Chapter 354: The Madness In The Silence (II)
FIONNA
Despite the fear that pumped through her veins and forced her wolf into submission, Fionna managed to hold her head up a little high while the wolf stopped just before her, golden eyes glued to hers.
Kneel.
What now? Did he mean to punish her?
Truth be told, she deserved to be punished. For failing to discern between friend and foe. For allowing Zina to fall into the hands of a treacherous woman.
By participating in the tournament, Fionna naturally subscribed herself to be a part of the NorthSteed Pack in all measures. But personally, she pledged her loyalty to Zina. Her once long time foe, who surprisingly had become something as cliche as a friend to her.
Some people are born to loose. While some are reborn to win.
Fionnaneverforgotthose those words, not even for a moment. The fact that the eight year old girl whom her seven year old self bullied somehow saw the light in the new journey she was undertaking... the journey to free herself from the Red Sisters, was something she could never forget.
So yes, she should be punished for her dereliction. But not before she lends a hand in punishing the very people that had tormented Zina’s life from the moment she was a baby.
Which was why Fionna worked hard to hold her head tall even in the face of the wolf that towered over her. But why was it that inspite of her resolution, her hands began to shake and cold sweat break over her skin.
Without knowing it, her head fell to the ground, her shoulders unable to hold her firm anymore. She was breathing hard, as though she was loosing control of her limbs. But the silence around her, and the silence in the stand of the wolf before her never ceased.
Knowing how powerful Daemon NorthSteed was with two supreme wolf’s was one thing, but experiencing the power he wielded when he shifted into one of his form was an entirely different experience altogether.
An experience she was desperate to forget already.
She had trained her whole life mostly to defeat the limitations of her wolf. She never wanted to be confined by shifting levels and what not, which was why she trained to become a deadly assassin.
Whether in human or wolf form, Fionna had never been limited in strength. And things like silver and wolfsbane hardly scared her because she was confident in her abilities as a person and not as a wolf.
But all that confidence was crumbling like a house of rocks right then and there. Forget about her wolf, she could hardly lift a finger. She knew the pack link only made the Arctic’s Wolf dominance over her more profound, but it was still a wonderful might should she say so herself.
It felt like the wolf wanted to devour her, or perhaps toss her the same way he tossed the captain of the city guard.
But he growled lowly, and then prowled past her. Fionna heard the sounds of joints cracking and distending out of place to take a new shape, and she figured she must be shifting back to human form.
That was when the spell on her, if it could be called that, was finally released.
She gasped, swallowing mouthful of air to ease the pressure on her lungs. She staggered to her feet and turned in time to behold him shrugging on a dark red silky cloak with a grace expression.
"Surely you do not think my wolf would eat you, Delta?" He spoke in a dry, velvet voice.
Fionna swallowed, remaining silent because it felt like the wisest thing to do.
Did he not remember his wolf commanding her to kneel?
Such an act by a supreme wolf was not only a domineering one but one that suggested a deep killing intent. And she was sure she was not the only one who heard the command if even Alpha Kairos was brought to his knees.
On cue, it was the Alpha that spoke, "I am to be blamed for this. Never did I expect Melwyn to be a traitor." He gritted in a voice doused with the kind of anger you only found in a person whose world is about to implode.
"It’s not entirely your fault," Daemon said in the same dry voice. "After all you only got to know Melwyn through me."
Kairos didn’t seem convinced. If anything, the man trembled from rage. Daemon on the other hand remained ever unreadable, his expression carefully guarded in a manner that was completely contradictory to the murderous rage he exhibited in his wolf form.
Fionna would truly hate to see what him loosing control would like. She could imagine it woukd be a sight for far sore eyes.
On cue, Marcus entered the throne room, his steps the only sound that made up for the stifling silence that had now engulfed them once again.
He bowed, "Alpha, the Night Mages have reconfirmed that Melvyn has portalled into the Western Lands."
That was the news that had initially caused all hell to break loose. The news that had brought forth the maddening silence that now descended everywhere.
When they had found out Melwyn’s schemes and managed to track down that she had merely portalled to a boundary village, they had been hope of finding Zina.
It was within the territory of the Arctic North after all.
But after deploying one hundred of the best Epsilons under Daemon’s personal command and about the best resources, the far grimmer news had followed. And Marcus was sent to reconfirm same.
The door opened again, and this time, it was Caspian that entered.
"The King’s head maid has turned the Queen’s room upside down. We haven’t found the staff." He announced without wasting time.
Fiona found it strange that Daemon was looking for some staff when his wife was missing. But there had been talks of words that had been scribbled in blood and left in Zina’s room.
She imagined this staff was connected to it.
"And Elder Sybil?" Daemon asked without pause, "where is she?"
Caspian bowed, "she’s just outside. However, she insisted on coming along with some woman."
"What woman?" Daemon scoffed. Fionna wondered if Caspian wasn’t aware that the man’s patience was running low.
Perhaps he wasn’t that oblivious for he immediately answered, "She has no permanent name apparently. But the woman said her name for today is Winter, and she claims she is the Luna Queen’s tutor."
