Chapter 45: The Five Great Evils
Chapter 45: The Five Great Evils
MOON
"You do not look like you slept well." Sybril said to Zina the moment she stepped into the Moon Shrine.
"That is because I haven’t." Zina responded brusquely.
Zina had missed sleeping at the place, but with Eldric constantly needing her of recent, she found she could no longer indulge in her escapades.
The elderly woman observed that Zina was dressed in a ceremonial black flowing gown studded with moonstones on the neckline. The gown, while modest, was cinched at her thin waist with an exquisite robe, before flowing down in a pool that the woman would have thought would be uncomfortable except Zina seemed to walk in it with an unnatural grace. The long sleeve of the gown was slitted up until the elbows, lending her a regal younger look.
Zina’s long white hair was packed in an exquisite updo, and her eyes were hidden beneath a white blindfold.
"You are all dressed. What is the occasion? Or should I say ceremony?"
"I am to meet with the Theta of the IceSavage pack." Zina said casually as they strutted through the ever flowing hot spring in the shrine. Despite the fact that the wetness hung at the tips of her ceremonial gown, making it heavier, she showed no discomfort.
"Agh. I heard about the case. Coercing someone to reject the sacred bond is a huge crime indeed. One that calls for you to tread with care." Sybril warned.
Zina merely shrugged. "I am well aware. I shall be careful."
"Is that why your blindfold is on today?" Sybril observed.
"Seraph tells me I look more intimidating with it on." Zina simply answered.
The maidservant who was trudging behind them blushed, hiding her face.
Sybril chuckled. "She isn’t entirely wrong. People are always intimidated by the unseen rather than the seen. It is the strange way of our world."
"You summoned me? You have something to say?" Zina inquired without beating around the bush.
"I do indeed." Sybril started grimly, "The Temple scouts report there has been sighting of bald werewolves around the Temple. Specifically, they’re mostly seen only when you visit the Temple."
"What about them?" Zina asked, not quite following.
Sybril sighed, "You know of the White Monks."
"I’ve heard of them. They’re a religious organisation devoted to following the way of the Great Beast Wolf." Zina mused. Confused, she asked, "why are you bringing them up? They stay all the way at the Iron Coast, no?"
Sybril sighed again in the manner that told Zina the elderly woman was about to tell a story. "Have you heard of the five great evils during the Great Purge? Doing the days of old, there was a potent rumour that the Deformed werewolves originated from the five regions. In order to curb it, five great evils were created for each of the five regions. Here in the Arctic North, the Night Mages served as the great evil, while in the Iron Coast in the west, the White Monks served as the great evil. They were so relentless in their pursuit of the deformed that they all degenerated into the dark side, pushing their wolves to great lengths that were unheard of."
The story Sybril told wasn’t new. What was new was the perspective that it was put into. Zina had come to learn and understand that their histories were muddled for lack of technological advancements during the times of old. As such, one story could have varying perspectives.
Zina tilted her head slightly at the woman to show that she was following her story.
Sybril continued. "However, when the Deformed were finally purged, the five great evils in a bid to continue feeding their source turned on the werewolves. Instead of hunting down the deformed, with abhorrent practices, they hunted down werewolves. They maimed, killed, sacrificed...." Sybril clicked her tongue in disgust.
"Necromancy and dark magic of all sorts became a norm. Powerful packs united and tried to curb their powers, and they were successful. However, it wasn’t a total success which then led to the establishment of the Temple to serve as a sort of unified watchtower for all the regions. That time saw the distinction of high ranked packs and lower ranked packs. It was also the time that marked the beginning of kingdom rule in the Arctic North, ushering one of the most united werewolf rule in the entirety of Vraga. The five great evils still do exist, but their movements are restricted, and their actions watched closely."
Zina mulled over the woman’s words, allowing the story to sink in. She had always been grateful to have someone as wise and knowledgeable as Sybril for an advisor and ally. "You must be trying to tell me something if you had to delve into a whole history lesson?"
Sybril smiled a grim smile, taking the blindfolded woman in. "If the Night Monk’s sent someone here to spy on you, then it must mean they are determined to do something to you."
The horrid words hung in the air between them. "Do something to me?" Zina asked incredulously.
"They would not have recklessly moved their people here without reason. They must have had a meeting, made a decision, and are finally acting on such a decision."
"And what do you think this decision might be?" Zina asked in genuine bafflement.
Sybril paused, as if unsure of how to say her next words. Finally, she said. "To take your life."
Zina stilled, incredulity zapping through her body. "And why would they want my life? Is it the Alpha King? The banished prince? What could it be?"
"I do not know."
"Don’t tell me you do not know." Zina said with a bite to her tone. A headache came over her together with the urge to massage her temple. The soothing sound of the waterfall, and the natural smell of the space slapped against her nostrils like a drowsy thing.
"I truly do not know. However there’s a rumour of some ancient prophecy that was passed down from the ancestors of the five great evils."
"What does this prophecy say?"
There was another silence.
"I do not know."
Zina merely sighed, finally giving into the urge to massage her temple. After collecting her thoughts, she straightened her spine. "It is a good thing then that there is a long queue. I am afraid it will take some time before their turn comes."
Sybril frowned. "It is no laughing matter, Theta."
"What will you have me do, Elder Sybril?" Zina said more out of exasperation than annoyance. "I cannot indulge in another guessing game when I am running against time. I’ve things to do... things to put back in their rightful place. So please, forgive me if the thought of some bald, castrated men being after my life does not exactly excite me."
"Theta," Sybril said sternly. "I can be a party to the future you dream of, but I will not be a party to your death—premeditated or not."
"Do you know what he asks me in my dreams?" Zina asked with a dramatic wave of her hands, "he asks me if I can see the day that I will die? Do you know the answer to that?"
"Theta...."
"I cannot see it." Zina gritted, her exasperation ebbing at the edges. "I, Zina WolfKnight, chanted the great seer do not know a thing about my future or even my past. So forgive me for not meeting any expectations you’ve of me."
"Theta..."
Brusquely, Zina interrupted the woman again. "I shall now take my leave. I fear the Theta of IceSavage pack will think that I’ve met with my demise on the way to meet her if I delay anymore."
After a moment of hesitation, Sybril finally conceded with a slight bow. "Be well, Theta."
