Chapter 200: The One Who Stole The Staff

ZINA

"The Sighter?" Fionna repeated with an annoyed frown. It was obvious that Fionna had been waiting to hear some grand name of the more popular, more capable well known people participating in the tournament, but Zina had all but dashed that hope by calling an unknown name.

When Zina had read the report by South, she had thought the same as Fionna. That was until South explained further that the man in question was from the Western Regions.

It was that fact that put things into perspective. People from the Western regions were not as well known as the other regions particularly because they were recluse and loved to stay on their own. Zina figured it could be said she was from the West too if she was indeed from the Screamers Pack. Not like she had any doubt about that fact anymore, but culture demanded that a child’s origin is their fathers place, and Zina was yet to know anything about her father.

Shaking off her wandering thoughts, Zina tried to explain to Fionna. "He’s someone from the West, but it is said that he is a good finder."

Fionna’s doubt only seemed to grow. "Someone from the West? Those bastards are not to be trusted."

Zina recoiled from the bite in her words. Clearing her throat, she said, "I do not believe prejudice will get you out of the first stage of the tournament. In case you haven’t noticed, the Alpha King is using this stage to test for the people who have the best ability to work as a team."

Fionna said nothing, and Zina slightly hesitated before she continued. "I am aware the Red Sisters are far from teamworkers. They isolate you people and make you work like a lone wolf... carrying that mindset will not help you if you in fact truly intend to be one of the Four."

To her credit, Fionna didn’t seem angry about the jab. "Fine. What do you think I should do?" She asked.

Zina contained her smile while she answered impassively. "I think you should get close to this man called the Sighter. Work with him and see how many artifacts you can gather. They speak of him as someone that can find anything no matter where it is hidden. I believe if you work together, there might yet be hope to pass the first tournament."

Fionna nodded grimly while she repeated the words, ’the Sighter’ less distastefully than she had spoken it before. The door to her room banged, and Seraph approached them, glancing a bit fearfully at Fionna who was still clothed in dark leather as a Red Sister before she addressed Zina.

"Beta DireWolf here to see you, Theta."

Fionna grumbled, but before she could attempt a quick escape of the room before she ’strangled’ Marcus, the other man appeared from behind Seraph.

"Why, thank you for leading the way Seraph." The man said almost broodingly while Seraph blushed slightly before she collected herself and quickly excused herself from their presence. Zina observed the scene with equal parts of confusion and dread; she couldn’t have Marcus causing a commotion at her dwellings with that fake fine face of his.

Meanwhile, Fionna, realizing that her escape would no longer be possible, crossed her arms in her front, glaring at Marcus who did a good job at ignoring the presence of the woman together. That only served to incense Fionna further if the anger that rolled off her in waves was anything to go by.

"I have found the culprit." Marcus said grimly, his voice losing its earlier charm.

Zina stood upright, her senses at alert. "Who was it? Who took the staff?"

"Someone that I’ve been ordered to spy on. Surprisingly, this very act of hers seemed to have escaped my knowledge.

Zina’s hackles were raised further at that. There could only have been one person who could order Marcus to spy on someone and that was Daemon. Who was this person?

"Who is it?" Zina repeated in a slightly high-pitched voice.

"I shall have you know that I am only reporting this to you first because his majesty is occupied. Afterwards, I shall take this matter to him."

"Get on with it already," Fionna said in a scathing tone, "the suspense is getting old."

Zina was a bit startled at Fionna’s slight childishness. But she supposed that was what it meant when they said there are certain people who brought out the worst in others.

Yet again, Marcus didn’t look at the woman for once while he answered. "Freya Fergus."

Zina froze.

Daemon’s first mate?

Why?

Why would she?

Without thinking much about it, she headed for the door, only one destination in her mind.

"Where are you going to Theta?" Marcus growled, following closely behind.

"No one, no matter their status or lack thereof, is allowed to waltz into my room and touch my things."

"Beats me why she would touch some useless stick...." Marcus drawled, his voice taunting her for a truth that Zina wasn’t certainly going to tell him about.

Which was the fact that the staff might be more than just a staff.

"Is everything useless to you?" Fionna interjected, choosing that moment to speak of her own anger, "surely, you did not get rid of my keepsake because you thought it was useless?"

Zina felt Marcus stop walking, and for some reasons, she too stopped walking as she turned to the two following closely behind her. Fionna’s normally clear face was painted red from titillating anger while Marcus had on the most bored expression.

"Indeed," he taunted her, preparing to say things that Zina was sure he should not speak of, "your keepsake happens to be the most useless thing I’ve ever seen in my entire existence. And useless things only deserve to be thrashed."

Zina watched as Fionna’s expression darkened to the point of coldblooded rage. Her eyes were slitted while her whole body trembled as if she was wracked with bad tremors. And next thing, Fionna was raining down impossible-to-track-with-the-mere-eyes blows on Marcus.
