Iris didn’t know why she was crying like this and why her emotions were all over the places, but she was very upset for what alpha Nolan tried to imply. She was tired of listening how they belittled her and compared her.

Before, it was Sofia, who tried to put herself in the picture and now alpha Nolan tried to bring up the topic about his daughter, who was no other than Cane’s destined mate.

Iris didn’t want people started talking about her, not because she disliked the woman she had never met, but because she didn’t want to be compared again. These people would remember Leane along with the event how she died and it would be Iris, who received their hatred again.

Whatever she did, she would never be enough. She thought, she had given up and was no longer care, but it still pained her to be wronged for something she didn’t do.

"Okay," Cane said lightly, as he caressed her back and kissed her forehead. He came here to let her knew that her provocation almost caused trouble and a bloody fight, he also wanted to know why she reacted that way, since it was so out of character for his mate. He could understand if Iris used to be like that, but she was not.

And now, he was thrown out of guard when he ended up comforting his crying mate.

"Did what Nolan say really bothered you?" Cane asked gently, as he cradled her, while Lil Thing stretched its body and stared at both of them, its small eyes were still sleepy, but they filled with curiosity too.

Iris nodded. "He wanted me to be hated by your pack member again..." she sniffled, but a little bit calm now. "And the fact I am still not pregnant..."

Cane immediately stopped her sentence, he pushed her slightly away to cradle her face in between his palms, as he stared deeply into her blue eyes, tears streamed down her cheeks and he disliked to see how distraught she was.

"The fact that you are not pregnant, it’s because of me. Because I am the one with problem here," Cane said firmly. He started to notice that Iris took the blame for their situation, despite knowing it was him, the caused of the problem.

Women were expected to give birth an heir, because that was one way for them to make their men felt happy and fulfilled their duty as a woman, a way for them to survive in this crazy era. No woman without a child would last for long to be favored by their man.

An heir would be a critical issue no matter what pack you were in.

"Maybe because I am not normal... because I am not like other shifter and used to be sick, that’s why the concoction from Grace didn’t work on me... maybe if it’s another woman..." Iris choked in her own words, the thought Cane was laying down with another woman hurt her so bad. She didn’t even want to imagine that.

But the idea of it kept rummaging her mind and make her felt nauseated.

"They will still not get pregnant." The crease between his brows deepened. "The thought of touching another woman that is not you, disgusted me."

Hearing that, Iris cried again, she buried her face against his chest.

This time, Lil Thing stretched its body and moved to put its muzzle on Iris’s lap, the white bear nudged her stomach and Iris caressed its head, while still crying.

Yet, Cane frowned to see this bear changed its position and snuggled to his mate. Its silly face annoyed him, reminding him that the annoying merchant would be here soon.

"Maria sent a letter for Iris, do you want me to give it to her or do you want me to send it to Grace?" Ethan joked around with Cane because he was bored, not because he didn’t have anything to do, but because he had a lot on his plate and didn’t know what to do how to accomplish his tasks, his mind went blank and he looked for Cane to take a break by letting him knew about the letter from Maria.

Cane glanced at the letter in Ethan’s hand, as his gamma sat down in front of him in the study room.

"What she said?" Cane asked casually, he didn’t look very interest to know that.

Ethan shrugged his shoulders. "The gist of it, she is very apologetic for the way she treated her." He then added. "She didn’t include herb in her letter. So, should I give this letter to Grace or Iris?"

Cane used to give all the herbs that Maria sent for Iris to Grace, based on that, Ethan teased his alpha to send the letter to the healer, though it was not funny at all. His mind simply shut down on him because he was overworked.

"Give the letter to Iris." His mate deserved an apology. She didn’t need to accept it, but she should know about it.

"Okay, I will give it to her right away!" Ethan immediately stood up, he looked a little bit cheerful.

"No. Give the letter to the guard, I want you to go to Nolan and give your apology to his beta," Cane said. Alpha Nolan had been making a fuss for what happened yesterday. He wanted Ethan to be punished.

Ethan scrunched his nose when he heard that. "That stupid beta deserved that."

"Go and apologize," Cane said sternly. His gamma was trying to rebel again and he didn’t have time to bicker with him.

Ethan pouted, he crossed his arms in front of his chest to protest. "I heard Iris said she will be so mad at you if you let them punished me. She will also be mad at you if you punished me."

Cane glared at him when his gamma used his mate. "If you listened to my mate more than me, then maybe I should start to find another gamma."

Ethan immediately threw his arms in the air. "Okay, okay, I am just joking! I am just teasing you! Let alone an apology, I am willing to give my heart and soul for you!" he said hastily.

"I don’t need that," Cane replied cruelly.

"You are so mean." Ethan made a face. "I am going to apologize now."

If his gamma thought by utilizing his mate, he could get his way, he was completely wrong. Cane indeed favored Iris, but what he was doing was different matter entirely.

What Ethan was trying to do, though he didn’t have any ill intention, was a gentle reminder that someone would take advantage of his mate because he favored her, just like what alpha Nolan said. He was not wrong in this matter, because that was how it worked.

"Only apologize," Cane emphasized this before Ethan left the room.

The gamma turned around and grinned at him. "Don’t worry, I will give him the sincerest apology that I can do."

His sincere apology was questionable...

Later that day, the entourage from the Riverside pack arrived. There were around four carriage that looked so humble and an extravagance red carriage that hurt your eyes. You didn’t need to guess, who was inside.

"Why it’s you, who greeted me? Where is your alpha?" Lou stared at Dean with dissatisfaction from the window of his carriage. "I am here because of your alpha, he should be here to greet me."

Dean had gotten used to this merchant’s antics when they were in the Howling Wolf pack and worked on the magical device there. "You are here because you asked for the alpha’s help to deal with the royal," he reminded him of this. "The alpha is busy, he has a meeting with alpha Nolan."

Lou was not happy to be reminded of that. Now Alan was the king, he started to regret it that he treated him so bad in the past. That kind of man was holding a grudge very well... and now, he ended up being stuck with Cane because his options were limited.

"Where is your luna?" Lou asked again, this time he genuinely excited.

"Luna Iris is sick," Dean replied almost immediately, as if someone had briefed him.

"Now I am the one, who is sick with that excuse," Lou growled and shut the curtain, as he barked to Sabian to ride ahead.

Inside the carriage, Nala stared at the man in front of him with a frown. She couldn’t understand this merchant’s obsession toward that runt, even when he knew very well he was playing with fire if he did something to Iris, Cane could have his head.

"Why do you like that woman so much?" Nala asked him, she was sitting across from him, wearing only her underwear. "What do you see from her?" She couldn’t understand why important figure like Cane and Lou were infatuated to Iris.

Lou smirked. "That’s none of your business and I want you be close with Aliana."
