Chapter 353: The Madness In The Silence (I)
FIONNA’S POV
Fionna was convinced that she had escaped the ungrateful hell hole that was the Red Sisters. Hell, evidence to the effect was the fact that she was standing on a new ground with a stable position.
But currently, that ground was hot as hell, and she felt the burning all the way to her soul... which was funny because before that moment, she was truly convinced she had no soul.
But the last two hours had changed everything. It was in the unspoken anger, in the befuddling surprise at what had happened, and the the lack of understanding as to how to things had gone wrong.
There had been absolutely no warning. Of course they had been the letters, the kidnapping of Seraph—a maidservant whose name had become so popular every single person that inhabited in the castle now knew of her, but they had reacted accordingly to those signs and they had done their ultimate to protect what they must.
But the hardest enemy to fight had always been the enemy within, and everyone was paying for it.
Heavy snow had choosen that moment to begin to fall as if foreshadowing the torment and gloom that would follow after.
After all, it wasn’t just some maidservant that had turned up missing. It was the Luna Queen, wife to the Alpha King, chanted as the Great Seer of the Arctic North.
The woman, who until twenty four ago was the Theta of the NorthSteed Pack and all the Arctic North combined together.
And what was left in the wake of her absence was pure madeness. It was like the whole city had been shut down for the mere fact that the terror Daemon NorthSteed’a Arctic Wolf radiated swept through the lands.
Not a pin drop could be—even the match of Epsilons patrolling the city carried on a certain ominous hue that was far graver than silence itself.
The silence in the castle was just the same. And as Fionna walked into the Throne Room, which she had heard that the Alpha King had never bothered to use, the only thing she could hear was her steps.
At long last, she had been finally summoned in to answer for her crimes. The crime of dereliction of her duties.
Waiting for her we’re the living evidence of her predecessors that had walked into the room before her. There was no blood yet, but Alpha Kairos’ skin was white as sheet, Yaren NorthSteed as still as stone, the Sighter, or Kelkov as he was now known, as unmoving as a mountain.
And they all stood before the throne of the Arctic North which was an empty seat as far as Fionna could see.
Where was he by the way? The man that had summoned them?
Through the pack link, she could feel him. In fact, it was almost as if he was lurking in the shadows breathing over her neck. She could feel his aura everywhere, but she didn’t dare look around.
She just walked until she was standing before the throne, and then she bowed before the empty seat.
"I, Fionna, greet his majesty." She announced, then waited for about five seconds before she stood on her feet.
She wanted to ask what was happening, but she did not dare speak. She knew sooner or later, something would happen.
And it happened right then....
A loud bang. Like thunder in a rainstorm. It was by far the loudest noise in the castle ever since they made the shocking discovery of her absence.
And then a body was falling from the high ceilings, crashing into the ground and spilling blood as if though to announce its unsavoury presence.
Fiona merely took the unfortunate man in... and it was someone she had just recently acquainted herself with.
The Captain of the city guard.
A low growl sounded behind her, and slowly she turned only to behold the sight of a white wolf prowling for her.
But this was no wolf, not with that beast like height. It was certainly the biggest shifter she had ever set her eyes on. And by far, the most graceful.
Each step it took like that of a panther, the glow in its eyes like that of a snake waiting to strike. His fangs were bared, venom dripping between them.
The Arctic Wolf of the North—the most supreme of its kind.
Fiona knew instantly that it was the wolf’s jaw that had single handedly brought this man to his death. The creature had probably tossed him so high up to the ceiling like it was some play ball.
There was a certain rumour that circulated around the castle. Rumours of how the Alpha King detested shifting. Fionna understood why—for a man who lived a good chunk of his life chasing elegance in its finest form only to be thrusted in a war where he had to live no more than a beast for six years, always in his wolf form.
It would be expected that in chase for a change of scenery, he would abandon some unsavoury ways. After all the role of the Alpha King in the North was far more elegant and refined than the role of ordinary Alphas who only had to herd one pack.
But Fionna wasn’t too sure about the rumors. Not when the wolf that prowled towards her exerted such domineering menace that she felt her leg begun to tremble without her permission.
That kind of power....
’Kneel’
The command came like a growl in her head, and she found her obeying the command even before her brain fully processed it.
She fell on her knees, a gasp escaping her. Before she entered the room, the only fear she had entertained was whether or not Zina would make it back in one piece should they find her.
Fiona never feared for her life. But now, the domineering aura that poured off from the White Wolf seemed to be intentionally pushing her into the depths of fear itself.
But it was not just her, she heard everyone’s knee slam to the ground as well. Including Alpha Kairos.
