How to jump off a cliff? Just close your eyes, and then jump.

ZINA

Zina was shocked at herself the moment she stood at the door of the banquet room. Normally, she would have been somewhere in the corridors, twisting her fingers, her heart in her mouth.

But right then, she was possessed by the god of courage, and it was almost as if she was anticipating being in the ballroom.

It seemed as though her reservations of being in the same room with Modrich had faded away, but not really. It was that daringly, she had a new mission, and that mission included seeing Daemon’s expression the moment she stepped into the room.

What would she see in those dark eyes of his? Would the intelligence normally inlaid in them melt into something liquid and undignified? Would his control snap to tethers? Or would he still be the Daemon NorthSteed she always knew, the one who could hold onto his control no matter the place and time.

Soon she would find out.

The guards who had been trying so hard not to glance at her cleavage drew the giant door open, announcing her presence.

"Theta of the NorthSteed Pack and the whole Arctic North, Zina WolfKnight. Honouring the invitation of Restorer Daemon NorthSteed."

Zina was not overdressed at all, neither was she underdressed. But all that didn’t matter the moment his eyes glued on hers.

As she walked forward, ignorant of everyone around them, it felt like she had been trapped in some deadly slow motion where all she could do was hold his eyes. She noticed everything...

...the way his nose flared, and the way his eyes darkened.

...the way the cup of drink he was once swirling froze in the air, and the way he tilted his head up.

...the way his eyes finally made their tortuous descent from her eyes only to rest on her lips. The way they lingered there for seconds that stretched to minutes before they trailed down to her neckline where the diamonds were clasped.

All of it happened in seconds before Zina came to stand before him at the long dining table where he sat. His eyes drank her in, but they didn’t go lower than her neckline yet... almost as if he was afraid of what would happen should he dare continue his sojourn.

It didn’t matter, Zina promised to show him the very thing he refused to see, the very thing he was starved for.

She swept a dramatic, low bow before him, her eyes not lowering as they should before a monarch. They were glued on him instead.

"Theta Zina WolfKnight greets your majesty."

It was the bow that caused it, for finally, his eyes were now glued to her cleavage just as something dangerous flitted through them.

He emptied the remaining contents of his drink, his eyes quickly coming up.

"Stand, Theta." He commanded in a deep, almost hoarse, voice that reverberated the room.

Zina did as she was told, and now satisfied with her experiment, she decided to take in her surroundings and the people picked in the room. Alphas and their subordinates from various packs in the Arctic North were present. The WolfKnights and DireWolf pack were present, same with some other foreign packs she couldn’t recognise. But more than them, Zina’s eyes took in the representatives of the four great evils.

The Tiger Wolf of the South that Daemon defeated to become Alpha DireWolf, the Red Sisters of the East, the Night Mages of the West, and the Masqueraders of the Central.

They were all present.

Zina ignored the stares on her and took her seat by Daemon’s right hand, just directly by his side. It was then that she realised that she was his only direct subordinate that existed. The pack was now without a Beta, Delta, and Gamma so naturally, those seats were empty.

It caused her to think of how she had managed to survive the carnage that claimed the lives of those people. Was it really the fact that she had helped Daemon’s reign—a help that she was realising was in fact, meagre in comparison to his grand plans. Or was it the mate bond that had prevented him from meting out an equally harsh fate on her.

Zina brushed off the thoughts as she tried her possible best to school her expression. Daemon’s presence besides her was not helping, but she figured she tortured him as well.

He didn’t pointly look at her, nor did he address her until the official time for the banquet to start.

Without theatrics or anything of the sort, the man simply said, "Let us dine and wine to our hearts content!" He cheered, his wine glass thrusted in the air.

The guests followed suit, replicating the gesture as the banquet began.

It was exactly what Zina anticipated it to be; so much drinking and less feasting. Werewolves had this thing where a man who could swallow the most alcohol was designed to be the most accomplished. Ridiculous, but what did she know?

Zina sipped her drink, her eyes meeting that of Freya Fergus. Seraph had been apt indeed when she described the woman’s dress to be one that would sweep the banquet hall.

Zina resisted the urge to smirk at her and simply raised her glasses as if they were making a friendly toast which they were not. Her eyes were searching for Norami Talga when something heavy against her laps stopped her cold.

She whipped her head to the source, and she stilled when she realised it was Daemon’s hands, making an ungraceful descent down her body.

"Well, aren’t you dressed for the occasion?" He drawled, not taking his eyes off some random Alpha that was gushing about some business he wished to bring into the Arctic North.

Zina’s hands darted out to stop his hand, but he shrugged her fingers off like some pest.

She must have turned the colour of her dress as her eyes searched the crowd to see if any noticed what he was doing to her, under the banquet table nonetheless!

It didn’t seem like anyone noticed, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t mortified nonetheless.

"Are you kidding me?" She struggled to say just as his hand gripped her waist.

"Kidding you?" He said innocently while the Alpha still drowned on from his left side, "when you made that dramatic bow and your eyes held mine, I thought you were asking for this."

Zina gasped just as his fingers left her waist, travelling lower while he bunched her dress up as if he was a hungry man in search of naked flesh.

"Not here!" She squealed in a low voice, wondering why she had to be the only one sitting on that table with him. Where was Yaren and Marcus by the way?

"Where will you like it then? Sprawled on the table? I would love that save for the fact there are plenty of eyes here... and I unfortunately don’t like to share."

The man had a dirty mouth, and Zina was almost ashamed that she was turned on by that fact alone instead of being repulsed as she should be.
