Chapter 253: Murder Or Death In Combat?
"... I find them all Theta, no matter how far they are."
The words held Zina spellbound for a moment, but then she shook her head and recovered herself. Must he introduce himself so flamboyantly? Although she would be the only one that would describe his introduction as flamboyant for any sane person would get chills from how he said the words.
So a Red Sister had died? How and why?
She looked between Fionna and the Sighter, but they gave away nothing. Fionna’s rigid posture on the one hand spoke of her annoyance over the allegation than any guilt whatsoever, the Sighter even looked more uninterested, his bland expression giving away nothing in particular. In some ways, the man reminded her of Daemon and the morbid control he possessed.
Finally, the commander spoke. "This area was cordoned off by Beta DireWf due to the previous incident that happened here. But this night at our office, we received an anonymous letter...." The man trailed unsure.
Meanwhile Zina’s hawklike eyes were on both Fionna and the Sighter. She didn’t know how to put it to words, but something was wrong with the air between both of them. Especially with the way the Sightet had defended Fionna like he knew something they all didn’t know of.
"What did this letter say?" Zina asked when the commander said nothing else. Even Malik Zorch who had been particularly obsessed over Zina’s safety now seemed immersed in the matter at hand. From her peripheral vision, Zina had caught the woman whispering something to one of the guards who appeared from the shadows. Then said guard took off.
"The letter stated that there’s a dead body at the same inn the man who lost his tongue was found. Even though I found no logical basis to follow such lead, I still had to act, thus, why I brought my men to this place."
"Where’s this letter in question?" She asked.
The man shifted uncomfortably. "Of course I had it delivered to Beta DireWolf. He must have gotten it by now."
Which meant that Daemon too was already notified of what was happening. And which further meant that as usual, he was going to stay awake the whole night while the ever growing pile of his responsibilities simply multiplied.
For good reasons, that made Zina angry.
"So where is this dead body?" She asked, and not because she didn’t believe a word of what they were saying. But because as far as eyes could see, she was yet to spot a corpse.
At the same time, the entrance of the inn opened and four men, bearing a paladin with a white cloth covering it appeared, their expressions grim.
Without thinking twice about it, Zina swept past through the Commander, Malik hot on her heels. But before the other woman could object to what she was about to do, Zina had already pulled off the white cloth that revealed the lifeless body of a young woman, her skin deathly pale, with a look of frozen shock etched on her face. Her eyes now stared blankly into the distance, unseeing and unresponsive. A faint scent of perfume still lingered on her clothes, a poignant reminder of the life that had been brutally cut short.
Zina’s gaze swept over the body, taking in the torn and bloodied leather clothing at her chest area, and the pool of dried blood at the same area that told the tale of what happened to her.
Zina of course could not find it in her to muster any kind of pity for the woman. Not when her stiff fingers clutched onto a sword that spoke of one fact—the dead woman before her hadn’t been assassinated, she had been killed in combat.
That much was clear as daylight, so Zina thought about many things at the same time. Like why the five Red Sisters happened to be aware of something that the guards knew of just that night, and what the now dead Red Sister was doing at the inn in the first place. A coroner that followed right after the paladin adjusted his glasses, looking grim. Zina recognised him as the same paladin that dealt with Freya Fergus dead body—just another murder case that was enshrouded in mystery.
"I was going to report to his majesty my findings. But since you’re here Theta, I would like to ask if you want to hear my findings.
"Don’t you think you’re according a mere Theta the kind of respect that a Luna Queen is deserving of," the nasal voice of Brestom IceSavage drawled, causing heads to whip at him.
Zina, who had done her best to ignore the pathetic existence of the man levelled him with a freezing glare. The kind she only used on the lowest of the most damned people.
The idiot chuckled, clearly mistaking Zina’s glare as her being annoyed by his words. Except she was annoyed alright, but more at his pathetic existence than his obvious jab.
"Of course, seeing as you’re the Alpha King’s mate, it’s rightfully assumed that you will be his Luna queen... even if even now you still bear a foreign surname and you’re hardly a member of the Pack whom you serve."
Zina turned back her eyes on the coroner, ignoring the laid back insults that had been thrown on her. Since the commander and his guards were tolerating Brestom’s presence, it was wise to assume that he had a legitimate standing to be there. Which made sense as she was standing on the Western Territory of the capital which was supervised by the IceSavage Pack.
"Do reveal your findings to me," Zina spoke in a voice loud enough that everyone around could hear, especially the five Red Sisters that had been levelling her with a fierce scowl.
Returning their scowls with a fiercer one of hers, Zina spoke while staring intently at the two golden Red Sisters; the blood collectors. "And please, make sure you speak of your findings loud enough for anyone purporting to take revenge on what has happened this night to hear."
