The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid
Chapter 124: The Legend

Chapter 124: The Legend

I should have known that something like this or something very similar to this was the case; however, it just didn’t seem possible. Humans cannot be wolves. As far as I was aware, the king, Prince Darius, Prince Leonard, and Prince Florian, all of them are human.

Being told so seriously and so suddenly that they were wolves was just insane.

“It can’t be...” I replied with the only conclusion that my mind could bring itself to believe.

There is no way that members of the royal family are wolves. Despite all the strange things that I’ve seen and experienced with them, it still cannot be. There’s got to be some kind of explanation for this although I had no idea what it was.

“Well, I guess I can’t really blame you for having that kind of reaction. Perhaps, after hearing the history of this kingdom you will come to understand more...” she said before trailing off.

My eyes shifted to focus on the large projector screen that had morphed into an illustration of a wolf sitting on a throne with many other wolves surrounding it. Madame Sand cleared her throat again and began telling the story right from the beginning.

“A long time ago, a princess was born in a very rich and flourishing kingdom...” she began in a voice that intrigued me beyond measure.

As the story goes, a long long time ago a princess was born to a very generous king and a very loving queen. The kingdom was flourishing after many years of war, and everything seemed to have settled down. The arrival of the princess filled everyone’s heart with joy. Everything was supposed to progress smoothly for the princes; however, a stormy night changed all of that.

The storm came unexpectedly, and it rained all night long. Lighting streaked the sky and thunder roared everywhere. No one really knew what happened or how it happened or who was at fault for what happened. At the break of dawn, the young princess had disappeared without a trace.

“What happened to her?” I asked in wonder.

“No one knew at that time. The little girl just disappeared without a trace during that stormy night...” Madame Sand replied.

“Did she...ever make it back? Did they find her?” I asked curiously.

“They never found her...but she found them...” she replied before she smiled knowingly at me.

Even after more than ten years had passed, the king and queen never stopped looking for their daughter. Even after everyone had given up hope on ever finding the young princess, the loving couple never gave up hope. They firmly believed that their only daughter was alive and that they would find her.

One day, the king received a report from one of his governors that a town along the border of the kingdom was under attack. An army was dispatched to deal with the situation; however, upon arrival, the army found itself up against a large pack of wolves that had taken over the small town. The battle between human soldiers and wolves began and lasted for weeks.

“The details of the fight were never recorded but it is said that both sides suffered huge casualties and the city ended up as a bloody mess. Everything came to an end, when a young woman appeared to negotiate with the leader of the king’s army,” Madame Sand continued with her tale.

Something told me that the young woman must have been the long-lost princess. As to how she managed to survive or how she ended up in the pack of wolves was something that I couldn’t yet figure out.

“The young woman is the princess, right?” I voiced my best guess.

“Correct. The young princess who had disappeared had grown into a beautiful young woman. The general who led the army couldn’t understand how a young woman was with such a large pack of dangerous wolves. Although he doubted the sincerity of the wolves because he couldn’t communicate with them, he decided to have a meeting with the woman on the condition that she came to see him alone...” she continued.

The young woman who styled her hair and clothes in a way that the general had never seen before came to see him all alone at the core of his army’s camp. Although her dress was old and torn and her long hair flowed freely down to her waist and wasn’t styled in the common updo that was expected of women at that time, he found himself drawn to her immediately.

The young woman told him another side of the story that he never knew before. As a soldier he never questioned the caused that he was fighting for as long as it was the wish and will of his king. However, her words finally made him understand the cause of the war that he was fighting with the wild beasts.

“What did she tell him?” I asked.

“She told him that the war started because the humans entered into the beast’s sacred territory and many pups were hunted and killed as a result of that. The king of beast became furious and decided to hunt young children in the village to take revenge. This escalated very quickly until almost every wolf in the area began attacking the people and the town itself,” she replied with a sad shake of her head.

At that point, the story seemed too much like a fairytale for me to even believe that it was true. I doubt that there was any real historical recording of the event. Everything was probably a story simply passed on from one generation to the next until it became a legend of sorts. On top of that, nothing in the story explained how the king and his sons were in fact wolves.

“What happened next?” I asked as I urged her with my eyes for her to hurry up with her tale.

“The young woman proposed to end all attacks if the general could promise her that the villagers would never attack the wolf’s sacred part of the forest again. The general agreed to her request but on one condition...” she said before sighing.
