Chapter 115: His Honorable Maiden

The same butler as before greeted us upon our arrival and it was clear that he had been waiting for the prince’s return. He did not seem surprised to see me with the prince and when he smiled at me, I found myself looking away in embarrassment when I recalled him witnessing the state that I was in the last time I left the prince’s bedroom.

If there was someone who knew without a doubt what had transpired between the prince and me, it would be him. After instructing the butler to prepare clothes and everything that I may need for me, the prince wordlessly led me by the hand deeper into the palace.

“Take a shower and get ready for bed. It’s late, you should get some rest...” Prince Leonard instructed after leading me into a bedroom that I had not been to before.

“Umm...” I murmured in confusion.

I thought that he would take me to his bedroom like before, but it seemed like that wasn’t the case. The bedroom was so luxurious that I couldn’t believe that I would have this bedroom to myself for the night. The king-sized bed with light pink rose-patterned beddings and the white wooden furniture in the room made the room seem suitable for a princess out of a fairytale.

“A maid should be bringing you some clothes and the things that you’ll need soon. You should shower and go to sleep,” the prince repeated.

“What about you?” I asked in a small voice before I could stop myself.

The prince gave me a confused look that made me bite down on my lower lip thinking that it was probably better if I had successfully held my tongue.

“What do you want me to do? Do you want me to stay here with you?” he asked as if he could read my innermost thoughts.

Do I secretly want him to stay here with me?

“I’m not sure...” I replied honestly.

Surprisingly, Prince Leonard smiled and the tense atmosphere between us seemed to dissipate in an instant. At that moment, hope crept into my chest, and I thought that being honest might not be such a bad move after all. I watched as the prince made his way to the cream-colored long leather sofa and sat down on it. I remained standing while I wasn’t sure what I should do.

“Sit down. If you want me to stay, you’ll have to keep me entertained,” the prince said as he patted empty space on the sofa with his hand.

My chest tightened as I approached the sofa and carefully sat down next to him. I felt so nervous now that we were alone, and my heart started racing. Although this was far from the first time that we were alone together like this, I just couldn’t get used to it.

“How...should I entertain you?” I asked softly.

“We can just talk...” he replied casually as he turned to face me.

Even if it’s just talking, I didn’t have anything that I could talk to him about that I thought might perk his interest. While I fidgeted nervously on the sofa, the prince spoke up as if to rescue me.

“I apologize for my father and my brother’s insistence in making you an honorable maiden. True, it is a position that is coveted by many. However, just like I said, you are not suitable to hold a position like that...” he said with clear regret in his voice.

Prince Leonard said something along those lines too when we were meeting with the king. However, it seemed to hurt me even more now that he was saying it directly to me.

“Is it because...I’m not good enough...?” I asked hesitantly.

“Not at all. Just because I say that you’re a bad fit for something doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough for it. Darius is right when he says that some skills can be acquired by studying and training. However, not everything works like that...” Prince Leonard said thoughtfully before he smiled a little at me.

“I don’t think the king would change his mind...” I mumbled.

“He won’t. I’m sorry that you have to go through so many sudden changes. This is at least partly because of my carelessness...” he said before sighing softly.

“It’s fine...” I replied.

“I’ll keep on requesting for you, so you don’t have to worry,” Prince Leonard said, and he suddenly sounded cheerful.

The smile he flashed at me made me feel like everything was going to be alright although I didn’t fully understand why he seemed so concerned about my new appointment. All I could figure out was that if he requested to spend time with me then the other princes can’t do that.

“Ok...” I murmured.

“Hopefully, you don’t prefer to play around with Florian instead of me...” he said with a smile.

“That’s...” I mumbled before I didn’t know how to respond.

His words and tone made it seem like he was teasing me and joking around; however, the way his blue eyes turned cold as they stared deeply into mine made me wonder if he was serious about it. It felt like his eyes were sucking me in and I couldn’t look away anymore. Before I got completely lost in his gaze, there was a knock at the door.

The prince looked away first towards the door before telling the person on the other side that they may enter. A few maids curtsied before entering the room with clothes and many other items. Without a word they went about their job professionally to arrange everything that I would need for the night.

“Thank you,” the prince thanked them when they were done.

“Please have a pleasant night, Your Highness,” one of the maids said.

I watched as they curtsied politely at the doorway before making their exit and closing the door swiftly behind them. That sudden interruption gave me the opportunity to collect myself and I quickly remembered that there were a few things that I had made up my mind to ask the prince the next time that I got the chance, and this was the perfect chance to do so.
