Chapter 260: The Team Is Here

Chapter 260: The Team Is Here

DAEMON

Daemon laid Zina on his bed back at his chambers while he parted back the strands of hair that were stuck on her forehead.

Malik Zorch stood stoically by the side while Daemon cradled Zina not wanting to let go of her yet.

He didn’t know if she knew it yet, but there was something about her eyes that was madly possessing and compelling at the same time. It was he that was the Alpha Wolf, and yet that night, he found himself under her spell ready and willing to do her bidding.

She said they were an army of them. Even without a report to the effect, or any physical evidence to support her words, Daemon believed her hook, line and sinker. How could he not when the intensity of the truth burned both in her eyes and in the way her heart beat steadily... in her words and in her silent plea that called for his trust.

He was saddened though; the fact that she had to see such cruelty before they even happened just because of her gifts. If there was anything he could do to remove such burden, he would have done without a thought as to the cost.

"My Lord, why didn’t you tell her that you’ve already claimed the Arctic Wolf and that Eldric has been long shipped to the Iron Coast of the West?" Malik muttered gruffly.

"I see you’ve been eavesdropping." Daemon merely said while pulling the duvet up to Zina’s neck

"It’s important for me to do so so I will know what to say to her and what to not. I had the impression she held an indelible trust with you, little did I know she had no knowledge of the Arctic Wolf."

Daemon had indeed claimed the Arctic Wolf, although not that long ago. Contrary to how Malik seemed to be putting it, it had never been his intention to keep that fact away from Zina. If he had known that she had been quite concerned about it, he would have long told her about it.

The public announcement that the Arctic Wolf would be offered to the next Beta was merely a ploy devised by him, Yaren and Marcus to weed out some certain High Profile spies from the different regions in Vraga who would have sent their subordinates to participate in the tournament instead of participating in it themselves.

As expected, once the announcement had been made, a lot of registered identities participating in the tournament changed faces. It was for that reason that Marcus toured the grounds of the tournament under the guise of a supervisor while secretly monitoring those people.

In response to Malik’s unusual rambling, Daemon observed. "I wasn’t aware that your relationship with her has gotten to the point where you’ve something to say to her."

Malik bowed her head. "Forgive me my lord, but the Theta is quite a handful if I must say so myself. It’s difficult to handle her and her surprising sharpness."

Daemon chuckled darkly. "You find her sharpness surprising?" Daemon said while standing from the bed, "have you forgotten she is the one chanted as the Great Seer."

"It’s an oversight on my part, forgive me." Malik muttered, maintaining her bow.

"You may rise, however I must ask that you don’t let her surprising sharpness cause an oversight on your part. Remember at all times that your role by her side is more than that of a protector. Your life is dependent on how well she lives and breathes."

"Of course my lord. I will never forget that." She answered grimly.

"Now tell me all that happened tonight. Be brief about it though, I’m afraid I’ve kept Alpha Kairos waiting for a long time."

Malik’s lips narrowed sternly. "Before he became Alpha Kairos, he was once a commander in your army without an alpha. It is his duty to wait."

Daemon chuckled amusedly while they walked to his office. "If you say so, Zorch. I’m still waiting for an account from you."

"There was an oversight on my part tonight when we visited the inn. I didn’t realize the case of the dead Red Sister could have anything to do with the man we still hunt for. Luckily for us, the Theta stepped up and put an end to the speculations about the Red Sisters’ death."

"So she caught on to that fact faster than you who have been on this case for a long time?" Daemon asked in an icy tone. Not only did he hate oversights, but he hated incapability that took any form whatsoever.

"I shall accept any punishment my lord. But the involvement of the Red Hand Fionna did blind me for a moment."

"Investigate her." Daemon said without missing a breath while they took a sharp turn to his office.

"We are already on that. But there’s something else...."

"What is it?" Daemon asked impassively as they approached the corridor that connected directly to his office. He could already hear the distant voice of Alpha Kairos who was probably speaking to the sorcerer that trailed after him wherever he went.

"Besides the Red Hand, there was another man tonight. He kept on persistently vouching for the Red Hand...."

"Get to it already, Zorch." Daemon snapped impatiently, knowing very well that Malik intended to say more than the fact that a man was apparently siding with Fionna.

"The man is not only a part of the tournament, but he is also among the list of suspects you drafted for Beta Marcus."

"He must be the one they call the Sighter," Daemon mused distractedly, plastering a neutral expression as he approached Kairos. The blue eyed man on the other hand plastered a huge smile that Daemon knew was venomous and lethal underneath it.

"His Majesty!" Kairos exclaimed, "I’ve heard that seeing you these days is like asking for a meeting from the gods."

When Zina had fainted, Daemon had the foresight to use a secret passage in his office. If he had used the main passageway to carry out Zina, he didn’t believe he would have heard the end of it from Kairos.

"Alpha Kairos," Daemon said blandly while shaking the other man’s hand. "Thank you for honoring my invitation."

Kairos knew well not to expect any apology of some sort from him though. That would not only be overreaching but asking for far too much.

Kairos smiled even broader, eyes glinting with mischief. "The honor is all mine." The man drawled with a dramatic half bow.

Even at the time when the man was once a commander in Daemon’s army, he never showed subservience to him. Daemon sure as hell wasn’t expecting such subservience now that he was an Alpha—not even if Daemon contributed to his title immensely.

Daemon’s eyes roamed to the woman who stood by Kairos’ side. A devious glint took over his expression at the realization that the team was complete. It didn’t matter who the man he was searching for was, not when both Kairos and the woman were both there.

"My Lord," the woman bowed, murky white eyes filled with mystery. "It is a pleasure to see you after so many years."

Daemon smirked. "The pleasure is all mine, Sorcerer."
