Chapter 261: Raising A Secret Army

DAEMON

Kairos and the female sorcerer, Melwyn, entered Daemon’s office. While Kairos sat without any invitation, Melwyn took in Daemon’s office with her white murky eyes while she stood by Kairos’ side.

The duo had always been like that for as far as Daemon could Remember them from his Army Without An Alpha. Which is why he knew that despite Kairos’ easy posture, the man’s mind was processing every crumb of information that he had stumbled upon that night in his castle whether by chance or accident.

Afterall, Daemon hadn’t told Kairos much before he extended an invitation to him. On his own part, that was him being cautious. And the only reason Kairos honored such an invitation in the first place was for the fact that they both shared a past that was simply hard to ignore no matter how it was looked at.

Daemon sat down, and before he could barely settle in, Kairos was already throwing the first question.

"I assumed something serious enough to warrant my attention must have happened for you to call me."

Daemon’s amused eyes flickered to the man. Kairos was gunning for the main reason why he was summoned, however Daemon was less than reluctant to immediately show the man that his house was on fire—although that was too dramatic a description. That was a sign of gross weakness, especially on his part as Alpha King.

"How are the men I left in your custody?" Daemon asked instead, steering their discussion on a ground that Kairos apparently didn’t like.

"Men?" Kairos repeated gruffly, blue eyes vibrant against the moonlight that streamed in Daemon’s office. "Five thousand Werewolves aren’t exactly men, Daemon. That is an army."

Daemon smirked. Just to humor him he repeated accordingly, "How are my ’army’ faring, Alpha Kairos?"

Before Daemon resigned from the Army Without An Alpha, most of his loyal commanders expressed that they had no interest in returning to their former, bleak lives which aligned with Daemon’s interests. So while the rest of the world believed that his Army had been disbanded, Shadow had made a detour to the mountains with over five thousand werewolves in tow to Alpha Kairos’ land.

It was a good thing that the thing about the Central Mountains was that they possessed a vast amount of dry, rocky lands that made for a good hiding place for that number of soldiers that Daemon was raising under Kairos. Secrecy was important because what he was doing was wrong in the eyes of the Five Regions.

Afterall, it was a well known fact that the majority of people that constituted the Army Without An Alpha were hardly from the Arctic North. No, they were the misfits rejected by the Alphas of the Four Regions in their fake attempt to pretend as though they supported the Arctic North’s cause to wipe away the Arising Rogues.

Knowledge of what he was doing would be seen as an attempt to upturn the order of the Five Regions. Which was so funny because that was just his aim; to upturn everything as long as it fit into his grand plans.

It was Kairos’ turn to look amused. "Of course they’re doing well. With them being so well fed and well trained courtesy of the large amount of money you deposited with us, however could they not be fine?"

"It’s good that you’re putting my hard earned money to use." Daemon said pedantically while nodding repeatedly like he was satisfied.

"Indeed," Kairos said, still playing along with Daemon’s attempt to stall the main reason why he was summoned, "although I must admit I was quite confounded when I heard you caused such a fuss with the missing Ten Million Grams of Gold. Especially when I know you’re rich enough to comfortably feed an army of five thousand for a decade."

Daemon schooled his expression into the blandest that he could muster. There were a lot of things he could joke about, but not the status of his personal wealth which in his opinion had no direct correlation to the wealth of the Arctic North.

"The wealth of the land is the wealth of the land, Kairos."

"True," Kairos drawled, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Pardon my justified curiosity."

Daemon knew that he had just given the man the perfect distraction to hold onto, for it was a well known fact that Kairos was particularly obsessed with the roots of his personal wealth.

How could the man not be when Daemon had all but delivered Three Million Grams of Silver like it was nothing at his doorsteps just for the sole purpose of feeding his secret army and keeping their existence away from the world.

But Daemon’s extravagance with that matter was well justified. He wasn’t just training an army, he was training Elites. Their trainers were the best of the very best, retired and sourced from all over Vraga. And with the revelation from Zina that night, Daemon had a sudden nagging feeling that he needed more Army... even if he had to go against the Four Regions to create one.

For now though, that was not the reason for the meeting at hand.

"I need the help of you and Melwyn to track down someone."

Kairos said nothing while Melwyn who had been silent all along rested her murky eyes on Daemon. Her eyes reminded Daemon of how Zina’s used to be, although they lacked the natural brilliance and bone chilling terror Zina’s eyes naturally held.

Which was funny because just like Zina, Melwyn also saw visions although by dabbling in sorcery. Back in the days, her duty had always been to provide solid leads while Kairos did the main hunting.

"Someone on your territory?" She asked simply in a soft, genuine voice.

"Probably." Daemon answered cryptically, "Although I do not believe he is from the Arctic North."

"That is unlike you," Melwyn drawled, "you prefer to do the hunting yourself so why have you called us?"

If Melwyn was waiting for Daemon to admit that the case had turned into more of a headache, then she would be sorely disappointed.

"My hands are full. Besides, don’t act like you haven’t been searching for an opportunity to lay your eyes anew on Marcus. See this whole affair as me granting you a getaway."

Melwyn beamed maliciously, "He is still so cold though... and don’t I like him just like that."

"What about me?" Kairos said darkly, "unlike Melwyn, I certainly am not enjoying this ’getaway’."

Melwyn rolled her eyes while muttering. ’I swear he is no fun.’

"Fine. What shall I offer you in return for your services, Kairos GateStone of the GateStone Pack?" Daemon said in an attempt to placate the man who was already sounding gruff from the look of things."

And just by taking in the way Kairos’ eyes darkened in anticipation, Daemon could well anticipate that the man had come well prepared for him.
