Chapter 352: Portalled To A New Life (II)
ZINA
Apparently, pro talking magic wasn’t was easy as just going from point A to Point B so Zina didn’t land smack dab in the West as she had expected.
Instead, they landed in a small border village by the North Western Borders.
Melwyn was looking exhausted, panting hard. Zina understood that just the use of an extensive magic such as portalling could reduce one’s life span. And that was also in view of the fast that practitioners of the art were extremely rare.
In Melwyn’s case, she had used the power two times in forty eight hours. First to get the Red Wolf safely through the North Western borders. Even then, Zina calculated that the magic she must have performed was not as extensive as what she performed to get Zina out of the castle.
This one was far draining, causing Melwyn’s skin to turn yellowish even, the under of her eyes black like she had rubbed charcoal there.
Even in her state, Zina was no stronger than her. She still managed to bound Zina, while they stayed in an abandoned house waiting for her to recuperate so they could resume their journey to her so-called new life.
It was already nightfall, but that didn’t make Melwyn any less antsy. Despite her low level of strength, she was on guard, anxious that they would be caught. They were still in Daemon’s territory afterall, and Zina could imagine that Daemon had already discovered she was missing.
She sincerely wished he wasn’t going ball shit crazy looking for her. She didn’t think she was deserving of such goodwill at that point.
"When you were marrying him, were you just being foolish? Or were you experimenting on something you know fully well would never have lasted?" Melwyn asked in the damp, abandoned hut they were resting in.
Zina meeely turned her eyes to the woman, appraising her with no emotion. "I just wanted to know what it felt like to rise to the highest position of a woman."
Melwyn cackled, not quite knowing whether Zina was being serious or cracking a dead joke. "Well, how does it taste?" She asked.
Zina scoffed lightly under her breath. Her voice was still small and she could not project it to more than a certain degree.
"It felt so good." Being married to Daemon adorned her with a cloak of confidence. That she had defeated a curse that had been placed on her at birth.
Melwyn’s expression darkened. "You truly believed you could escape it? The curse of the abandoned one? Your real mother abandoned you. Your foster mother abandoned you as well. Your foster family did the same. Eldric, whom you served under for years did the same. Even your so called mate and husband also once abandoned you."
Two months ago, those words would have been truly triggering. But now, she only stared at the woman with face devoid of any emotions while she slowly asked her. "Are you dumb?"
"What?" Melwyn scoffed, eyes wide with disbelief. She looked like something horrifying with the dark circles and the sweat peppering her yellowing skin.
"I hardly care about everyone you mentioned, but whenever did my husband abandon me?"
Melwyn scoffed. "Have you forgotten how he manipulated Zoric Sofyr into kidnapping you? And how you eventually died?"
Zina grinned. "But I’m staying right here before you ain’t I?"
Melwyn frowned. "Yes, and that is thanks to us."
"I am sure they must have tasked you to mentally torment me." Zina cut at her immediately, "To make me feel forlorn allover again. To make sure that I never dream of a world filled with hope or an escape from the hell I’m about to enter."
Melwyn tilted her head to the side, appraising. "You’re not as foolish as I deemed you."
"But you’re exactly as foolish as I’ve deemed you to be. Even more so." Zina said as harshly as she could afford with the new found volume of her voice.
"Throwing insults at me will not rile me up, Zina."
"And whoever said I wanted to rule you up Melwyn Fergus." Zina said, and the light in the woman’s eyes told her she had predicted right.
When Melwyn wouldn’t say anything, Zina smiled slowly. "Now that I look at your fatigue stricken face, I do agree that there’s some resemblance to the way you look right now, and the way Freya looked when the life slipped away from her eyes. The poor thing."
In a flash, Melwyn was right before her, snarling with fingers tightening around her throat. "How dare you?!"
"How dare me?" Zina repeated innocently, "why, I didn’t do anything. In fact, it’s exactly the staff that you’re looking for that killed her. In one clean slice at that." Zina whispered the last part with a giggle.
Ruling Melwyn up was probably not the wisest thing to do. But that was the only way she could get glimpses of information on what she was getting herself in.
"What do you mean?!" Melwyn billowed, seeming to be truly shocked at the news. Zina wasn’t surprised at that fact, Daemon had after all gone to great heights to hide news of Freya’s death.
"You did not know?" Zina gasped in pretense, "did your Master not tell you that the weapon he created was capable enough to take your sister’s life? Did he not tell you that the weapon has no eyes and would kill as it deemed fit?"
Melwyn screamed, howled, and kicked at the dust on the dirty floor. It was like she was out of her mind with—grief? Anger?— Zina didn’t know which. But after about two minutes of her just screaming, the sound completely died out.
The woman was panting hard, shoulders heaving from having exerted herself again.
The slowly, she turned to Zina, resting her wild eyes on Zina.
"Don’t try to get into my head again, Zina. We will now resume our journey," she said coolly, way too coolly that Zina was worried for her mental state.
How could she conjure another portal in her current state. But Melwyn did just that. Apparently, anger was a way to spur tired magic. And once again, they barrelled into another part of their journey to her new life.
And this time around, Zina was sure they landed at the wesr.
