Chapter 259: An Army Of Them

ZINA

Zina should be thrilled that Daemon had found a solution to this problem of theirs, but she couldn’t help the feeling that all was not as it seems. Whenever she remembered the ransom letter that Daemon showed her earlier, coupled with the events that night, her heart almost... hurt?

It didn’t make sense, but that was how she kept feeling. Like she was doing something so wrong... like she was losing sight of some big picture.

Regardless, she forced a smile although it wasn’t necessarily a reluctant smile on her part. She was actually majorly happy that Daemin had managed to find someone so capable that would handle their situation. But apart from the issue of the mystery man, she had one topic she had to broach with Daemon.

It was a topic that she dreaded, and one that the visions she saw in Kairos’ blue eyes drove the point that she must address the matter.

"I need to talk to you about something."

Daemon casually flipped the pages of the book in his hands although his eyes betrayed any concentration he would normally have held. "Your time is up. And in case you haven’t noticed, I am trying my best not to touch you or do things to you that will make even our small guests just outside my office blush."

There was a noticeable improvement on Zina’s part as he said those words. She had gone from the blushing, innocent woman to something more on the middle ground. She didn’t slap her mouth as she would have in horror of his lewd words. No, instead, she rolled her eyes muttering,

"Trying your best? Your urge must be so minute if you can still hold back even now."

"What was that?" His eyes gleamed with the signs of a dare.

"Nothing," Zina said, shaking her head. This was not the time to be distracted, especially now that her brain was recollecting certain decadent memories of her body plastered to a wall while Daemon took her in all the ways she never knew of.

Thinking about thinking was alone to light up her body, and her nipples slightly puckered underneath the corset of her heavy dress.

"I do not believe what I’ve to speak with you on has anything to do with your wanton thoughts," she said, clearing her throat uncomfortably.

Mischievous eyes trapped her in the ’Daemon’s Spell’ with perfectly arched raised eyebrows. "Wanton?" He drawled like he was a stranger to that word until that very moment.

"Surely you can spare me a minute." Zina said with a voice tinged with exasperation.

"Fine. Go on."

"It’s about the Arctic Wolf." Zina said, hitting the nail on the head. Daemon on his part barely acted surprised, flipping the pages of the book like it held all his attention whereas Zina was quite confident that was hardly the case.

"What about it? Last I checked, Eldric hasn’t yet cried wolf."

Zina sighed. She was yet to learn how to defeat Daemon in a play of words especially when it came to his nonchalant sarcasms. "I want to advise you against giving it out as a prize in this tournament. I understand that you intend to let Yaren have it as some sort of promise or compensation for his loyalty to you over the years, but the Arctic Wolf represents the ruler of the Arctic North Daemon, and the only man who deserves to possess it is the Alpha King of the North."

Stormy eyes left the book and rested on her. "Since you know well of my true intent, then it’s useless to advise me. I am afraid you’ve wasted your time, and mine."

"Daemon...." Zina started strongly because this was a matter she simply couldn’t back down on. Not when she had seen the terrifying vision in Kairos’ blue eyes and not when she remembered the words Theta Amelia left her.

Daemon was greatness itself, and that greatness meant he had to possess more than Supreme Wolf. That was the way Zina saw it, and that was the only way Zina could fathom that Daemon would escape the doom in her war torn vision.

"... what if Yaren doesn’t become Beta. Surely you must have foreseen such a possibility. Even if he does become your beta, I do not believe he should have such a power for he is your subordinate."

The book was slammed close harshly and Zina would have been startled by the noise if not for the fact that she had already prepared herself for something far worse.

In the eyes of a stranger, it would seem as though she was harshly stepping on the trust that Yaren shared with Daemon. But she hoped that Daemon would see her despair for all it was.

Dredging up the last of her courage, she marched toward him until there was not a single step that divided them. He took one of his hands and put it over her heart that was beating madly. And then with her light blue eyes, she trapped his dark, stormy ones black like the moonless night and with a shine that could only be emitted by the stars.

"I know it," she spoke intensely, "your fears, and your desires. I wish to become part of all of them, Daemon. Part of you as much as I can, and as much as you would allow. So believe when I say that speaking of these things hurts me as much as it hurts the trust you’ve for me."

"Then tell me why speak of them in the first place?" He asked, not taking his eyes off her, nor his hand off her chest.

"Because I now understand the reason why you once kept me at hands length. Understanding the fact that you expected death because of a revenge that you must take. But I must let you know now that this is more than revenge, Daemon. That which you wish to fight against for your late mother will turn into a fierce reason which you must protect your people."

As if in a trance, his free hand wound up against her waist, tugging her closer until they were plastered against each other. At some point, the book he once held had clattered to the floor, and throughout it all, they never broke eye contact while they drowned in each other.

"And why is that?" He breathed against the skin of her face, "what do you see?"

Zina felt drowsy suddenly as the answer stood rooted at the tips of her tongue. It was as if she couldn’t move at all, nor any part of her body. But she managed to whisper the words nonetheless.

"They are coming Daemon, and it’s not just one of them. It’s an army of them."

Her legs turned mushy under her, unable to hold her up anymore. But she didn’t fall for Daemon kept holding onto her like she was his lifeline.

Unconsciously, she realized that there was something she omitted to say....

...the fact that she could be responsible, knowingly or unknowingly, for the army of whatever that was coming for Daemon.

Because no matter how much she denied the cloaked figure in her visions, the staff the woman held might be all the convictions she needed.
