The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 284: Not Meant to Be
Chapter 284: Not Meant to Be
The extremely saddened look that fogged up the hope shining in her eyes when he told her his answer came back to him too clearly than he would have preferred.
“Your little sister is desperately searching for you so if you’re ever going to wake up, this might be a great time to do so...” he whispered as he kept his eyes on Roxanna’s sleeping face.
Roxanna showed no signs of waking up or acknowledging any of the prince’s words. Darius let out a soft sigh before averting his gaze from her face. Staring at her too much only reminded him of the woman who counted herself as her younger sister.
“Your little sister is very bold...and brave...” Darius said before his lips curved into a grin.
He could still hear Asana’s voice as she described the appearance of the sister that she had been searching for. Unfortunately for her, the current situation barred her from ever seeing her sister ever again. Darius’s eyes turned cold and emotionless when he reminded himself of the secrets that must be kept buried forever. There was no way that he could ever let Asana find out about what really happened to her sister.
“Don’t you worry about her. I’ll make sure that she can live in comfort for the rest of her life in a good place,” Darius promised softly.
The beeping sound of the machines returned to his senses once more and he was certain that that would be the only response that he was ever going to get. According to the doctors, it would be a miracle if Roxanna regained consciousness and yet a bigger miracle if she could return to normal. Sometimes Darius couldn’t help but wonder if Roxanna would have wanted to die rather than being in a vegetative state from which she may never recover from. Ultimately, it was Leonard who understandably refused to let go of her.
“A week. If you don’t wake up in a week, you will most likely never see your precious little sister again,” Darius said sternly although he was certain that she could not hear him.
...
“What is it that you need or want to tell me?” Leonard asked without any sign of interest.
Florian made sure that the door to the private room was locked before turning his attention to his impatient brother. Of all the places that they could have had their conversation, Florian never thought that he would be stuck in a small room inside the laboratory building with Leonard. He cleared his throat as he carefully chose his words. Leonard stared at his younger brother with passive eyes as he waited for Florian to spit out what he had to.
“I’m not sure how you’re going to react to this...” Florian said before hesitating to go on.
“I don’t think you should be worrying about my reactions right now. Just tell me what you need to so that I can get back to Roxanna,” Leonard said with clear irritation.
“Are you seriously still in love with her?” Florian asked before he could stop himself.
Florian immediately regretted his words, but he was even more surprised when Leonard did not seem to react to his question. Leonard still looked as disengaged and disinterested as he was before.
“Is that what you dragged me out here for?” Leonard asked emotionlessly.
“No, that’s not it. I wanted to tell you this before you hear it from someone else, but I guess it has taken me a while...” Florian said before taking another pause.
“Go on...” Leonard urged.
Florian felt his lips turn dry and suddenly he wasn’t sure how to break the news to his brother. After taking in a deep breath, he decided to let his instinct guide him.
“On the night of the full moon, I visited Regina in her room, and we ended up mating,” Florian declared before he stopped to gauge his brother’s reaction.
Although Florian wasn’t quite sure how Leonard would react, he had expected some sort of reaction. The blank look on his brother’s face told him that he was not all bothered by the news that he had just delivered. Leonard’s blue eyes were too calm and even cold. His face betrayed absolutely no emotions and it looked like he couldn’t care less about what he had just been told.
“Is that all?” Leonard asked passively.
“What do you mean by that?” Florian asked without hiding his surprise.
“Is that all that you had to tell me?” Leonard repeated once again.
“Well, yes...” Florian replied as his confusion continued eating at him.
For the life of him, he couldn’t understand Leonard’s absolute lack of reaction.
“Good. Then we’re done here. If there’s nothing else, then I’d like to get back to Roxanna. It’s not everyday that I can visit her...” Leonard said casually.
Without waiting for a response from his younger brother, Leonard turned and headed for the door. Florian could feel his heart racing as his confusion quickly led to a feeling of frustration that he didn’t quite understand. Before he could stop himself, he had moved to swiftly block his brother’s path toward the door.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Leonard asked as his eyes narrowed.
“Why are you like this?” Florian asked in a low whisper.
“Like what?” Leonard asked.
“Well, acting like this has nothing to do with you...” Florian said when he finally realized the source of his frustration and anger.
“Because it has nothing to do with me,” Leonard stated bluntly.
Florian was too shocked at first to believe what he was hearing. He knew well enough that Regina had been in love with Leonard for the longest time ever since they were kids. To make matters worse, he also knew that Leonard was aware of that. Leonard’s expressionless face only made Florian feel angrier.
“How can you say that when you know that she’s in love with you?” Florian asked with a scowl on his face.
Leonard stared at his brother as he failed to understand why Florian seemed so angry. Even after thinking it through, he didn’t think that he had said anything wrong.
