Chapter 172: To Quell A Rebellion
Chapter 172: To Quell A Rebellion
ZINA
"What has your Alpha promised you? I mean should he succeed, what will be your state? Will you still be alive or perhaps turn up dead?"
The man, even though he was the one holding the weapon, shook under the weight of Zina’s words and the truth that it could possibly hold. It was popular knowledge that Alpha BloodMoon was far from being a kind man. His ruthless tendencies were fully unleashed during Eldric’s reign and he had only seemed to calm down a bit with Daemon’s comeback... but even Zina knew that was a facade on his own part.
Just the mere knowledge that his Epsilons had hesitated to take his side was enough for him to execute them all, and Zina intended to play well on that fact.
Knowing the seed of fear was already planted, Zina pressed forward. "If I were to say... if he succeeds, your heads will be decorating the city gates."
A gasp sounded from somewhere far behind, and Zina heard another man plead for his life in a silent prayer that her ears picked up. Smiling even broader, Zina spread her arms out. "However, it’s a good thing that he won’t succeed then, is it not?"
The head didn’t speak, but the Beta yelled that they should pay her no heed. The stupid man didn’t stop screaming until Fionna knocked him out cold much to Zina’s astonishment. Ignoring the commotion behind her, Zina pressed forward.
"This is truly a first and final offer; drop your weapons and follow me. When you do so, Alpha King Daemon will surely reward your efforts magnanimously and he will forget this stain."
It was a bold statement on her part for she knew well that she and Daemon didn’t exactly share a history where she made decisions on her behalf. But as far as she was concerned, her desperate actions were justifiable since Daemon was barely around to protect his own throne.
"Will he truly take us in as his own should we fight for him?" The man asked hesitantly, suspicious eyes raking over Zina.
"I swear on my honour as Theta." Zina said solemnly as she held their eyes, hoping that she would never regret making such a brash promise.
The men nodded grimly, and just like that, they all dropped their weapons, relaxing their posture. The head of the Epsilons dropped to the floor abruptly, startling Zina.
"We will fight for the Theta and the Great Seer of the North!" The man screamed like a warrior charging into battle.
The rest of the Epsilons dropped to the floor in the same manner, eyes bearing stealth. "We will fight for the Theta and the Great Seer of the North!" They repeated in the same manner with a shout of their own.
"We will uphold the honour of the North and keep to the mandate of Kingdom as Thane NorthSteed the great mandates!" The head screamed again.
"We will uphold the honour of the North and keep to the mandate of Kingdom as Thane NorthSteed the great mandates!" The rest echoed in a shout-like roar.
While the gesture was truly moving, Zina couldn’t help the fear that crept up her neck and held her captive.
Just what was she doing?
But she quickly brushed the fear off as she gestured for Commander Leo who was already commanding their warriors to collect the BloodMoons weapons. They might have come to some sort of agreement with the BloodMoon Epsilons, but that didn’t mean Zina was about to turn her back on them when they were bearing external weapons.
"Theta, do you think it wise to let them come with us?." the commander said gruffly, dark eyes observing the men that were once their rival a moment ago.
Zina had been expecting the objections from the man. So she decided to tow the path of reasoning with him. "In that case, do tell me. Do you think Beta DireWolf has sufficient resources to ward off a surprise attack from a thousand warriors?"
The man looked sceptical and unconvinced. "It is actually impossible for Alpha BloodMoon to wade his way to the ice castle with a thousand warriors undetected. He would have to pass the IceSavage Pack if he intends to make it a short journey, and the sentinels would have long sent messages back to the Ice Castle before that."
"What if the IceSavage Pack is in bed with them?"
The man’s eyes widened in surprise. "Theta, do you know what you speak of? The ancestors of the IceSavage Pack pledged a blood covenant to serve as loyal sentinels to the NorthSteeds. It’s a century long vow that has never been broken so there is no way Alpha IceSavage won’t report it."
Zina didn’t bother to contend with the fact that they were now in an era where vows and long aged promises were easily broken without fear of the consequences. Instead she said, "in the very letter you gave me yourself, Beta DireWolf asked that we be careful of the IceSavage Pack. Not only that, but I’ve reasons to believe that Brestom IceSavage, the first son of the Alpha, has been raising an undocumented army."
Commander Leo was rendered speechless as he only kept opening his mouth and closing, no choker to words forming.
"Do you still think it’s unwise for me to gather as many allies as we can afford?" Zina whispered harshly. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Fionna tying up the Beta to one of their carriages.
"What can I do for you then, Theta?" The Commander finally asked, his voice holding his acquiescence.
"What’s the fastest way for us to get back to the castle?" She asked.
"The strongest shifters will run in their form, and the others will use horses. But I fear we might not find that many horses to convey us.
Zina faced the head of the BloodMoon Epsilons. "Might I know your name, Sir?"
"Commander Klint," the man answered strongly with a bow, "Commander Klint ThornShade at your service, Theta."
"Commander Klint, you and Commander Leo will gather as many horses as you can in fifteen minutes." Zina said, producing a pouch of money, "do not bother about the price and get as much as you can."
When they finally came back, they had only managed to gather about twelve horses and three of them looked malnourished. Apparently, in addition to Alpha BloodMoon taking off with all the Pack’s horses, he had been slowly buying out all the market horses, leading to scarcity of them.
No matter, Zina departed with Fionna, Commander Klint, a hundred soldiers in their wolf forms that were at least a level four shifter and possessed wolves that were strong enough to run the remaining route.
Zina, who still hadn’t mastered how to shift for lack of practice on her own side coupled with the fact that she was an ordinary shifter rode one of the horses they had departed with on top speed alongside twelve other riders till the point that she wanted to puke and retch everything she ate the previous night.
Her stomach rioted madly against her, and she sweated badly despite the fact that the first signs of winter cold were already present in the North. She rode until her buttock were literally on fire and she was tempted to cry out from the pain of the torture.
When they finally reached the long wounding steps leading to the Ice Castle popularly nicknamed the crystal steps, Zina made a vow to become a better shifter while a stream of blood and the screams of battle greeted them.
