Chapter 206: The Locket

Mu Heng opened the door of the ward and went in. The woman was lying on the bed with her eyes closed.

Mu Heng looked at the nurse.

"She was awake ... a while ..ago." the nurse stammered. She was afraid of this powerful master of the Mu Family.

Mu Heng sat on the couch and closed his eyes. He was disappointed. He thought that he will finally be able to speak to her. He suddenly remembered what transpired two weeks ago.

Mu Heng spent that weekend on the island. He bought a small island for his eldest daughter that he never got a chance to see. He named the island Xianmin which was the name he gave his daughter. That Sunday will be her fortieth birthday. He started coming to this island since ten years ago to atone for his sins to his child and her mother.

If only he had looked for that woman earlier, then maybe he could have seen his daughter. But the past was past and what happened cannot be undone.

When his wife died because of an illness, he did not remarry but spent his resources to find the woman who conquered his heart when he was still in college and in a foreign country. He could not forget the pair of cute dimples that made her smiles even more captivating.

Ten years ago, he sent people to Green Heights to investigate. It took some time before they got back and report to him.

"Master, the woman married seven years after you left Green Heights. She was disowned by her family because she got pregnant out of wedlock. Despite having a child, she had a lot of admirers but she waited for the father of her child. However, she had some difficulties and was left with no choice but to marry when the man, Mu Lingyun did not look for her for seven years. Her husband treated her well, however after ten years, a disaster struck at Green Heights. Their house was swept away by a storm surge. She and her husband drowned while her daughter was missing."

After receiving the news, Mu Heng locked himself in his room for three days. "Ning Ning, I am sorry I broke my promise to you. I never came back. Now I am not sure if my daughter is still alive or not. I cannot find her no matter how I try."

He felt remorseful but somehow he was comforted when he learned that her husband treated her well.

He woke when the sky was still dark that morning. He was restless and he could not go back to sleep. He decided to head out and stroll along the shore. He took his coat with him.

His butler has also woken up when he felt there was a movement in the living room of the villa.

"Master, it is very dark and cold outside. Why are you going out?" the butler asked in a concerned voice.

"I can’t sleep anymore. It will be sunrise soon. It is good to get the morning sun."

The butler has no choice but to accompany his master. When they went outside, the east was already splashed with warm yellow and pink hues as the sun peeked teasingly from the horizon. It was a beautiful scene.

The old master frowned when he noticed that there were a lot of things littered on the shore. There were wooden planks and lots of garbage.

"There wasn’t a storm last night, right?"

"No master. Let me check the news." The butler took out his cell phone and checked on the news about the weather.

"An unprecedented phenomenon happened on the West Sea at 3:00 am this morning. A tornado for some reason appeared and wreaked havoc along its path destroying a few fishing boats and two yachts. A total of thirty people were confirmed dead as of 5:00 am. We don’t have the count of missing persons yet." the butler read the news to his master.

"Oh, such a disaster happened and we are not aware of it. It’s a good thing that this island was not affected. Get someone to clear the debris later."

They continued to walk when something caught Mu Heng’s attention. Not far from them, a person was lying on the sand. The frothy waves seemed to crash over the lower part of the person’s body before it was partly swallowed by the sand or pulled back into the sea.

Mu Heng hastened his steps. He was shocked to see a six centimeters gush that started on the woman’s head and ended on her right forehead a little over her eyebrows. Her hair was caked with blood and her body was literally covered in bruises and small cuts.

Mu Heng felt an inexplicable sorrow in his heart. The woman looked very young. Her face was covered in blood so Mu Heng cannot make out her features. He felt her pulse and it was very faint.

"Call the helicopter. She is still alive but barely. Send servants to bring the first aid kit. Let’s treat her wounds while waiting for the helicopter." His voice was urgent. The butler was surprised to hear a slight tremor on it.

’Why does Master seem to care about this unknown woman? It is not like him at all. Is it because this happened on his island?’

The butler was efficient. In just five minutes, two servants from the villa arrived on an electric trike with the first aid kit.

They removed the sand on the woman’s wound by pouring over clean water. After the big wounds were free from sand and dirt, they poured over the disinfectant. As there were so many wounds, the woman’s body was literally covered by the reddish brown colors of the iodine povidone.

After the wounds were treated and disinfected, the few people surrounding the woman can only wait for the helicopter. The servants wanted to move the woman earlier but Mu Heng stopped them. The young woman might have internal injuries and moving her might aggravate them.

Mu Heng squatted down to cover the woman with his coat. Something caught his attention. A ray of the sun hit her chest and the chain of her necklace glistened. Mu Heng lowered his gaze to the pendant that was nestled slightly above the collar of her black blouse.

The old man’s hand trembled as he gently held the pendant. He bent down a little bit to study the pendant. It was a twin-heart locket. The design was very unique. He turned the locket over. He could not read the inscription at the back without his reading glasses but he felt the engraving with his thumb.

"Where is the helicopter? What is taking so long? We have to save her no matter what!"
