Chapter 295: To Gain Weight

That night, Mineah threw out a simple feast for Laura and the rest of those who passed the Civil Service Exams. It was held in one of the more spacious pavilions inside the Corvus Palace on the same day Laura was chosen to be the new Minister of Justice.

"All of you should have fun and enjoy yourself tonight. King Nikolai and I welcome you all to be his officials, and we do hope that you will all take this opportunity to perform and serve with the utmost care and righteousness befitting your stations," Mineah declared as she raised her hand up for a toast. "For the benefit of our citizens and our kingdom, congratulations to you all. We’ll be looking forward to working with all of you in the coming days."

"Thank you for your benevolence, your Majesty," those that gathered cheered. "Long live the King and Queen!"

With the opening statement over, Nikolai then signaled for the party to continue. Drinks were served, and lively music started playing for those present.

"We should go ahead, Mine," Nikolai whispered to her. "You must rest..."

"I’ll be right with you," Mineah nodded in understanding. "Let me just have a few words with my ladies."

Nikolai nodded back, and Mineah turned around to approach Laura who was currently having a few casual drinks with Dani, Zaila, Krisha, and Niran. She would’ve loved to join her shadow maidens now since they were in complete attendance, but it would’ve been awkward since they were also with other people at the moment.

"Your Majesty..." the four curtly greeted her with a wide and triumphant smile. Like her, they were overjoyed with Laura’s achievements.

Mineah smiled back at them before looking at Laura and said, "Congratulations, I’m so proud of you."

Laura’s face lit up as her eyes welled a bit. "Thank you so much, Your Majesty. I’m really excited to be here with you and the rest," she sincerely thanked. "I promise that I’ll do my best to do my duty. I won’t let you down!"

Zaila chuckled at her friend’s declaration. "Ah, we have a Minister in our ranks now. It’s only a pity that we’re not allowed to witness that final test," she jokingly sighed. "We didn’t even hear of it until news spread like wildfire of how our dear Laura got the position with her answer!"

"Laura truly worked hard to achieve her dreams!" Dani commented with a grin.

"It all paid off, even if I missed all of your weddings..." Laura murmured with a pout as her eyes darted to Niran, Krisha, and Dani. "But don’t worry... I’ll treat you all married women to something really nice as soon as our schedules line up."

"Wait, how about me?! I’m not a wife yet," Zaila complained with a frown. "Will I be left behind?!"

That comment made them all chuckle, and Laura snorted as she responded, "Hmm... of course, you’ll join us."

"Finally, I won’t feel like an outcast by being the only single shadow maiden in the palace. I finally have someone I can drag along with me to mingle with other men," Zaila excitedly hummed her eyes sparkling as she hugged Laura’s arm. "Ah, thank you so much for arriving at the right time, Laura. I really missed you!"

"What are you talking about? It’s not like you can drag Laura with you anytime," Krisha chided. "Remember, our Laura is technically the law now next to our King and Queen. She has an image to uphold, so don’t you try to taint her with your shenanigans."

Zaila pouted her lips at that, no longer commenting further as her eyes then darted to Niran and Dani.

"The husbands are approaching to take the wives soon, I guess..." she scoffed before she looked at Krisha and snorted. "Hmm... I do wonder if I will be happy that no one will take you away from us tonight to celebrate further. Or maybe I should pity you since while you do have a husband, you still have cold nights without him in your arms..."

Mineah chuckled at Zaila’s usual antics. Sure enough, her words came true as Raul appeared to take Niran away, and he was soon followed by Abel who then excused Dani away from them.

"Well, I hope the three of you that will be staying here for longer have fun because I have to leave now as well," Mineah stated with a wink and a wide smile. "I’ll make it up to you all soon though, and hopefully, all of us can hang out together. My treat."

"The three of us will definitely stay here, Your Majesty," Laura chuckled with a grin. "It’ll be a long night, and we’ll party till we drop."

Mineah nodded in approval before turning to walk towards Nikolai’s direction. Seeing her approach, her husband smiled at her as he lovingly held her hand. "Come," he offered. "Let’s walk our way to our residence."

She nodded, and they soon left the pavilion. The moon above them shone brightly, and their walk was both soothing and relaxing as they made their way back to their room.

"It’s been a while since we walked together under the moonlight like this," Mineah remarked with a smile. "I’ve always been in your arms lately while carrying me in your mist form.".

"I just like carrying you a lot," he hummed as he put his arm over her shoulder and pulled her closer to him. "But I’ve been noticing that you’ve become a bit heavier than before."

"I am? Well, it’s because they offered me good meals during my visit to the provinces, not to mention how we’ve constantly been to events that serve a lot of food," she murmured with a pout. She was a glutton even in the past, but she had never gained weight before. "Am I truly gaining weight?"

Smiling, Nikolai stopped walking, holding her by the shoulders as he made her face him. He then closely looked at her, and Mineah blinked as he gently pinched her cheek.

"Your cheeks are puffier now, Mine. And you look so adorable," he said with a grin as he played with her face. "I like that you’re gaining more weight."

"Stop that. You’re just making fun of me," MIneah whined. "I don’t feel like I gained any weight at all."

Nikolai chuckled at her response, and in one swift move, he scooped her up to carry her in her arms. "But I want you to gain weight..." he repeated. "I can’t believe that I fell behind Darius. I’ll have to make sure that you’ll gain weight soon as well, Mine."

Mineah’s face reddened as a thought came to her. She had almost forgotten about it, but he was probably talking about her sister’s pregnancy. She had been married before her sister, but it wasn’t like she had consummated their marriage during all that time. "Are we in a competition with them right now?" Mineah snorted

"Not really, but I suddenly felt like I haven’t worked as hard as Darius in making you pregnant..." her husband boldly stated with a chuckle, making her speechless as she stared at him.
