Chapter 127: Now, It’s My Turn
Zevian patiently waited by the car parked in front of their house, arms crossed, looking visibly frustrated. His dark brows were furrowed, his eyes ready to shoot daggers and kill anyone who dared to talk to him.
Nearby, John stood quietly, already dressed and prepped for whatever task awaited him today. He wasn’t foolish enough to ask questions, especially not with his boss in a mood like this. Little did John know, he had somehow become the tag-along bait for the day, trapped with the trio.
Before Zevian could release another sigh, a squeal of excitement greeted them from the main door.
"Daddy!" Kiana’s voice chimed brightly, running down the large marble steps of their house at lightning speed. She stopped right in front of him, twirling around in her new outfit. "Look! We’re all matchy-matchy!"
Zevian glanced down at his own attire, blue jeans paired with a simple white t-shirt, and then at Kiana, who wore a white top and jeans. Turning his gaze back toward the house, his eyes landed on Evelyn, who was descending the stairs. She too was wearing blue jeans, her shirt was a white color-blocked one that twinned with them perfectly.
"We really are," Evelyn joined them, smiling brightly at her husband. But it wasn’t enough to change his sour mood.
Zevian opened the door for Evelyn and Kiana to hop into the backseat. "Where exactly are we going today?" He asked, taking a seat beside his daughter. Evelyn was the one who planned their date today and hadn’t given any details this morning, except to take an entire day off.
Evelyn simply smiled and replied, "John knows the direction. He will take us."
Even Kiana had no clue, but she didn’t care as long as she was tagging along with them. "It’s a surprise, Daddy! Mommy didn’t even tell me!" she chirped.
Zevian’s brow raised and he finally smiled at Evelyn, but she shook her head, unwilling to spoil them. He glanced at John in the driver’s seat, who gave him an awkward, tight-lipped smile, clearly uncomfortable with knowing more than his boss.
The drive took them out of the bustling city and into the countryside. The scenery shifted from tall buildings to rolling green hills, and the fresh air started filling the car as they rolled the windows down. After nearly an hour, they reached their destination, it was the Reign family’s farmhouse.
The estate was vast, with fields of crops and greenery spread out in every direction. A large barn stood to the side, and a small vegetable garden was visible not too far from the main house. Fresh produce and ingredients were regularly delivered from this very farmhouse to the Reign family home, keeping their pantry stocked with organic goodness.
As they stepped out of the car, Zevian’s eyes scanned the familiar surroundings, though he still didn’t quite understand why they were there. Even Kiana frowned and asked, "Why are we here?"
Evelyn turned to face them, her lips curling into an excited smile. "We’re going horse riding today," she declared, her voice pumped with adrenaline.
Zevian blinked, his eyes widening in surprise. Horse riding? It had been years since he’d been on a horse, ever since the accident five years ago that ended his car racing days. He had lost the excitement of doing any kind of sports. But deep down, Evelyn knew how much he missed the rush, the thrill of competing, and she had planned this to bring a little of that back into his life. Horse racing wasn’t quite the same as car racing, but it could be just as exhilarating.
"I thought it would be fun," Evelyn stated, bringing him out of his thoughts. When he looked at her, she added with a wink, "And a perfect opportunity to defeat you again."
Zevian chuckled softly, shaking his head. She was reminding him of their car racing days, and all the dates that almost ended up as challenges.
Meanwhile, Kiana’s eyes lit up at the mention of horse riding. "Yay! I want to ride a pony!" she exclaimed, jumping up and down.
John stepped in then, offering his help. "I’ll be with her. I can guide her through the basics."
But Kiana quickly shook her head, her small hands clinging onto Evelyn’s. "No, I want Mommy to ride with me!" she insisted, her voice full of determination.
Zevian clenched his jaw, biting back the urge to roll his eyes. Of course. Once again, Kiana was hogging all of Evelyn’s attention, and he knew it was going to grate him the entire day.
Evelyn pressed her lips, holding back her laugh at his expression. Jealousy suited him better than anything else. Turning to her daughter, she agreed easily, "Alright, sweetie, we’ll ride together."
Zevian shot her a frustrated glance, but Evelyn simply smiled at him, unfazed. John, now stuck without a task, awkwardly shuffled to the side as they made their way to the barn.
Inside, the smell of hay and leather filled the air. Several beautiful horses were lined up, their glossy coats shining under the soft barn light. Evelyn helped Kiana pick a gentle, brown horse named Daisy, while Zevian chose a sleek black stallion that looked more than ready for a challenge.
After fitting their protective gear, helmets, and vests, they all mounted their horses. Kiana sat in front, gripping the saddle horn as Evelyn gently guided their horse into a trot around the field, getting Kiana accustomed to the rhythm.
As they paced around the field, Kiana giggled in delight. "Faster, Mommy! Faster!" she urged, her small hands holding onto the saddle tightly.
Evelyn smiled behind her. "Hold on tight, then," she said, urging the horse to a faster pace. The wind rushed through their hair as the horse picked up speed, Kiana’s laughter echoing through the open field.
Zevian, watching from a short distance, felt a tug of competitiveness spark within him. He had always been a pro at horse riding, and so was Evelyn. Narrowing his eyes, he trotted up beside them, a challenging smile on his face.
"You think you can beat me, huh?" Evelyn asked, her voice loud and playful.
Zevian glanced at her, his eyes glinting mischievously. "I know I can," he shot back, giving Dazzle a gentle nudge to go even faster.
Kiana squealed in joy as the horse galloped forward, and Zevian immediately urged his horse to catch up. The two raced across the field, their laughter mingling with Kiana’s delighted giggles as they sped past the barns and trees.
But in the end, it was Evelyn and Kiana who reached the finish first, with Zevian trailing behind by mere seconds.
"We win!" Kiana declared victoriously, throwing her arms up in celebration.
Zevian groaned, but the smile on his face betrayed his true feelings. He had enjoyed it far more than he wanted to admit, and letting them win wasn’t that bad.
As the afternoon wore on, they spent the rest of their day exploring the farm. Kiana happily picked flowers and chased butterflies while Evelyn took photos of her and Zevian, capturing sweet, candid moments. Zevian even allowed himself to relax, his earlier frustration long forgotten as he watched his daughter and wife having fun.
By the time the sun began to set, Kiana was utterly drained. She had fallen asleep in Evelyn’s arms as they sat on the porch, watching the golden light fade into twilight.
"I think we should head back," Evelyn whispered softly, brushing a stray hair from Kiana’s forehead.
Zevian shook his head, a small pout tugged at his lips that amused Evelyn. "Not yet," he replied firmly, his gaze shifting to her.
"There’s a place I want to take you," Zevian added, his voice low but tinged with mischief. Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat at the sudden change in his tone.
"But-" Evelyn looked at Kiana on her lap. If this little devil wakes up and finds they were out, she might start troubling the poor workers here.
"I will take care of her, Ma’am." John stepped forward, assuring Evelyn with a smile. When Zevian nodded, he carefully picked Kiana, gladly ready to care of their little princess for a while. A little bird from the house had already informed him what happened during breakfast, and he decided to help his boss.
Before Evelyn could further protest, Zevian held her hand and made her stand up. His lips curled into a sly smile as he led her toward the barn again. "She’s had you all day," he grumbled, his voice tinged with jealousy. Leaning closer, he whispered in her ear, "Now it’s my turn."
