Chapter 345: You’re Leaving?

ZINA

Zina and Daemon laid side by side, staring at each other minutes after their love making in the cacophony of blissful silence and serenity that enveloped them.

It was the perfect kind of peace, and none of them was ready to break the bubble and face the stormy world around. That was of course until Daemon squinted, frowning hard as though he was suddenly coming upon bad news.

Zina sat up right, figuring he was communicating with someone through the pack link. But a second later, he was bolting up from the bed, shrugging into leather pants and clasping his bronze belt close.

"What has happened?" Zina asked, wrapping herself around their duvet while she approached him tentatively.

"Seraph was spotted with the Red Wolf," Daemon said grimly while Zina’s heart stuttered.

Was spotted. It was in the past tense.

"What about now?" She asked, bracing herself for the worst news.

"I am sorry Zina. They managed to escape through a witch portal created by a powerful White Monk." Daemon said, pinching the area between his eyes.

At least she was not dead yet.

"The White Monks? What is the progress of the war your brothers are fighting?" Zina said, recollecting well that Eldric alongside Daemon’s three elder brothers were currently thrusted in the middle of a war at the North-Western borders.

"It’s pretty bad but they’re holding up. I never expected them to win though. Them fighting the war is my way of making their execution worthwhile and also declaring to the West that I won’t tolerate stunts such as the one they’re pulling on my land." Daemon finished darkly, a murderous intent spread across his features.

Zina nodded grimly. "If the Red Wolf has a powerful monk working for him, then he must have escaped through the North Western borders then."

Daemon slammed his fists against the wall behind her, slightly startling Zina who had never seen him that mad. "If only I left someone capable at the borders, it might never happened. Instead, those stupid brothers of mine let him leave just like that."

Zina knew his anger was way more than that, so she asked the main question that begged to be asked. "So how many casualties are we talking about?"

His dark eyes rested on her, but he didn’t hold the details back from her. At least in that regard, he trusted her to be strong enough to recieve the news.

"A little above five hundred."

So the Red Wolf was that powerful. That was to be expected, even in her vision, Zina always felt a terrifying energy coming from him.

Slowly, she rested her hand on his biceps, staring him deep in the eyes. "I will make sure their families are seen to."

"Thank you." He said earnestly, leaning down to peck her on the forehead.

"There’s a bit of good news though," he muttered, "Zelkov has managed to put a track on him."

Zina squinted at first in confusion, then finally the name sank in.

"The Sighter?"

"He worked with the largest Hunters Guild back in the west. It is his expertise."

"That is good news. But is he currently following the Red Wolf? No matter how skilled your gamma is, the Red Wolf might be warned of his presence."

"No he is not following him. I’ve already asked him to fall back, he is on his way back to the castle."

The news thrilled Zina for more than one reason. She had always yearned to speak with the man since he was her only known connection back to her real home and her mysterious origins. Although said mysterious had become even less mysterious with time.

"What about you?" Zina squinted at his now fully clad self in confusion, "where are you going to? Back to your meeting?"

Daemon hesitated for a moment. "Someone has to track him down Zina."

Zina stared at him. "What? No, no. You can’t be leaving."

He sighed. "We are dealing with a Supreme Wolf. It has to be me."

Zina reared back, "You can’t be serious." She protested, "besides he claims he wants me, so why has he left with Seraph? I believe it’s a trap. Staying here with me is the best decision."

Daemon stared at her strangely for a while like he didn’t know how best to say what he was about to say next. In a low voice he then spoke, "he has really left, Zina."

"Why...?" She began to question because for the life of her she didn’t understand.

Even when Daemon had sent his men out to secure every boundary and exit from the Arctic North, Zina had believed it to be useless for she was confident the Red Wolf won’t leave until he had her.

"Because he estimated well how much you would do to save your maidservant." Daemon spat out, the words almost an harsh accusation.

Zina stood there weirdly, fingers clutching the duvet around her naked body.

"Even since Seraph was kidnapped, you’ve been acting strangely. But you can deceive every other person but not me, Zina. I saw it in your eyes that you were ready to fall off a tall rise building if it meant saving her."

Zina looked away from the scrutiny of his stare. Why was he tearing at her shield one by one and flinging them off.

"You attempt underplay how much that maidservant of yours means to you so that I will loose my guard with you. Maybe one day I would wake only to find that you’ve gone to seek the Red Wolf out to exchange yourself for her. Even now, you keep something away from me...."

Zina rested back her eyes at him, shaken up by the way he had predicted everything so right.

Had it been so obvious that she was keeping a secret from him? "I don’t mean...."

"It’s fine though," Daemon cut her off gently, his fingers coming up to caress her face lightly almost like feathers ghosting against her skin. "I know you’ve your reasons. And so do I, Zina. The same you want to protect her, I too wish to protect you."

Tears pooled in her eyes, "But I wish to protect you too!"

"You shouldn’t have to worry about me." He said, "leave all the worrying to me. This is something I must end by myself. You’re my mate, so a blight to you is a smear to me as well."

"But you’re my mate too," she could only say her voice cracking at the sudden seriousness of their conversation.

Just minutes ago, they were making love and whispering sweet nothings to each other. And now it felt as though they were preparing for a heart wrenching goodbye.

Daemon seemed resolved in his decision, and a crying Luna Queen wasn’t what he needed right then. Zina squared her shoulders, sniffing back her tears.

If they were going to do this and come out unscathed from it, then the best she could do was make sure that Daemon shared everything with her.

That way, her mind will be at ease as well.

"Can I ask questions then? And may I participate in any meetings going forward?" She asked although the stealth in her eyes made it clear that she was going to do those two things regardless of his stance.

A small smile snaked its way to his lips. "Very well then, your majesty."
