Chapter 158: Truthful Lies

ZINA

"You said you trust me right?"

Zina had officially hit an all time low by using Daemon’s words against him, but surprisingly, the fire in his eyes cooled as his hand caressed her chin, tilting her head up as if to get her to properly look at him.

"Of course I trust you Zina."

The gods. Just who was this man and what would she do with all the things that he was doing to her? All the emotions that he was causing her to feel? Just what would she do?

Zina smiled, but even she could feel as though it was strained. "Then please, do not attempt to find more about this. Believe that I’ve got everything under control."

Her words were an earnest plea, but against the thing that resembled like hurt that travelled in his eyes, she wasn’t so sure anymore if she was doing the right thing

Daemon’s expression tightened with something she couldn’t point out. It was as if he was having a raging battle with himself. Zina understood that he was never a man to give up his control, but if they were going to make their mate bond blossom into more, then sacrifices were inevitable.

And right then, Zina wanted him to back off. To never have a knowledge of the very ugly things of her life.

Finally, his expression softened. "Fine." He promised in a low growl that conveyed that it was a hard decision on his part. "But if for some reason your life comes into danger because of this, then I will have no choice but to break my promise."

Zina broke into a grin. She didn’t know exactly how she would do it, but she was convinced that Igar would be the one begging for his life when all this was over.

Daemon’s expression quickly morphed into that of amusement. In a whisper, he said, "That aside, believe me when I say I am hurt that you haven’t inquired whether I truly intend to take the woman Alpha Modrich offers to me as my wife."

Zina rolled her eyes at that. Leaning into him until their faces were mere inches apart, she whispered back, "I’ve spent too much time in your games to know that you’re plotting something. Besides, the girl is even worse looking than Bella. Nothing to be insecure about there."

"Ahh," Daemon drawled in a delicious whisper that shot straight to Zina’s core. His breath caressed her face, and as usual, he smelt like a well groomed pine forest. "I really came here to see that expression of jealousy plastered on your face. Believe me when I say you wear jealousy well."

Zina smiled shrewdly, acting like she was slightly vexed by his words. "Not as well you wear narcissism, your majesty."

"What a shame," he said, his eyes unabashedly trailing down her body, stopping at her breasts. "I never imagined my mate to be this ameliorable. I thought you would be a fireball, objecting to my every decision as your former self usually does."

Zina returned the favour of his roaming eyes, her own eyes coming to rest on his lips. "Back there was your mate, soon, your Theta shall air her own objections."

"Mmm... I must say I prefer the mate side of you then. Theta Zina certainly has her charm, but mate Zina is simply way too hot especially when she threatens to take the life of the woman who is supposed to marry me."

Zina giggled, like actually giggled, while her hand came up to playfully hit his chest. He easily caught it, his lips descending to place a decadent kiss on her fingers.

Every knuckle of hers were subjected to his torturous worship while Zina stilled, her heart beating erratically. Finally, his head came up, his dark eyes meeting hers as Zina could have sworn she saw flames combust between the both of them.

Zina, who simply couldn’t contain the intensity of the stare between the both of them chose that moment to speak of something that has been bothering her.

"You’ve to hold your coronation soon, your majesty."

His eyes betrayed nothing as he said, "I shall leave that within your purview then."

Well that had been easy. For some reasons, Daemon had taken to answering as a ’Restorer’ while putting off his coronation. Zina had thought that perhaps it was due to some sentiments on his part, but judging by the easy way he gave in, she figured maybe not.

His eyes shined with something distant as he said. "I am holding a banquet tonight to welcome our guests. You will certainly receive the invitation later, but I expect to see you there, Theta."

And just like that, they had switched back to formalities. Zina figured she had taken the lead first in that regard so she merely offered him a smile even though she knew more than anything that she would rather be elsewhere than in the same room with the WolfKnight’s.

"Of course your majesty." She answered easily, even smiling at that. Since she had assured Daemon that she would be alright, she didn’t want to raise his hackles again.

Daemon rose to his feet, dragging her up with him. Zina easily fell against his chest while his dark eyes swallowed her whole.

Zina wanted to ask him what his plans were with regards to the WolfKnights. But for the sake of not acting the role of the needy mate, she had taken to studying him instead to figure it out.

His lips descended for hers without warning, and Zina instinctively closed her eyes, waiting for the all too familiar kiss. And yet, when his lips touched hers, there was almost nothing familiar with the way his lips ravished hers and his tongue played her to the fine tune of a bard’s song.

Zina lifted herself up on her toes, her hands wounding against his neck, while his rough yards gripped her waist loosely.

He tugged, nipped, and kissed like he was hungry for her, while Zina chose to remain an obedient receiver of all his care and attention. She let her lead them into bliss, while she basked in the light of his attention that shone on her.

Reluctantly, he disengaged from the kiss, staring at her like she was an alien. The storm in his eyes spoke more of satisfaction than hunger.

"You will be the death of me...." He muttered low enough that Zina almost missed it, his fingers roaming through his hair.

"I shall see you tonight then." He said, and without another word, he left her room, leaving his book behind.

Zina picked the book, flipping through it.

She realised then that she couldn’t actually read.

*DAEMON*

The moment he stepped out of her room, the fog cleared and he could think more clearly.

Marcus, who had been waiting outside for him, curled an eyebrow at the sight of him. "At least you were getting some action unlike me. Put me to some serious work, Daemon. Babysitting Freya Fergus isn’t just my style."

Daemon ignored the man. "Have Yaren look into the Beta of the WolfKnight Pack." he said, truly wishing he would feel regret at his actions, but none of the emotion accosted him.

There was no way he wasn’t prying when the look in her eyes had gutted him like his abdomen was being torn open.

"Seriously, now it’s an errand job?"

Daemon rolled his eyes, tired of the man’s ramblings. "We will start executing Plan House tonight at the banquet."

Marcus grinned. "Finally, some fucking action."
