Chapter 173: Learning About Her Origins

As long as you don’t sever yourself away from me, I too will not Daemon

— Zina to Daemon; Chapter 147: I Know

ZINA

The crystal steps gleamed crimson underneath the setting sun that painted the sky a hue of red. One who didn’t take a close look at the steps would think that the sun was responsible for its new found colour. But Zina, who could well see the amount of red liquid that was pouring out like a stream knew that its origin was blood.

She didn’t stare at it too much and what it could mean. Instead, she sprung into action, commanding the one hundred she was with to enter into the castle.

But when they stormed into the castle’s keep, instead of a battle as they had expected, what they witnessed was the evidence of the massacre of the BloodMoon warriors while none other than Daemon stood at the head, looking bored out of his mind.

Zina froze, the scene looking like something out of a cheap troupe performance. Alpha BloodMoon’s body was glued to one of the keep’s gargoyle, a silver dagger without a hilt embedded in his heart, connecting him to the ugly statue.

Yaren stood by the dead man’s body, wearing a distasteful look. Meanwhile, the BloodMoon warriors that managed to survive the massacre all bowed before Daemon, looking scared out of their mind.

All eyes turned to Zina and her companion at their sudden entrance, but Zina ignored all of them, staring at Daemon NorthSteed himself.

Control.

Power.

Manipulation.

What had the man done again? She had been so scared, so out of her mind with fear at the fact that the BloodMoons and the IceSavages might upturn Daemon’s rule before it properly started.

She had ridden a damn horse like her life depended on it, so scared that just one misstep and everything as she knew it would come crumbling down.

She didn’t necessarily need to hear the story behind the comical scene before her to know that Daemon had done it again. He had played them all like a chess piece on his prized board.

Zina tried to push away the despondent thoughts and instead revel in the fact that it seemed everything was fine, but she was beginning to find out that she was not that selfless.

She glared at Daemon instead, almost unaware of the fact that the men behind her had fallen to their knees before him. In fact, all in the room save Marcus and Yaren were on their knees. Even without beholding the sight of his wolf, they still very much felt the strength and power he exuded.

Daemon was just that kind of man. His presence, enigmatic and his eyes magnetic. His might unrivalled, and his strength uncontended.

Never had he found the need to resort to a show of strength like shifting in his form before he could command the respect of anyone he so pleased. Charisma was embedded in him and the man flaunted the ability shamelessly.

All he had to do was simply be present in order to command. His presence alone always sufficed without the need for dramatic words and whatnot.

Daemon stared back at her, and surprisingly, he started walking towards her. Zina forced her stiff limbs into a bow as he reached her. He didn’t say a word, instead, tugging lightly at her arm as if to ask her to follow him, but Zina buried her feet into the ground, refusing to move anywhere.

Obviously, if Daemon decided to put his strength into it, he could have easily moved Zina. But the man was wise enough to not try such with her.

He released her, stretching out his hand to him instead.

"Come with me, Zina."

Zina.

She shook her head, maintaining her bow, her eyes turned to the ground. "Your majesty, I’ve committed a crime. I know it’s against the law for any of your subordinates to command an army with your permission. However, I thought the situation to be grave enough to warrant such interference from me. I would gladly accept any punishment from you."

Even without seeing his face, Zina could feel the frustration that rolled off him in waves.

"At ease, Zina."

She didn’t move despite the urging command.

A bite of annoyance laced to his tone. "At ease, Theta."

That was finally when Zina released her stance, meeting his dark eyes with a defiant one of hers. The man had treated her no less than his subordinate, and now he was annoyed that she refused to answer him when he used her name.

He upped and left for three weeks, leaving her with a mere letter that praised the diamonds she wore the night when he had announced a sudden tournament. And now he was back abruptly, pulling off an execution that would surely be sung in the canals of history for centuries to come.

All of that, he did without saying a word to her. Zina understood that the man felt like she asked too much of him, but Zina never thought it was too much to ask him to confide in her when it came to such big decisions that could create a shitstorm.

His eyes cooled to something compelling. "Please, come with me." He asked again, this time as a plea.

Zina smiled sardonically. "As you wish, your majesty."

And then she was following him into his office.

Zina first noticed that the windows and vases had been replaced. There was not a single sign of the destruction her unusual scream had caused. Daemon’s office was back to its impressive, brooding space.

"I see you redesigned." Zina commented casually while she made sure that she kept enough space between the both of them. She didn’t want to continue seeing the unusual dark circles he possessed which could only have hinted at him being hard at work. Nor did she want to keep noticing the weariness that surrounded him.

"Just three weeks I’ve been gone and now you’re playing the role of the estranged wife." He drawled playfully while Zina maintained a stoic expression.

If he thought teasing her would bring him into her good grace, then he was about to learn just how petty she could be.

Daemon apparently got the memo for he started explaining himself even without Zina asking. He scratched his hair awkwardly, a gesture Zina understood was his nervous trait.

"I set a trap for the BloodMoons and I knew my absence would cause Alpha BloodMoon to act...." He explained.

Silence.

"And he fell right into the trap. Honestly, I meant to slowly shake off the power of the Five High Ranked Packs and this is a good step...."

Silence.

"I apologize for not letting you know, you must have been fearful."

Zina scoffed internally. She got the idea that Daemon wasn’t one to easily say sorry and this was the second time he was apologizing to her. And yet, that wasn’t quite enough to stir an answer out of her.

Even though Marcus explained a part of the reason why Daemon was away, Zina couldn’t find it in her to ask Daemon what he found out about the masked man, or her origins. But she didn’t even need to for Daemon’s next words veered to that.

"I’ve also learnt the reason behind your screams..." he trailed hesitantly while Zina stilled as she listened to the thundering of her heart.
