Chapter 82: All That Has Happened
ZINA
Zina felt like she could breathe a little better when she was out of the tent and equally out of Daemon’s presence.
Her hand was resting on her chest as she tried to regulate her chaotic breathing when a gruff voice sounded behind her.
"Make sure that you remain useful to my brother until the very end, Zina WolfKnight. For the day you shall become useless, I will be the one that will end your life."
Zina whirled, facing the man that seemed to possess such profound hate for her more than Daemon NorthSteed did. One would think that Zina would catch a break from having her life threatened so much to the point that such a threat was fulfilled at a juncture, but in the never ending circus of her life, it would seem as though catching a break was a foreign despicable notion to her.
It went without saying that strangely, Daemon was closest to his half-brother Yaren. Just as it was six years ago and even now, Yaren always stood staunchly by Daemon’s side. Their brotherhood and camaraderie was much talked gossip for the context of their closeness was termed unusual by the tenets of hierarchy in Vraga.
No legitimate born werewolf, talkless of one that was a prince, ever mingled with the son of their father’s mistress. For while many trampled on the notion of a true born mate, the sanctity of true bred pups was still kept to.
"In that case," Zina responded to Yaren, "I must make sure to never be useless to your brother."
She walked away from his contained simmering anger, feeling greatly weary. She honestly didn’t remember Yaren as one to be so collected. In the sparse encounter they had six years ago, he was so hot headed, but now, he almost imitated Daemon’s calm with an ease that was really unsettling.
The moment Zina stepped into her tent, Seraph was all over her.
"Are you fine? What did the banished prince say to you? Surely he doesn’t really mean that we will be travelling South?! If we do, then the Alpha King will find enough reasons to finally make a move against your life! What if...."
"Seraph...." Zina cut the animated girl off in a weary voice. "No more questions, and for your information, Eldric has already made a move on my life."
"What?! But... but you’ve been nothing but careful. Does he know about the things you’ve been doing on behalf of the banished prince?" Seraph finished with a whisper.
Zina flashed her a pointed stare that said ’I thought we agreed on no more questions’. Finally she answered. "I do not think it matters if he knows or not. I’ve always known that he is the kind of man that wouldn’t allow his spotlight to be shared with a mere woman for long. He has condoned me enough for six years, it’s been a long time coming."
Seraph’s nostrils visibly flared from anger. "That vermin!"
Zina began to close all the flaps of the tent, including that of the window and the entrance until their surroundings were thrown into a pitched darkness.
Seraph, understanding what she was doing lit a candle, the small light illuminating her face.
"Bring a mirror." Zina said as she undressed, allowing her dress to pool at her feet.
Seraph approached her with a small mirror in hand and the lone candle that illuminated Zina’s bare shoulders. Through the mirror, she stared at the four marks on her.
Seraph sucked in a breath, staring too. "I do not know whether to call this your good fortune or not."
"It is nothing," Zina said brusquely, "I do not plan to be involved with Daemon NorthSteed more than I already am.
The candle illuminated the maidservant’s slight frown through the mirror. "You do not mean to complete the bond?"
"I do not mean to take the bond in the first place. Besides, I must keep to my vow of chastity if I should become a High Priestess."
Seraph’s eyes took to a mischievous glint as she said, "I do not believe that the High Priestess Cha’lie will agree with you."
"Seraph!" Zina chided, heat rising on both their cheeks as they burst into laughter. High Priestess Cha’lie, one of the three only High Priestesses that existed in all of the Arctic North, was a woman whose extracurricular adventures at night was a much told tale among a selected few that knew of the woman’s affairs.
It wasn’t until recently that the Thralgor Spy Guild acquired information on such a tale in one of their wide scale information gathering operations performed solely on the high class of the Arctic North.
Not like Zina had any desire to act on that information. Cha’lie was also known as the scorpion lady, for she was as vicious in the day as she was carefree under the sheets at night.
Turning serious, Zina inquired, "I want to know everything that has happened since I was abducted."
Seraph turned serious too as she began to narrate everything that happened. Zina listened and took it all in. From how Seraph fell off the cliff and they lost contact, to how the journey retinue returned back to the camp of the Army Without An Alpha.
Zina listened as Seraph told about how Daemon was reluctant to send a rescue team to rescue her, and how he managed to involve the WolfKnight’s in the so called mission of rescuing her.
Zina stiffened on hearing about the WolfKnight’s, but shrugged off the fact that said pack was currently staying dangerously close to them.
Seraph told about how the Matriarchy had mysteriously intervened in the war just as Zina witnessed before Xoli had taken her away. However what had given her a stop was when Seraph narrated that when she travelled to Ravgid with Ablanch when Zina herself had turned up missing from the camp, that Daemon had reportedly met with the Matriarchy.
And it was that said meeting with the Matriarchy that had prompted Daemon to track down Zina with the hunt mark.
"Why did they meet? What are the details of the meeting?" Zina inquired, that feeling that something was wrong grating on her nerves.
Seraph sighed. "I heard the meeting was heated and only a few were in the banished prince’s tent when it occurred. That is about all I know. I myself was already on my way to Ravgid after sending Elder Sybril a letter updating her on our status. Ah, that reminds me. Elder Sybril sent back a letter stating that she has done as you requested and warned us against the Temple Knights."
Zina squeezed her eyes shut as her brain tried to process the barrage of information. "The banished prince already informed me." She simply said, tugging her dress up as she stood.
Seraph shivered. "Which means more than half of our retinue were after your life, Theta. How do you wish to proceed?" She asked grimly as she stood by Zina’s side.
"I have already told the banished prince he is free to do with them as he pleases." Zina said, about to breach a hard topic with the girl that had stayed firmly by her side for six years. "I will be travelling back with only Alpha Prince Falcon and Ablanch. I am afraid I will not be taking you with me.
The mirror the maidservant still clutched in her hand clattered to the floor as the candlelight illuminated the look of shock she wore.
