The Alpha's Blind Fate -
Chapter 275: Raven The Traitor
Chapter 275: Raven The Traitor
ZINA
Zina’s eyes widened in shock as the woman’s words hung in the air like a dreaded curse. A cold, calculated glint appeared in the woman’s eyes, and Zina knew it then that she had been wrong. This wasn’t about Daemon... not entirely. No, this was about her.
Shadow growled by her side, his body tensing as he prepared to attack. To Zina’s surprise, the man grinned like a mad man as he raised his fists in the air.
"So I see you’ve gotten yourself a new Master, Raven," he snarled, almost like a different person. "But then, what would I expect from a dog who bites the hand that feeds her."
Raven?
The woman smiled, her scar twisting into a grotesque grin. But something changed in her eyes as she spoke in a slow, drawn out drawl.
"Shadow, you’ve been serving Daemon NorthSteed all these years, I suppose your loyalty is nothing compared to that of a dog like me who bites her master without reason." she said, and with a swift motion, she notched an arrow in her bow and fired.
Zina didn’t have time to react. The woman, her fingers, the arrow, the bow, they were all a blur of chaotic mess as if she controlled time itself. She was so lightning fast that it was only Shadow who actually had the time to react as if he had been waiting for this kind of swiftness all his life.
He put himself in front of Zina, his raised hand easily catching the arrow that whistled to an opera sound only used when telling a horror story. The silver head of the arrow nonetheless penetrated the flesh of Shadow’s palm, causing the air about them to smell like a burning carcass.
Zina watched as blood trickled down his arm while his flesh burnt.
"Theta," he growled in a low voice, "I must ask you to step back."
Zina’s only response was bending down to grab the stick that she had long been eyeing ever since she rolled out of her carriage. She didn’t need a soothsayer to know that they were in a precarious situation. Just something about the barely perceptible tension that held Shadow’s body captive told her that none of them anticipated a situation like this.
The issue wasn’t so much about whether they could defeat the woman—Raven—or not. But it was of how much sacrifices had to be made to see it through to the end.
"Before you ask me to step back again," Zina whispered harshly while she gripped the stick tightly, "I must ask you if there’s anything I should know."
Raven notched another arrow lazily while they spoke. Shadow’s body was still blocking hers, but the other woman was hardly deterred by that face.
"This is his majesty’s business." Shadow answered not taking his eyes off the woman for once. "The only thing you need to know is that you must get to safety."
Zina shot the man a scathing glare. Their side and Raven’s side were still encircling each other as if they were waiting for the ultimate command for them to resume their fight and break away from the standstill.
"You heard what the woman just said to me," Zina whispered back even harshly, "and since I am sure your ears were open just now, then I am sure you’ve figured that this is very much my business."
"Theta, in thirty minutes, the King’s Epsilons will be here. A signal has already been sent out, I only need you to take care until help arrives." Shadow answered, raising his fist and widening his stance.
"Commander," Zina said to the Lycan Shifter still maintaining her whisper, "what is your name?"
The commander who was flanking her left side still maintained his fighting stance and didn’t turn to acknowledge her. But he answered nonetheless.
"Commander Brad. I serve under His Majesty’s special squadron led by Supreme Commander Shadow."
"So you’re Commander Shadow’s subordinate is it not?"
The two men glanced at her briefly like they were wondering why on earth she was making small talk while they were facing a huge number of enemies. Raven maintained her nocked bow while grinning as if she was content to draw out the hunt if it could be called that.
"Yes I am, Theta." Commander Brad finally answered.
Zina gripped her stick harder while she glared at Raven for a different reason. She was beginning to understand that nothing spiked her blood pressure than watching random people attempt to destroy the peaceful world Daemon was building.
"Listen to me you two commanders," Zina gritted in a harsh whisper that certainly held the attention of the two men, "especially you, Commander Brad. Commander Shadow has achieved meritorious service over and over again, so if anything were to go wrong, his majesty would not blame him. But you on the other hand, I am unsure if you can keep your head."
The two men turned their full attention to her; Shadow’s eyes held slight confusion, while Commander Brad’s held a candle of devotion that burned ever fiercely.
"Theta, if it is your life that you worry about, then rest assured that I will protect you today even if it costs me my life." Commander Brad said solemnly in a harsh growl that was reminiscent of the fact that it was both he and his wolf that spoke at the same time.
Zina chuckled. "You’ve got me wrong, Commander. All that I am trying to say is that no matter what happens today, you must make sure that you secure evidence that the IceSavage Pack conspired with whomever this woman is."
Raven released the arrow at the same time. Shadow raised his hand to block it, but he missed it narrowly, causing the arrow to pierce through his skin. Zina stood still and watched as the arrow didn’t exit the wound luckily for her skull that would have surely been the next entry point.
The attack happened to be the signal everyone had been waiting for, and the barren border descended into chaos anew.
The air became a cacophony of snarls, growls, and clashing steel, the sounds echoing off the surrounding trees. The scent of blood and sweat hung heavy, a noxious cloud that clung to Zina’s skin. Zina remembered all that Sybril taught her and danced with her stick, smacking away short range attackers while Ablanch finished them off for her.
Shadow’s broad back formed a protective barrier before her, his muscles rippling beneath his shirt as he flung an attacker across the clearing. The man’s body crashed against a nearby tree, the impact sending leaves and branches tumbling to the ground. Yet again, his strength took Zina by surprise.
Ablanch darted past Zina, his movements a blur of deadly precision. He took down two attackers with swift efficiency, their bodies crumpling to the ground as he spun to face the next threat. Nearby, another werewolf was locked in a fierce battle with another opponent, their bodies crashing against the now empty carriage as they exchanged blows.
Arrows whistled through the air, their deadly trajectories slicing through the chaos. Zina ducked instinctively as one sailed past her ear, the wind from its passage sending her silver white hair whipping back. Shadow yanked her out of danger’s way, his eyes blazing as one after the other, Zina’s company of elite guards fell as they gave away their last breath.
The carriage creaked and groaned, its wooden frame splintering as an arrow nailed it, piercing through one wall and emerging from the other. Zina winced at the sound, her heart racing with adrenaline as she gripped her stick tighter.
One thing had become obvious to all of them at the same time, and that was the speed to which their enemies took them down. Raven had not made any more move, her eyes glinting with amusement as she watched the show.
Zina feared that if things continued to move the way they were, in less than five minutes, they would be swept off before the backup would reach them.
Ablanch spat out blood, staggering. "Just what are they on?" He growled his question.
For every one of them they cut down somehow managed to make it up as if their bodies were made of steel. Their numbers remained the same, while Zina’s dwindled.
So what were they on?
Raven notched her arrow anew, eyes glinting fiercely while she grinned "All I want is for the Theta to die and I shall leave. Only then can I report back my findings to my new master."
