Chapter 146: Meeting a Scammer

Chapter 146: Meeting a Scammer

Aryana unbuckled her seatbelt.

"What are you doing?"

"I’m gonna take a look." Before Erik can say another word Aryana already opened the door and went out to check on the woman.

"Are you alright?" Aryana asked in a concerned voice. She scanned the woman who seemed to be in her early fifties and plainly dressed. She looked pale but seemed not hurt at all.

"Madam, next time be careful when crossing the street. You are lucky that Miss Jones stepped on the brake in time." The driver scolded her.

"Mom, are you alright?" A young woman in her twenties wearing a blues dress rushed towards them and hugged the middle aged woman she called mom.

She glared at Aryana and said harshly. "You! How can you drive recklessly? Is it because you are driving a Maybach? You almost hit my mother." She blurted out angrily.

"I wasn’t driving recklessly. My speed is just 60kph. Your mother suddenly appeared in front of our car." Aryana has to keep her temper in check. She wasn’t a bitchy person, but when she meet an unreasonable one, she became bitchy. She didn’t want to be bullied anymore. She had enough of that in the past.

Since the older woman wasn’t hurt, Aryana turned around to go back to the car. She didn’t want to waste anymore time with unreasonable people. She did not want to drive anymore so she walked towards the passenger side of the car.

The woman in blue grasped Aryana’s arm when she passed by her.

"What are you doing?" Aryana asked. She looked at the hand that was holding hers. "Let go." She said in a cold voice. She sounded like Erik.

"Are you going to leave just like that? You have to pay for the emotional stress that my mother suffered because of your reckless driving."

Aryana felt blood rushed to her head. The woman sounded so arrogant and it angered her.

"Miss, if there is someone who suffered from emotional stress then it should be me. I don’t want to be mean but your mother suddenly jumped into the street like she intended to be hit. I can show the dash cam if you like." She twisted her arm and just like that, she was freed from the woman’s grasp.

The woman in blue looked baffled. ’How did she do that?’ She was pissed off. She wanted to vent her anger and looked at her ’mother’.

"You’re so useless! It is just a simple task and yet you cannot do it." She reached out and held her wrist tightly. Her mother winced in pain and tears started falling from her eyes.

Aryana saw how tightly the woman in blue held her mother’s wrist and she knew that the kind of grip she was using on her mother must be hurting her. Aryana reached out to grasp the hand of the woman in blue. She pinched it. The woman in blue winched in pain and she released her grip on her mother’s hand.

"How dare you hurt me?" She shouted at Aryana.

A crowd has started to gather and watched them.

"How dare you hurt your mother?" Aryana glared at her.

"That’s enough Linette. Let’s go." The middle aged woman finally spoke.

The woman called Linette looked at her furiously. She raised her hand to slap her but Aryana also held her hand and restrained her.

"This is between me and my mother. You as an outsider has nothing to do with it."

Aryana thought for a while. She was right. It was their private matter and it has nothing to do with her. Aryana let go of her hand and she turned around to leave but she felt a sudden pain in her scalp.

Linette grabbed her hair and pulled her back.

"Let her go!" A cold voice permeated the air. Linette froze and she felt a chill run down her spine. She let go of Aryana’s hair.

Erik’s gaze lingered on the the middle aged woman whose head was bowed.

"Sonia?" Erik hesitated. She looked at Sonia. She has aged so much that he wasn’t sure.

Sonia looked up and her eyes brightened. It seemed as if she suddenly saw a ray of hope.

"Sir Erik. It’s you." Sonia’s voice was almost inaudible.

"You know her?" Aryana asked.

"She was my nanny." Erik answered.

Traffic has started to build up and the cars behind them were honking impatiently.

"There is a cafe over there. Let’s go so we can talk properly." Erik gestured towards the cafe.

The driver went back to the car while Erik, Aryana and Sonia walked to the direction of the cafe. Linette followed behind. She was looking for an opportunity to escape.

"What bad luck. How come that useless woman know that man?" She muttered to herself.

When they were on the cafe, Aryana noticed that Linette was not following them.

"Where did your daughter go?" Aryana looked around trying to find the woman in blue dress but she seemed to disappear in thin air.

"She is not my daughter." Sonia’s revelation shocked both Erik and Aryana.

"She is working for a syndicate and their modus operandi is to target expensive looking cars and scam the drivers. We are their pawns and we took the risk of being hit by a car just to extort rich drivers with their money." she explained sadly.

"How did you fall into their hands? Didn’t you get married that’s why you left?" Erik asked.

Sonia lowered her head as if she was trying to hide the guilt in her eyes.

"Your step mother sent me away. She gave me money. I was pregnant at that time. Sir Erik, only you can help me now. Please save my daughter. She ... she ..is.. your half sister." Sonia stammered.

Erik clenched his fists.

"How did it happen?

Sonia’s eyes reddened. "Your father was drunk and Madam Martha was heavily pregnant at that time.. and he.. he. " Sonia cannot continue with her words.

"It is alright. You don’t have to say it if you are not comfortable." Aryana’s soothing voice was comforting.

A waiter approached their table and passed a note to Sonia. Sonia’s hand trembled as she opened the note.

’Lure the girl out and send her to us or you will never see your daughter again. We will set you and your daughter free in exchange of her. -X’

’The note is from Boss X? He is here?’ Sonia’s thoughts were in chaos. Her facial expression turned ugly but only for a second. She rearranged her expression to look calm. Life has been hard on her. In order to survive she had adapted the ways of the syndicate. Erik and Aryana caught the subtle change in her expression.

"You can come with us at the office and I’ll contact the police."

"No!" Sonia spoke too loud that the customers in the other tables looked at them.

"Sorry." She murmured. "Please do not call the police. My daughter will be in danger." She pleaded in a soft voice.

"Okay." Erik conceded.

Sonia secretly studied Aryana while sipping her tea. ’What a pretty face. No wonder Boss X is willing to exchange her for our freedom.’

Sonia was pretending to drink her tea but she was racking her brain how to lure Aryana.

"Sir Erik, I need to go back so they will not suspect me."

"But aren’t they going to suspect you already because you meet with us?" Erik was skeptical.

"I can just tell them that we had coffee and talked a bit as I used to work at your home." Sonia replied calmly and Erik nodded.

"I have to buy some necessities for my daughter but I am not familiar with this place. Someone just dropped me off and will pick me up later." Sonia was looking at Aryana with a pleading look.

Aryana looked at Erik. She was trying to convey a message which Erik understood.

"I can accompany you. By the way, my name is Aryana."

They did not linger in the Cafe. Before getting into the Maybach, Erik took out the few bills he had on his wallet and gave it to Sonia. He also gave her his office contact number.

"Call me and let us meet again to discuss about your daughter. Sorry, I don’t keep much cash in my wallet. For the things that you will buy, Aryana will pay for those." Erik was apologetic.

"Sir Erik, thank you for your generosity."

Erik left for the office while Aryana and Sonia went to the nearby mall.

Sonia selected three dresses and a pair of sandals and grabbed the toiletries. Aryana accompanied her to the counter to pay.

The dresses were quite expensive. Bu t Aryana did not mind at all as she was paying with Erik’s money.

After paying, Aryana accompanied Sonia to take a taxi. They did not wait for long as a taxi stop right in front of them.

"Aryana, I can drop you off at your office before I go to Palms Ave." Sonia offered.

Aryana nodded and she got inside the taxi. She messaged Erik that she was now in the taxi."

"So you are Erik’s nanny?" Aryana asked.

"That’s right. I took care of him when he was four years old until seven."

Before Aryana can ask another question, she lost her consciousness.
