Chapter 199: They Call Him The Sighter.

ZINA

Zina only replayed the conversation she had with her mother only when she managed to escape the Capital Square and was now in the confines of her room. Without wasting much time, she summoned Ablanch who kept apologizing over and over again for what happened that morning.

"Even if you must tear into the castle and turn it upside down, you must find my staff." Zina ordered him when she managed to calm the warrior down.

Ablanch wore a grim, determined look as he nodded and went off for his task, but something told her that just Ablanch wouldn’t be enough. With the warning from her mother to hide the staff away, a sense of urgency had taken over. She had always known there was something more to her indestructible staff. And now that her mother made it out to be something evil, unease pooled at her stomach at the thought of the staff turning up missing that morning.

She needed someone in a high position like Daemon to help her. With such help, she would be able to locate whoever might have snuck into her room and taken her staff.

But Daemon was beyond swamped with his new duties, and Zina didn’t want to saddle him with her burdens especially in view of the fact that it might sound like child’s play to cause a fuss about a missing piece of stick. Even that reasoning didn’t sound very sound in her head.

A different idea came to her mind, and she ventured out in search of Marcus. Currently, Daemon was meeting with the NorthSteed Pack and apparently, strangers weren’t allowed to grace the meeting.

It so happened that Marcus was a stranger as far as the NorthSteed Pack was concerned. Already, the DireWolf Pack and the NorthSteed Pack were locked in a silent battle of which Pack was most relevant to Daemon; although Daemon was able to make sure that the silent battle wouldn’t surface out in the open... yet.

The implication was that Marcus was roaming about freely with nothing to do.

"Beta DireWolf." Zina said, acting like it was a coincidence that she encountered Marcus and not that she had been intentionally looking for the man.

"Soon to be Emeritus Theta." Marcus said in return, a knowing glint shining in his eyes.

"Fine. I was indeed looking for you. I need your help with something...." Zina admitted, allowing her words to hang in the air.l

"Bold of you to think that I would do anything for you." Was his response while he raised one eyebrow at her.

Zina smiled, "Even if it means that I will owe you a favour. Especially in view of the fact that I am the Theta and will always continue to be the Theta."

Marcus crossed his arms as if thinking about it. "Fine. What do you need?"

Zina told him about the staff and the fact that it had gone missing from her room. After launching a sorry tale of how the staff was the only connection to her past and how dear she held onto it, Marcus agreed to investigate it in exchange of owing him one.

Her tale might not have actually moved him, but it was much better than telling him the truth of why she was looking for the staff. It would be seven hours before the banquet reached, so Zina herself personally joined in searching for the staff.

All the maidservants that possessed a pass to her chambers were questioned, including the vast numbers of servants and slaves that worked in her wing alone, but apparently, no one knew a thing about it. It was almost as if her staff had acquired a wing of its own and flew out of her room.

She and Seraph came up empty handed and Ablanch who was searching the castle sent word at every one hour interval that he was unable to find it on his end. It wasn’t until it was two hours to the banquet that evening did she have a visitor, and the person was none other than Fionna.

"Have you forgotten that you offered to help me?" The woman said the moment she stepped into Zina’s room that had been turned upside down from the search.

Zina sighed, blowing a strand of hair from her face as she stood upright from the corner of her room she had been searching through. "Of course not. However, I do not believe there’s much I can do for you this first round."

"So much for your help...." Fionna hissed, "I do not believe you’re as forthcoming as you were before. It seems to me that you’re busy trying to help yourself from your own precarious situation."

Zina ignored the woman’s attempt to rouse her anger while she resumed her search from where she stopped. "Having to compete for my own position is hardly precarious, Fionna."

"Only you would say that...." Fionna responded in a wistful voice that gave Zina a stop. She stood upright, dusting her hands against each other while she took in the other woman.

"Contrary to what you think, I’ve already looked over the people on your team."

Fionna’s eyes widened, but otherwise, the woman didn’t muster an expression of curiosity or whatnot. "You have?"

Zina nodded. It was the first thing she did when she came back from the coronation. She had sent a letter to the South Heralder to have it done.

"Out of the ninety-three teams, I would say your team certainly does have it bad."

Fionna’s nonchalant expression fell, replaced by a look of.... Anger. "Are you saying that I’ve been bundled together with the worst of the worse?"

"As were more than fifty other teams." Zina said, rolling her eyes while she recounted the contents of South’s report.

"Is that supposed to console me?"

"I suppose not, but there’s one person on your team that might be worth a hundred capable men given the nature of the first game," Zina recited the exact words that South had used in his report. She grinned while Fionna listened, a shadow of curiosity on her face while she waited expectantly for Zina’s next words.

"They call him the Sighter."
