Chapter 46: The Law Of Sevens

"What have I done to warrant the visit of the gracious Theta of the NorthSteed pack." Theta IceSavage said while pouring the blindfolded young woman before her a drink.

The woman in question possessed black raven hair against ominous, cloudy green eyes. Compared against Zina, they were both like night and day... light and darkness.

Zina simply straightened her spine, her hidden eyes on the woman in a manner that would have been slightly disconcerting if not that the IceSavage Theta had seen her fair share of disconcerting things. A shrewd smile tugged at the corners of Zina’s lips. "Sister, must you do something for me to visit you?"

The dark haired Theta merely curled an eyebrow at the endearing term. "I suppose not." She said, sipping at her drink. Her eyes roamed over the other woman in suspicion.

Zina sipped at the tea that was served, but immediately spat it out in feigned disgust, some of the liquid sloshing against the other woman’s face and dress. Bryle IceSavage, a woman of noble birth that she was and and the prestigious Theta of the IceSavage pack guffawed in horror at the act, her jaw dropped open.

"What is the meaning of this?!" She screamed, wiping at her face as if to get the liquid off. She only ended up smearing it all over.

Zina slapped her palm against her lips in mock horror. "The gods, did that touch you? Please do forgive me, my lack of sight must be blamed for this blemish. Besides, the tea didn’t agree with my tastebuds."

Bryle simmered from barely contained rage at the blatant lie. It was after all a known fact that even though the Theta of the NorthSteed pack was without physical sight, her senses were even sharper and far more honed than that of an average werewolf.

"Why have you come here?" The woman gritted, resorting to using a handkerchief to wipe the mess.

Tired of playing games with the woman, Zina dove straight for the reason why she was there. "Do you know the law of sevens, sister?"

"What about it?" Bryle snapped.

Zina’s easy smile hardened, turning to steel. "I asked if you know them." She said in a more hardened voice that gave Bryle a start. The woman looked at the pale skinned Theta with an almost silvery light hair tethering between white and ash.

"I do know about the seven valid reasons that allow for a werewolf to reject the divine mating process."

Zina smiled a sweet smile that was even scarier than her hardened one. "Then you must know that the son of a prestigious Alpha coercing his subordinate to refuse the bond is a serious crime."

The other woman paused, her mind racing with thoughts although not out of fear. She had suspected that was the reason the Theta was visiting, but it was still a surprise to confirm the same.

"Are you telling me you’ve come to my shrine to utterly disgrace me just because of something so insignificant?!" The woman screamed, peeved at the mere thought of the fact.

"Insignificant?" Zina spoke in a deathly still voice that echoed against the shrine of the IceSavage pack they were in. "Do you think going against the law of sevens is something so insignificant?"

Snapping, Bryle exploded. "Only someone with an ancient mindset such as yourself would think the Law of Sevens is relevant! That law is as old as a musty set of discarded clothes!"

It took everything in Zina to not react at the other woman’s goading. Truly, what had Zina expected from the woman? It was always hard for people that deemed themselves so mighty to relate with the sufferings of the common people, and Bryle was no exception.

"In that case I shall recite the law to you." Zina said in a fake sweet voice. And then she began to recite it. "Hear this Vraga. That the moon goddess has blessed us with a fated mate bond. That we shall enjoy an otherworldly union bestowed by the heavens and not the earth. This bond, while binding on the followers of the moon goddess can be refused for seven reasons...

"Firstly, where there is a great disparity in the social status of the two mated. Secondly, where there is a lack of a wolf by one of the mated. Thirdly, where there exits a Pack rivalry between the two mates. Fourthly, mental instability of one of the mates. Fifthly, where a fated mate has already acquired marital status. Sixthly, where a destined mate is a rogue, and lastly, where a destined mate has committed treason against their own pack."

Zina’s recitation was met with expected silence. Bryle shifted uncomfortably knowing that as far as the law went, Brestom was in default by coercing his subordinate to reject the bond for no valid reason. But the thought of succumbing to the whims and manipulation of a woman such as Zina, who had only gotten to her position through heinous lies made her blood boil.

"That law is only for the weak!" Bryle spat contemptuously, "Brestom is the son of the Alpha who will inherit the same position. It is too haughty of you to think that your power as Theta is enough to pull him down! Albeit a power acquired by deceit!"

Zina barely reacted to her outrage. In an even lower voice she threatened. "I shall have Brestom IceSavage stand trial before the Temple."

"What?" Was Bryle’s stunned response.

Voice collected, Zina rattled on in a tone that didn’t give space for much objection. For some strange reason, her determination to see the matter till the end had become personal.

"You might be the Theta of the IceSavage pack, but it seems to me that you’ve forgotten that it is I who is in charge of the whole of the Arctic North. As such, it is my responsibility to enforce the law on behalf of the council of five alphas."

"Indeed, I know of your greatness Theta WolfKnight," the woman spat sarcastically, "but for whatever reason would you have to go against the Brestom pack? Especially when you’re just a dying woman!"
