai revealed, much to Teresa’s shock. "While launching a proper investigation was the proper response, it would’ve been done by the Lower Court to save time and resources. We could do things faster by appealing to emotion. It takes not just knowledge from the books and laws to find the truth and do justice. I want someone who will not hesitate to implore just to make sure that justice is truly served."

Mineah couldn’t help but smile at that answer. Laura would be the new minister, it would seem.

"Laura, for your answer, you are to be the new Minister of Justice," Nikolai announced. "I hope that you serve your new station well."
