Chapter 81: You’ve Ten Days

Chapter 81: You’ve Ten Days

ZINA

Daemon stood, and surprisingly, he stretched out a hand to aid her. Zina eyed the hand suspiciously and refused to take it.

Instead, she supported herself upright, reeling from the very stupid words she spewed. She knew that Daemon was not the kind of man who believed in prophecies and whatnot, so she was aware that he was hardly fazed by her threats.

But why had she gone ahead to spew those words? And why was Daemon acting like everything was fine? Hot and cold... Zina couldn’t deal with that.

Was the storm finally over? Or was it just beginning? Zina was beyond exhausted, and she was only realising that she was equally as hungry.

Would she ever deal completely with what happened six years ago? Would her sins disappear by a fake show of strength on her own side? Or by a temporary alliance with him?

"In that case I shall look forward to your great contribution to my eventual reign." Daemon said, his voice bland and all emotion on his face wiped till there was not a single smidge left.

It only bothered Zina more and far from allayed her fears that Daemon had finally let go of the matter.

"I shall leave with him then." Zina said, making to leave with the South Heralder who was still sprawled on the floor throughout her exchange with Daemon. Surprisingly, Yaren NorthSteed was there too at the entrance like an unmoving block of rock.

His eyes were currently narrowed on Zina, and for all the hate Daemon was unable to show, Yaren’s withering stare more than made up for it.

"You shall not be leaving with him or anyone else for the matter." Daemon’s chilled voice halted her in the act of helping up the battered, bloodied man.

"Do you really intend to take me South with you?" Zina said, remembering what Seraph had told her about earlier.

"I did...." Daemon said in the same freezing voice, "And you’re yet to make your move." He said, chancing a glance at the scattered heavy marble pieces of the wolf chess board.

Zina stared at the pieces too, anger coursing through her as she rightfully felt as if she was in a more dangerous trap than the kind Eldric set for her.

"The game is over." She muttered, for she truly wished that would be the case.

"When the pieces are scattered you simply put them back in place." He said, levelling her with a smothering gaze. "You must make a decision now, either you travel North alone with the protection of Alpha Prince Falcon and the rest of your retinue save for this spy and your female maidservant, or you travel South with me and I will let them all go.

Zina’s heart missed a beat as she realised that Daemon was far from being over with her despite their deal.

"You do not trust that I will hold the end of my deal?"

"How can I ever trust a lying woman?" Daemon responded without missing a beat. "The only thing I can trust is my authority over the life of the ones you act like you don’t care about but actually do care about."

To be honest, Zina’s heart stung from those words and the fact that she had come to represent someone so conniving and a chronic liar when in reality she never asked for this life.

All she had ever wanted was a family and love. And yet, there she was struggling to hold onto the reins of power because that was the only thing that could seemingly save her against the man that the moon had fated as her second chance mate.

Her pitiable fate was repeating itself like a horror dream. She might not have been rejected, but Daemon NorthSteed was far colder and far heartless than Jacen Vampage was.

But unlike Jacen Vampage, his heartlessness was not without a foundation. It was her lies that had caused this; the lie which she told to save the family she thought loved her had now taken away any chance of love she could receive with a second chance mate.

Now, all she could do was pathetically guard and harden her heart. She will continue on her dreadfully lonely path as the Theta, while Daemon will continue on his as the banished prince who had won the war.

"I will travel back North and prepare your path as the new Alpha King." She said with resignation, straightening her spine. "In return, I shall never forgive you if any harm is to come to this man or my maidservant." She threatened with the most lethal voice she could muster.

Daemon didn’t react to her threat.

"You’ve ten days." He said as Yaren gestured for a warrior to carry out the Southern Heralder who hadn’t shown any signs of life.

"You will be back in ten days?" Zina asked as she watched the body of the man being dragged away. From the East, the South wasn’t that far. It could be reached with one day of hard journeying.

What was Daemon planning to do in the South by the way?

"Instead of thinking about when I will be back, I will advise you to think about the many arrows that target your back. The Alpha King you serve wishes to take your head, are you even aware of that?"

The only horrible thing about Daemon’s words was the fact that Zina showed no shock on hearing them. Like she expected that much from the man she had apparently dutifully served for six years.

The way they thought of her so easy to eliminate made Zina reinforce her decision to reach the rank of high priestess of the Arctic North. Today it was Eldric, tomorrow it might very well be Daemon.

Daemon observed her reaction through hooded eyes. "Together with the White Monks, and even the Temple that apparently adores you more than anything in the world." He added.

The second group of people shocked Zina, but it would be insulting for her to show her enemy just how chaotic and unhinged her life had gotten.

Staring straight into his eyes she spoke as if his revelations were not a secret to herself. "Travelling with Alpha Prince Falcon is just enough for me. If you’re in need of cannon fodder for your journey to the dry lands, then do help yourself."

And with that, Zina walked out of the tent. The Temple Knights, Eldric’s Special Werewolf Army, and the Epsilons could burn in hell for all she cared.
