Chapter 126: The Third Wheel

The next morning started on a usual note, with Kiana grumbling to skip school. She had dozens of reasons why it was necessary to stay home today, but her mommy wasn’t going to fall for it.

"I will study more tomorrow, Mommy. Pleasee~" the little girl pleaded with a pout. She blinked her innocent eyes and rolled on the bed again, unwilling to get up. Last night had been so much fun, and she wanted to go to a party today too.

"Your tests are nearing, Kia. You can’t skip classes," Evelyn replied in a serious tone. Picking Kiana up to sit her upright, she tried to negotiate, "How about you go to school, and I will try to convince your grandpa to let you skip your tuition for today?"

Kiana’s eyes instantly lit up at the idea. Yes, she would do anything to avoid ending up in John the Jailer’s study room! He had been working so hard to tutor her, torturing her so much that she hated going to the Reign Mansion these days.

"Mommy’s the best," Kiana agreed, instantly pouncing on Evelyn, making her chuckle out loud.

"Alright. Let’s go. We’re already late!" Evelyn patted her daughter’s head. Picking her up in her arms, she made her way out to get her ready for school.

Once Kiana was all set in her baby blue uniform and cute pigtails, Evelyn took her to the dining table for breakfast. They were greeted by Zevian, looking all handsome and set for their date in his regular outfit. Opposite him was Avery, finishing her third glass of lemon water.

"Who told you to drink so much?" Evelyn scolded her best friend. Helping Kiana sit on the chair beside Zevian, she took a seat next to Kiana and smiled at him. They shared something through their eyes that the little devil between them didn’t fail to notice.

"I kept waiting for you!" Avery tried to defend herself, groaning as the headache stopped her from speaking. Clutching her head tightly, the poor woman cried again, making Evelyn shake her head.

"And you had to take off today, of all days?" Avery grumbled, glaring at her friend. When Evelyn mentioned earlier that it was for a date, she had been all happy and approved immediately, forgetting that she had to manage the company alone today.

"You approved it already! You can’t back out now," Evelyn replied, warning her not to dare.

Avery scowled in response and drank the hangover drink. Even if she dared to back out, her cousin would just cut off her head and kick it like a football. She couldn’t take such risks, especially after signing such a golden project with him.

Kiana, who had been listening to the adults’ conversation, couldn’t help but furrow her eyebrows. Putting down her milk glass, she turned to Evelyn and asked, "Are you on holiday, Mommy?"

"Yes, sweetie," Evelyn replied with a smile. Wiping Kiana’s milk-stained mouth, she then helped the little girl eat her salad.

Kiana’s brows furrowed further, her suspicion growing. It was odd how her robot Daddy, usually seen in a suit early in the morning every day, was in casual clothes today. Were they planning to go out somewhere without her?!

"Why?" Kiana asked again, her voice a louder this time.

"They are going on a date," Avery replied, regretting it almost immediately. She bit her tongue and looked at Zevian apologetically, who had clearly warned her to keep her mouth shut in front of Kiana just a few minutes ago.

Kiana’s expression changed from surprise to anger and then to sadness. Looking at her mommy, she asked with a pout, "Are you two going out without me?"

Before Evelyn could reply and coax her little bear, Zevian declared, "Yes, we are!"

Kiana turned to her daddy, glaring at him. Huffing loudly, she placed her fork down and declared, "I want to come too!"

"No, you’re going to school," Zevian refused, having no intention of taking her. Yes, she was a kid, but that didn’t mean Kiana would always get all of Evelyn’s time.

"No, I won’t," Kiana retorted, standing up on the chair. "I’m coming with you!" she declared, crossing her arms and challenging Zevian with a glare.

Avery felt her headache hit again, and she totally deserved it. She looked apologetically at Evelyn, who was now glaring at her. If this father-daughter duo started a fight, hell would break loose in the house.

Kiana continued indulging in a glaring battle with her annoying daddy. But she knew how to make him agree with her. "Mommy will come with you only if you take me," the little girl declared, leaving no room for argument. Turning to Evelyn, she tugged at her sleeve and asked, "Right, Mommy?"

"But Kia—"

"So, you don’t want me to come too?" Kiana cut Evelyn off mid-sentence. Tears formed in her eyes, and though she tried to innocently blink them away, they spilled out and flowed freely on her cheeks.

"I will be good and study more in the evening. Pleasee~" The girl continued, her sniffles making Avery shake her head.

Evelyn’s heart ached at her expression. Kiana knew exactly when and how to use the emo card, and it seemed to work perfectly this time as her mommy sighed and agreed.

"Alright, we’ll take you."

Avery felt like running away as the temperature around them dipped. A shiver ran down her spine when she caught Zevian’s expression, darker than a stormy night sky. Feeling her gaze, he turned around to her, causing Avery to instantly jumped from her seat.

"I-I have a meeting! I’ll see you guys in the evening... If I’m still alive," Avery murmured, before bolting out of the dining room.

Evelyn looked at Zevian, who clearly didn’t like the idea of a third wheel tagging along. "Just this once. Please," she murmured to him, her pleading expression enough to convince him.

Zevian sighed loudly and nodded, finally agreeing. Evelyn smiled at him and turned to the little devil between them, who was barely holding back her grin.

"Let’s change you into something comfortable," Evelyn said, and Kiana gingerly nodded with a smile. Jumping down from the seat, she held onto her mommy’s hand and walked out.

Zevian looked at his daughter, and feeling his gaze, Kiana turned around. Her lips curled into a smirk, and she stuck her tongue out at him, making the poor man sigh again in defeat.
