THE BILLIONAIRE'S VENGEFUL WIFE RETURNS -
Chapter 119: ONE NIGHT OUT
Chapter 119: ONE NIGHT OUT
When Harlow arrived at Layla’s apartment, she stepped out of the car and made her way inside. Layla, fresh out of the shower, was tying her hair into a loose bun when a knock came at the door. She hurried over, pulling it open to see her best friend standing there with an expression that screamed exhaustion.
"You’re here so early," Layla said, glancing at the clock. Realizing it was already 6 p.m., her lips formed a small "O." "Or maybe I’m just late in noticing the time."
Harlow sighed as she stepped inside. "I really need a place to cool off for the evening. If I go back to the villa in this mood, I might actually kill someone."
Layla’s brow furrowed with concern. "The meeting didn’t go well?" she asked, leading Harlow further into the apartment.
"Turns out my father wants Claudia as the lead in my movie because *she* said so," Harlow replied, rolling her eyes. "It’s my movie, and I’m not letting anyone make decisions for me this time, or bully me into a corner." Her tone was sharp, defiant.
"Oh, Harlow..." Layla sighed, sitting beside her on the couch. "What are you going to do now? You know as well as I do that man won’t stop until he completely ruins you."
Harlow’s lips curled into a bitter smile. "Let him try. His actions won’t go unpunished this time."
Layla’s expression darkened. "I’m sure Claudia is behind this. Why can’t she and her mother leave you alone? Haven’t they caused you enough misery?"
Harlow stayed silent for a moment. Her past life has been differen. She had thought things would be different if she divorced her scumbag husband and focus on her life, but it turns out things will never be the same again.
Layla’s face suddenly lit up with an idea. "I know a production company! A good friend of mine works there as the manager. We could talk to him and show him your screenplay. He might take an interest."
Harlow’s eyes lit up, her fatigue momentarily forgotten. "Really? Thank you so much, Lay!" Her voice cracked with emotion, tears of gratitude brimming in her eyes.
Layla smiled warmly. "Of course. We’ll also need to go through the list of actresses you have in mind for the lead role. You’ll get the cast you want."
"But tonight," Layla said with a mischievous grin, "we celebrate your movie, almost a success already!" She sprang up and hurried into her closet. Emerging moments later, she held up two dresses: one pink and soft, the other a glittering black mini dress. "You are not going out in anything boring. Pick one!"
Harlow raised an eyebrow. "Where are we going?"
"A club," Layla said nonchalantly, failing to notice Harlow’s suddenly stiff demeanor.
Harlow hesitated, not because she thought clubs were a bad idea, but because she had never been to one. Her past life had been suffocated by restrictions: a rushed marriage, no personal freedom, no experience to even know what she wanted. That lack of experience had led her to Alanis, and the scars it left still burned.
But this life? She had promised herself she wouldn’t hold back anymore. She would explore, experience, and live.
"Alright," Harlow said with a small smile. "Let me freshen up first."
As Layla applied her makeup, Harlow quickly showered. She emerged moments later wrapped in a towel, her hair damp and cascading in loose waves. Inside the closet, she settled on the black dress Layla had chosen, its shimmering fabric hugging her curves without being too tight. It hung just above her thighs, a bold choice for her first night out.
Staring at her reflection in the mirror, Harlow smiled faintly. Tonight would be her first time at a club, and she didn’t know what to expect. Turning to Layla, she asked, "Tell me the rules?"
Layla patted the chair in front of the vanity. "Sit down while I do your makeup. I’ll give you the crash course."
As Harlow obeyed, Layla started listing the essentials. "First rule: don’t take drinks from strangers. Second rule: if you leave your drink unattended for even a second, don’t go back to it."
"Why not?" Harlow asked, genuinely curious.
Layla sighed. "You really don’t know anything do you?" Lay asked and Harlow shrugged. "Don’t blame me, I’ve never been to a club before." She stated.
Layla sighed again and responded this time. "Because it could get drugged, and you’ll be in serious trouble."
Harlow’s lips formed a silent "oh" as realization dawned.
"And one more thing," Layla added, her tone teasing but affectionate. "If you lose track of me, just call me. Don’t wander off into random corners of the club, okay? Stay where I can find you."
"Wait," Harlow said with mock horror. "You’re going to leave me on my own?"
Layla shrugged playfully. "Oh, absolutely. You’re married, after all, while my father is demanding I get hitched before the year ends. I’m on a mission tonight."
"And you think you’ll find a husband at a club?" Harlow asked, raising an eyebrow.
"At this point, anywhere works. I just need to find someone so my father gets off my back." Layla rolled her eyes in frustration. Ever since Frank Blackwood threatened her family, her father had been insufferable, demanding she marry into a powerful family to gain allies.
Harlow’s expression softened. "I’m so sorry, Lay. I’ve been there, I know how suffocating it is." Hers was even worse, her father had brought in an old man to be her husband.
Layla waved it off, smiling. "Don’t worry about me. Let’s focus on tonight. We’re here to have fun, remember?" She stepped back, admiring her work as she finished Harlow’s makeup.
When Harlow opened her eyes and looked in the mirror, she barely recognized herself. Layla had worked her magic, transforming her into someone confident and radiant.
"Lay, you’re amazing," Harlow said, genuinely impressed.
"Of course I am," Layla said with a wink. "Now let’s go!"
Both women stepped out of the apartment and into Harlow’s car. As they drove toward the club, Harlow quietly repeated the rules in her mind, committing them to memory.
"You’ve got nothing to worry about," Layla said, reaching over to squeeze Harlow’s hand. "Just have fun."
