Chapter 293: The New Minister of Justice (1)

The next morning, Mineah remained in the palace because she wanted to be present in the final test regarding the selection for the new Minister of Justice. Nikolai had to oversee the test since he was the one who would choose and appoint the new Minister of Justice on the spot.

Mineah walked side by side with Nikolai as they both made their way to the Hall of Justice where a few officials were already waiting to bear witness to this final test for the two passers that tied the score at the top spot.

"Who do you think will get the position, Mine?" Nikolai casually asked as they neared their destination.

"I’d say Laura just out of bias, but it could go either way," Mineah lightly chuckled as she hugged his arm while they walked. "I trust Laura to know what she’s doing, but we can’t underestimate Teresa either."

Teresa was a wildcard that suddenly just appeared out of nowhere to take the test, after all. They didn’t expect someone from the Rossi Clan to even bother taking it since they were just humiliated. In fact, they would’ve probably just demanded that they have a member be put as a Minister of Justice if they really wanted to, but it would seem that they still had a member who wanted to do things the right way.

"Are you sure you don’t want me to just choose Laura?" Nikolai asked.

"I know you won’t do that, Lai," Mineah called him out with a cheeky smirk. "And besides, I trust Laura to know what she’s doing. And even if Teresa won, I wouldn’t mind it either way."

It was a win-win no matter what the outcome would be after this test. Should Laura win, then they’d have someone in their pocket to be the new Minister of Justice. If Teresa won, then they’d still have someone that they knew would take their job seriously without malice or bias.

"Well, we’ll see what happens then," Nikolai shrugged as he gave her a quick peck on her lips before placing his hand on the courtroom door. "Milo and Marion prepared a question for the two of them, and how they answer will be the one to decide their fate."

Nodding along, Mineah took a small breath before straightening her back. It wouldn’t do for her to look improper even if there were only a few people in the courtroom. She was the Queen, after all.

"Announcing the arrival of King Nikolai and Queen Mineah," the royal guards outside announced as they opened the doors for them.

Smiling, Mineah hugged Nikolai’s arm as the two of them entered the courtroom. There was silence as their footsteps were the only things that echoed in the courtroom.

"Your Majesties," Laura and Teresa both stood up as they bowed to the two of them. The court officials present also greeted them in chorus with a curt bow.

Nikolai simply nodded to all of them, so Mineah simply followed his lead as they made their way to the podium. With her husband sitting on the highest seat, she allowed herself to sit on the second-highest chair.

Milo, the Minister of Personnel, and Marion, the Minister of Rites would preside and lead the final exam.

"Today, we will be selecting the new Minister of Justice from the two of you," Minister Milo began, making sure to sound authoritative even as she enjoyed herself. "You two will be given a court case, and your judgment regarding how you handle said case will be the basis on whether or not you will be selected."

Laura and Teresa nodded, the two of them remaining standing as they listened.

"There will be no second chances. You two will have the same amount of time to answer the question verbally, and King Nikolai will decide on who will get the position for whoever could solve this case," Milo added.

"We’ll toss a coin to choose who would go first. The second one would be escorted to another room to wait." Marion explained.

Mineah quietly watched as things unfolded. She was not aware of the case they would give to the two women...

[What is the case?] she curiously asked Nikolai through the bond.

[I don’t know too, Mine. I simply let Milo and Marion handle this so we can prevent any false rumors... These two women want to compete fair and square so I strongly believe it’s only proper that no false rumor will spread like us being biased or giving away the case in advance knowing how Laura came from Ebodia and a direct representative from Ebodia.]

Mineah nodded in agreement. Both Milo and Marion were on neutral sides. Milo was from the Braun Clan and although Marion was from the Rossi Clan, he was also a part of the Wagner Clan since he was married to Exordium Sage and the father of Amed, the Minister of Works. Marion came from both opposing Clans. No one would dare spread rumors that the case given today was leaked to both Laura and Teresa for them to prepare for.

Mineah pressed her lips together as she scoffed, [Why did you even bother to ask me a while ago if I want you to appoint Laura when you clearly have this neatly planned?]

Nikolai chuckled at their bond as he replied, [Well, I’m curious if my wife will be biased for her friend or not, and besides... I’m still the King and the one who will choose in the end so if you ask me to choose Laura then there’s really no problem with going ahead with it. Besides, Laura has already proven herself enough by being first in the previous exams... I always have the right to question Teresa’s credibility to handle such a very high position after the incident with Haman. She is still after all a member of Rossi Clan and that whole clan was still under strict observation and investigation..."

[How cunning of you,] Mineah snorted and Nikolai chuckled.
