Chapter 360: Spoilt Queen (II)

ZINA

Of all the attitudes Zina had learnt when subjugated by Eldric, an overbearing attitude towards the servants of the castle was one things she couldn’t bring herself to act out.

Even when some of the maids and servants sneered at her back then, Zina had been cordial inspite of the fact that she learnt well enough from Bella how to treat servants badly.

But now, seems she would be putting all she learnt to use.

As she expected, the so called stewardess kept clutching her cheeks, but otherwise made no move to retaliate. That only emboldened Zina even more.

"Now kneel while you speak to me. Maybe then, I will understand who this Master you speak of is."

Seraph stared at her with wide eyes like she was seeing Zina for the first time. Zina tilted her head up, hands akimbo while she waited for the steward’s next action.

"I am afraid this is unacceptable, my lady." The woman gritted, her voice still holding an edge but evidently more mellowed down than before, "this might not be the mighty castle where you once lived at, but in this mansion, not even the lowest servant kneels when serving a guest. We only kneel to Master Rowan."

Zina didn’t bother attempting to slap her again. She would definitely see it coming and block. So instead she turned away from the woman.

"If you will not kneel, then find a servant that would kneel. If not, I am afraid I won’t be taking a step away from this room. Nor shall I be meeting your esteemed Master Rowan."

"My lady, the Master summons you and I am to drag you should it come to it."

Zina didn’t bother to turn. "Seraph, please close the door. The steward of this manor gives me a terrible headache."

Seraph smiled wickedly. "Yes, my lady."

The woman probably didn’t expect that Seraph’s small figure would pack any strength, but shock filled her face when the girl shoved her like a stack of cards.

The steward tumbled backward while Seraph found footing to close and bolt the door.

"Thet... I mean, Zina. What are you planning to do? Is inciting them the best way to go about our current condition?"

Zina sat on the lone chair before a vanity dressing table. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, "the only way to know our enemies is to do the unexpected and watch for their reactions. That stupid Red Wolf tossed me to the WolfKnights who were poor as dirt at the time. Even though I’ve lived in the Ice Castle for six years, I am sure he expects my manners to be no less than that of an abandoned village girl. Fine, today, I shall put up a show for him. Enjoy it my dear while you’re it. I fear the next servant is already here."

As expected, a harsh knock sounded on the door yet again. The person responsible tried to pry the door open but was met with resistance. Seraph had bolted it this time around.

"You can open it, Seraph. I’m sure they must have sent the butler this time around." Zina said.

Seraph opened the door, and a well dressed tall woman with a stern expression entered, three maids behind her.

"You’re summoned." She said curtly, her words holding the velvet promise of violence should Zina resist.

In reality, Zina had no intention of resisting as she did with the steward. This woman was of a higher position obviously. Definitely more difficult to handle.

Zina picked one of the handkerchiefs on the dressing table and held it over her mouth, faking a cough.

"And who are you?" She asked in the meekest voice she could muster.

"I am the Steward of this household. The Master respectfully invites you to breakfast."

The steward? So the other woman had been pretending?

"And the one before you?" Zina continued in her damsel in distress voice, "she also claimed she was a steward."

Zina could sense an eye roll coming off from the woman, but she held back. It would seem the last woman was in the habit of impersonating her position to guests.

"That is not your concern, please follow me."

Zina fake coughed violently into the handkerchief. "I’m afraid I cannot. The fake steward who was here startled me with her wild behavior and now I’ve been driven to sickness."

The steward frowned. "Are you saying you caught a cold from the way she spoke to you?"

Zina coughed some more, then sighed loudly. "How will you possibly understand the difficulties of a privileged woman. Back at my husband’s castle, the maids always spoke in the lowest most hushed voices. But here, I’ve barely woken up when a wild woman’s voice startled me. I am afraid, I’m not used to such brashness and it has given a cold and a terrible headache. I must miss this breakfast you speak of."

The woman frowned harder. It seemed she was debating on the best way to drag Zina out. "The Master doesn’t mind. He definitely will not catch your cold so please follow me."

Zina scoffed lightly, "who is worried about your master?" She said dramatically, "I am worried of myself!" She finished, then coughed some more.

Seraph eyed her from behind the maids where she stood, obviously trying hard and failing to hold in her laughter.

"If I were this sick, my king husband would have had the maids bring in my food on a buffet table to my room. They certainly would not be chattering as much as you’re, nor would they be standing so insolently as you’re."

The steward’s face tightened. "We do not kneel when serving guests. Since you insist on making things difficult, I shall have the maids drag you out."

Zina didn’t wait for her to finish her words before she pushed hard at the vanity dressing table until it fell on the floor and the mirrors shattered.

She picked a shard and held it to her neck. "Fine!" She exclaimed to the horror of the steward who stared at her like she was watching a mesmerising, albeit horrifying puppet show, "I shall now kill myself and rid me of this ridicule!"
