Chapter 150: Her Origins: The Screamers Pack

Organisation:

Meaning; Usually used as a derogatory word to refer to a group of people and is a way of insulting them to the effect that they are not a pack.

PS: Some of the organisations and terms mentioned here like the Witch Seers were first mentioned in Chapter 93—Alpha Supreme Daemon.

DAEMON

The Screaming Pack were at their root, a werewolf family that possessed an unusual ability. They were sometimes referred to the legendary folklore banshee for they could project their voice to a large extent and cause great harm with the ability.

The family finally expanded and they grew to thousands hence, earning the status of a pack. They were known as the ’screamers’ for even in wolf form, their howls could be heard from anywhere.

Simply for the fact that they possessed the ability to scream, many ostracised them, taking to calling them an organisation. And during the time of the Great Cleansing, many chanted for their execution too.

The Screaming Pack were not executed due to the fact they resisted violently. However, the Seven Elders of the Witch Seers of the Iron Coast laid a curse on the pack that the line of the true screamers of the pack would thin out until all that was left of the pack were simply people that paraded the name of the pack without the substance of it.

Daemon didn’t believe in bullshits such as curses and whatnot, but regardless, the screamers pack declined over the years until what was left of them were merely people that indeed, simply paraded the name. Despite everything, the Screamers Pack still lived in peace, detaching themselves from worldly affairs.

That was until thirty years ago when everything had unceremoniously changed. The now late Alpha of the Screamers Pack led the pack to introduce ’kingdom-rule’ in the Iron Coast that have long since till now, mainly operated a highly decentralised Pack system.

An attempt to bring the practice of the North to the West was of course, not well received, and the revolt, known as the ’Revolt To Force Kingdom’, led to one of the biggest and bloodiest Pack execution ever known in history.

The Screamers Pack were executed and their heads were hung by the city gates for all to see what would happen to any that attempted to unite the packs of the Iron Coast. However, Alpha Screamers head and that of his only child—his then twenty year old daughter, were nowhere to be found.

And now, exactly thirty years later after that massacre, Daemon heard what was unmistakably the Scream.

One thing was for sure, he could have been wrong in linking Zina to the Matriarchy Pack since she was likely from the Screamers Pack. And if there was ever a well known fact, then it was the fact that the Screamers Pack and the Matriarchy Pack both bore a hatred that ran deep for generations.

"Who is this screamer that you heard?" Yaren asked gravely. "They were executed thirty years ago, and you and I both know that those damned Seven Elders of the Witch Seers cursed them to be the Forbidden."

The Forbidden was the highest tag given to ostracised werewolf’s in their world, but that was besides the point.

"It is Zina." Daemon revealed, and Yaren didn’t even possess the decency to act shocked.

"Just how many things is she?" He said heatedly, his features twisted distastefully.

"Yaren, I didn’t call for this meeting to hear you air your visceral dislike for her over again."

Yaren pinched the space between his brows as if asking for strength from above. "I apologise. So why have you called us?"

"Remember the man my uncle told us about before he died? The one who might be able to link us back to the one called Master?"

Marcus nodded, although he still looked to be in a daze. The man was probably making the connection that the shattered glasses had something to do with Zina.

"The red wolf?" He asked, remembering the name.

"The Theta saw a past vision of a man," Daemon started, recollecting what Zina had told him. "He was with Freya and he wore a cultural masquerade mask that exposed red eyes."

Yaren and Marcus looked taken aback.

"And since when did you start listening to visions, brother?" Yaren asked through narrowed eyes.

Since no when in fact, but this was Zina and Daemon was not lying when he said he trusts her.

Ignoring Yaren’s biting inquiries, Daemon said. "Marcus, we were playing with the theory that the Red Wolf could be named so due to some peculiar feature of his. Red fur, red skin, red eyes... don’t you think this is a good place to start looking from?"

Marcus nodded grimly. "Since you trust the source, then we should start looking from here. After all, it’s not like we have any leads of ours. But if by some rare twist of fate this is our man, then what on earth is he doing with Freya?"

Yaren rolled his eyes. "I understand that Daemon is love whipped by the mate bond, but even you Marcus? Do you truly think this woman saw any vision?" He spat sarcastically, sounding way too bitter for Daemon’s liking.

Daemon was usually very indulgent of Yaren. The man hated Zina of course, and for very good reasons. But whenever his childish side reared up as it was at that moment, Daemon usually questioned the true extents of his control.

"Marcus, speed up the investigation on how Freya got to the Arctic North." Daemon informed his cousin while he faced his brother squarely.

Marcus got the memo. Shooting one twisted smile at Yaren, he turned to leave the room.

Now that it was just the both of them in the room, Daemon decided that this was the best time for him to lay it all before the other man. "Yaren," Daemon stared in a placating tone, "I’ve decided to take Zina WolfKnight as my true mate."

Yaren stilled, all the emotions in the world stretching his face taut... but one that stood out was betrayal, and for the life of him, Daemon couldn’t pretend not to understand why. But the visceral reaction was still stunning nonetheless.

"Why? Do you love her?" Yaren asked as if he truly expected an answer of Daemon.

Daemon smiled cynically. "At least I care enough to not want any other man with her.

Yaren seemed to struggle with his words, while Daemon earnestly wished he would forgive past grievances for his sake. Yaren’s approval meant a lot to him because of the history and pain they shared together, but it didn’t mean he would be changing his decision just for him.

"Have you forgotten the ancient prophecy that the Night Mages left you? The fact that if she stands by your side she will destroy you?"**

Daemon smiled sardonically. "Since when did you start believing in visions, brother?"

Yaren averted his eyes that were coloured with hurt. It also hurt Daemon to see his brother like that, but this was something he didn’t wish to negotiate on.

Yaren smiled cynically, his features twisted. "I hate her, Daemon. And it’s a good thing that you don’t love her at the very least."

Then without another word, Yaren was leaving before Daemon could foolishly say; ’what of when I love her? What if I love her?’
