Chapter 80: Was It All For Power?!
ZINA
Zina had always feared the day that she would meet the man called Daemon NorthSteed. She had imagined the thousand ways their eventual encounter would happen, but this was nothing like how she imagined it would go.
She was beginning to realise that she knew absolutely nothing of the man that she had dreaded meeting for years. She thought of him as cold and unfeeling...as a man that would definitely swallow her whole, and yet what she got was a man that dreadfully confused her.
He was nothing exactly as she imagined him, and it drove her insane. He was cold alright, but not exactly too cold. Cruel alright, but not exactly too cruel. He was harsh alright, and yet, his harshness was carefully shrouded in the careless way he laid bare his half thoughts...the careless way his eyes roamed over her figure like she burned his world.
But did she really burn his world? For it was beginning to seem to her that he burned hers even fiercer.
"Are you sure about that? Believe me, sex is really good despite the apparent aversion the Matriarchy has for it."
Those crude words caused her heart to stop as she stared wide eyed at him. He was unaffected by what he said, but the same couldn’t be said for Zina who was well aware of her bleak lack of knowledge on the subject matter.
Her cheeks heated, and against her wishes, she averted her eyes from him. Her palm at her sides balling into a fist.
"What?" Daemon sounded surprised, "you’re blushing at the talk of sex when you didn’t for once take your eyes off me before."
Zina rested a furtive glance at him. "What nonsense!" She protested, forgetting how close they stood. Her abrupt turn now put her face so close to his that she could see his eyes, and the storm that swirled in it.
No words... she had no words to describe it. It would take ten years of seeing the physical world and all the wonders and pain in it for Zina to form a proper description as to what those turbulent eyes looked like.
But even without knowing how to describe it, she knew that those eyes teared and bared at her soul... that his eyes clawed and gnawed at her heart like a carnal thing in heat.
Heat rose to her cheeks, and Zina wanted more than anything to disappear into the ground. A careless forbidden smile tugged on Daemon’s lips as if he could see through her.
Could he see it though? How much his eyes stripped her? How much it almost undid her?
"Just how much knowledge do you lack?" Daemon’s voice taunted her, his breath caressing her neck like the brush of early winter wind. "Are you really unaware that you’re missing an entire world of pleasure with your hotheaded vow?"
Hotheaded vow?
An entire world of pleasure....
Zina vowed not to show him how much those words tempted her to imagine said world of pleasure. She tilted her chin stubbornly, their bodies still pressed so close. She knew she had to step away from him in order to escape the fog that was clouding her brain, but Zina dared not to for fear that Daemon would see a speck of hesitance on her side.
No, she Zina WolfKnight would stand tall before him. If Daemon was going to become Alpha King, she would not allow herself to be played as a fiddle by him as Eldric did with her.
"I shall stand as I have always stood as the incorruptible Theta." Zina responded to his taunting, albeit tempting, words. In a much haughtier voice she continued, "Why wait on an entire world of pleasure when I can have power that most women can only dream of."
Before she could process it, Daemon clutched the neckline of her dress, slamming her harshly against the Wolf Chess table. Zina, stunned, felt the breath knocked out of her while she fumbled for a standing but only managed to hold onto air as she was unceremoniously sprawled against the table.
The pieces on the table clattered to the floor noisily and some dug into her back while Daemon was breathing down on her again. His eyes were now darker, and it looked like the colour of hate. Zina revolted against his grip on her, struggling to escape all of him.
"Power?" He sneered. "Is that all it has always been for you? I understand how a woman as pathetic as yourself would falsely accuse me just to save a pack that doesn’t want you, but was the other reason behind what you did for your position as Theta?"
Daemon looked genuinely angry, although the anger flickered like a flame being brought under control. Zina quit struggling under his grip, her features hardening under his harsh interrogation.
She admitted that she had been utterly foolish in her venture to falsely accuse Daemon NorthSteed, but on the night she died, she had vowed to never beat herself up over what had happened. Not when she too was a victim in this case.
Knowing that it was insanely foolish and irrational, she spat out. "Why don’t you claim my life now and then?!" She taunted him. "What? Are you not angry enough?! Or do you fear that you’re not powerful enough! Do you hesitate because a fickle bond now ties us together?!"
Daemon said nothing, and it only motivated her further. She smiled shrewdly as she observed the conflict that rioted in his eyes together with his anger and a dash of annoyance. "Fine! Since you’re not bold enough to claim my life, then let us be clear on our roles...."
"What?" Daemon asked, thoroughly dumbfounded at her unfounded rudeness.
In a deathly low voice, the kind Zina used in order to sound otherworldly, she began saying. "You might be the man who shall become Alpha King for I am aware that you’re aware of many prophecies that preach of your greatness, but I am the woman who shall perfect that prophecy...."
"....?"
"If I do not say that you’re the Alpha King ordained by the gods, then you too will be rumoured a blood alpha as Eldric is rumoured too...."
"...?"
"If I do not proclaim you Alpha King, then be prepared to have your reign fall easily like a stack of cards, so I would advise that you do not form to think that I am a thorn you can easily rid of."
Daemon laughed darkly, the sound echoing in the tent. His dark eyes finally rested squarely on her, equal parts stunned and annoyed.
"Do you tell a vision against me?"
"I do not need a vision to see such a predictable fate."
