Chapter 159: True Diamonds

ZINA

A dress arrived at Zina’s room exactly at evening just when she had started to prepare for the banquet.

A dress none like anything that she had ever worn.

Due to her position as Theta, she normally wore long flowing gowns that fanned out like a ball gown from her waistline, and covered all of her proportions, and did not bare a single part of her skin. The point is, those gowns were usually very decent and very chaste-like.

But this gown... let’s just say that it certainly wasn’t very decent nor was it very chaste-like.

"Finally!" Seraph squealed while examining the blood-red dress that possessed a harrowing low neckline.

Zina had a feeling that the dress had come from an unexpected source, so instead of gushing like Seraph, she searched for some sort of card that would convey its origins, and she found one.

’Tonight, representatives of four of the Five Great Evils will be present. The Eldermen now send their regards and support your bond with the Alpha King.

Let their fear of you only blossom when they see you in crimson glory. Let them know that it is only you who is fit to stand by his side. The Temple fully stands behind you.

Sybril.

Zina clutched the note to her chest, her heart beating erratically. Like she had suspected, the banquet wasn’t just an out of the spur decision made by Daemon, it would seem as though the man had planned it for a long time if such people would be in attendance.

Zina had almost forgotten about the Five Great Evils in the whirlwind of Daemon’s confession and her encounter with Igar. Now she read Sybril’s note, her mind went back to the truly surprising encounter she had with Norima Talga of the Night Mages. If anything, the woman had made it abundantly clear that for some ancient prophecy, the Five Great Evils all want her dead.

Zina had, of course, told Sybril of the encounter via a letter although she and the woman needed to have a serious face-to-face conversation.

"This corset is simply gorgeous..." Seraph fawned as she continued admiring the dress.

The Temple fully stands behind you.

That sounded nice to hear if ever that was the truth. But it wasn’t the Temple that Zina wished to stand behind her. It was Daemon she wished for.

She knew it would be too much to ask for his unequivocal trust, but her greed wanted to know everything in his head and every plan of his. They might have overcome a hurdle together, but even a blind man could see that there was a giant emotional wall that separated them.

Zina truly wished to stand tall by his side like the prophecies foretold, but she wanted to earn that place. Just as she was sure Yaren and Marcus earned theirs.

She didn’t wish for the mate bond to be the only tug between them... she wished to be someone he could rely on.

The notion was almost comical in itself. She almost couldn’t imagine Daemon NorthSteed relying on her, but a woman could dream.

Zina stared at herself through the vanity mirror in her room. Her hair had been skilfully made into a high bun with loose braids surrounding it, entwined with knots that made her silver hair frame her face in a wonderful way. She looked fantastic to say but the least, and that was the first time that she thought such about herself.

She stepped into the pool of red dress, and the moment Seraph tied the lace of the corset to her back, it felt as though her breath was knocked out of her.

It had nothing to do with how the corset was so tight that it lifted her breast perfectly, baring just the right amount of cleavage to pull off the perfect decadent look, it had to do with the way her light blue eyes shined with delight as she took in herself.

The gods, who knew that Sybril was this kind of woman. Zina had thought of her as someone reserved, but that opinion was quickly changing in the face of how she now looked.

Her red gown was a ball gown that cinched tightly at her waist and then flowed out in delicate prints. The materia almost had a shine about it, and the dress was a short sleeve that possessed short frills. They exposed her arms, and it made for better contrast against the colour of the dress.

She looked... unlike her. The dress was all flames when in reality for the past six years, she had been a little step away from becoming cold rusting ice buried in the cold seas of the North-Western Borders Seas.

The dress was a fiery thing, tugging at her lone heart. It asked her to dare to live... to dare and breathe properly.

"Sweet goddess, and here I thought that white looked best on you. Who would have thought you could wear any colour just right."

Zina shot the maidservant a playful glare just as something cold was clasped against her neck.

Diamonds.

Huge Diamonds that formed a choker of diamond circles on her neck.

Her eyes widened on seeing them. She turned from the mirror to properly look at Seraph.

"Is this what I think it is?"

Seraph smirked. "Surely you did not think that your Alpha and mate wouldn’t send you something for tonight. These are true diamonds of course!" She finished with a squeal.

Zina fingered the cold stones that were heavy for more than one reason. Between her heaving breasts and the necklace was her heart that beat like crazy.

It almost felt like Daemon was saying something although not necessarily to her...but she could hear it anyways for after all, he had offered her one of the most expensive stones in their world.

An offer that would sweep any woman off her glided feet, and she was just any woman.

The words she could hear that he wasn’t saying were in the lines of....

’Do not worry about the WolfKnights... so they offer diamonds? Well good thing I’ve them.’

’You deserve the most prized possession.’

Zina shook her head vigorously, unwilling to allow the thoughts to settle in. Because why her? Why would Daemon spare her something so precious?

"When was this sent?" Zina asked because that was the only question she could think of.

Seraph scowled as if the words she intended to say next were beneath her. "It was sent through Beta DireWolf this evening. You were resting, so I collected them on your behalf. Although that was not until the man made it clear I would be dead meat if anything happens to them."

Zina merely chuckled while Seraph helped her wear matching earrings.

"It’s time to go. The banquet will be starting soon." Seraph announced when all Zina did was to continue staring at herself in the mirror.

"Am I not dressed too much?" Zina hesitated, "I mean, it’s just a banquet...." She trailed, suddenly feeling unsure of herself.

"Nonsense!" Seraph scowled, "dressed too much? You should hold your words until you actually see that woman Freya whatever and the Night Mages that are in attendance. I hear the train of their gowns would sweep our banquet hall alright!"
