Chapter 615: IRIS WAS IN AN EXTREMELY BAD MOOD
Inside, alpha Nolan was seething, what Iris said was an insult for him. pledging his loyalty to Cane?! This woman was sick in the head to even think he would do such thing! However, outside, he was calm and collected. He controlled his facial expression to perfection, until it was so hard to tell what was in his mind.
Especially at time like this, when he had to think rationally and suppressed his emotions. They were in disadvantage, because if the fight really broke out, he would end up being the losing party. Not to mention that he was outnumbered, this pack literally owned by Cane now and it would ruin his long term plan. It didn’t worth it.
Alpha Nolan simply didn’t expect Iris would fight back, she didn’t look like that type of person, more so, as a woman, she shouldn’t have talked back to him. A good woman wouldn’t cause trouble and even though she was a luna, in front of the alpha, she should lower her head and shut her mouth.
It seemed, the way Cane pampered her had gotten her head too big.
Yet, alpha Nolan couldn’t afford a chaos and be in a bad term with Cane. He needed him for his own plan and fighting over what this stupid woman said would jeopardize the whole thing.
"Everyone steps back!" alpha Nolan commanded his warriors and told them to shift back into their human form. He also stood up and glared at his people, whom immediately shifted back and put a distance with the warrior from the Howling Wolf pack.
"Aliana, take Ethan out of the room," Cane said. Ethan could be unpredictable whenever his anger got the best of him and he could fight until he couldn’t once it came to it.
Aliana knew about that as well, she didn’t need to be told twice, as she approached Ethan and took his hand.
The gamma immediately withdrew his claws when Aliana grabbed his hand and dragged him out of the room. He begrudgingly followed her, though his eyes still lingered on the wailing man on the floor, covering his bloody face with his hands.
Dread mixed in the air, as silence befell in this dining hall. Everyone was beside themselves with anger, they were on high alert and it was simply nerve wrecking.
"I will send a healer to see your beta’s wound." Cane nodded at Jax, who kept wailing in agony.
Actually, for the first attack, Cane saw it coming, after all, he knew his gamma so well. He could stop Ethan before he attacked Jax, but he simply deliberately had a late respond, but for the second attack, it was unexpected, yet Cane wouldn’t hold it over Ethan’s head. He did a great job after all. His fighting skills improved whenever he was mad.
"You don’t need to bother with that, Cane. I have my own healer," alpha Nolan rejected the offer politely. "I think your mate has misunderstood my concern. You should tell her to be more careful, because she can cause a lot of trouble in the future with her fiery temper."
"Or maybe you should know when to shut up, Nolan." Cane shut his attempt to put the blame on Iris. "Just like what my mate said, our pack’s affair is none of your business, you don’t have to worry about something that has nothing to do with you."
A killing intent flitted crossed alpha Nolan’s eyes, but it disappeared so fast when he smiled harmlessly. "My bad to overstep your pack’s affair. I used to be your father in law, so I think of you like my own son and want the best for you."
That was the most hypocritical and blatant lie that Cane had ever heard, even his pack member wanted to vomit to hear such righteous words came from his mouth.
What father in law and thought of Cane as his own son? He had never been involved in anything, even when Leana was still alive.
"Cane will be doomed if he has a father like you," Iris muttered under her breath, she still looked upset and there was no trace of fear on her face whatsoever, knowing what might happen if Cane didn’t stop the whole fiasco in time.
Probably Iris talked to herself, but for shifter, her voice was loud enough and they were stunned to hear such bold words came from a woman’s mouth.
However, some of the Howling Wolf pack’s warriors snickered to hear that, as they agreed with her. Having someone like alpha Nolan as Cane’s father was simply ridiculous to imagine it.
Alpha Nolan’s face turned red. He tried to keep his voice even when he spoke, but one could tell that he was barely holding on his last straw of patience. What Iris said really got on his nerves.
"You are not going to say anything about the disrespect your mate showed to me?" Alpha Nolan narrowed his eyes dangerously at Cane.
Meanwhile, Cane was speechless by Iris’s sudden hostile personality. She looked like she was in extremely bad mood, as if there was a dark and gloomy cloud hovered above her head.
Yet, the only thing that Cane said to her was extremely gentle.
"Be good." Cane caressed her earlobe, which made Iris swatted his hand away and glared at him. She looked like she was going to claw him for doing that. But, in Cane’s eyes, his mate was akin to a little kitten, trying to look scary.
Alpha Nolan was extremely dissatisfied. "I have warned you this, Cane. She will bring nothing, but trouble for you, if you don’t discipline her."
Cane smirked when he heard that. "Thanks." And that was the only respond from him, as he ruffled Iris’s hair.
Seeing that the conversation wouldn’t go anywhere, alpha Nolan tried to get control over the situation. "We will talk about the punishment for your gamma for attacking my beta."
And with that parting words, he led his warriors out of the dining hall. Two warriors helped Jax to stand up and they rushed him to see their healer.
However, only three steps, alpha Nolan stopped in his track and clutched his chest. His face contorted, as if he was in so much pain. The agony only lasted for a second, but it was enough to almost knock him off to his knees.
"What happened, alpha?" One of the warriors realized it and asked with worried.
"No, nothing." Alpha Nolan shook his head, the pain had disappeared, but he was sure that acute pain was there a moment ago.
Still in confusion, he continued to walk away.
Once all the people from the Winter Moon pack had left the room, the tension dropped and the warriors chatted with each other, begrudgingly cursing alpha Nolan and his people for their provocation.
"Iris..." Cane called her name with helpless tone, he saw that and immediately knew it was his mate, who was the cause of alpha Nolan’s sudden pain. "Don’t."
"I will make him in so much pain if he punished Ethan," Iris grumbled. Her small face scrunched in annoyance and then her blue eyes fixed on Cane. "I will be so angry if you punished Ethan."
"And then? What are you going to do if you are angry with me?" Cane lifted his brows. Somehow, the way Iris acted out was very out of character of her.
"I..." Iris tried to think hard. "I..." She didn’t know what she would do, which sounded like a threat, but she didn’t want to threaten him. "I will not talk with you." Her voice sounded unsure and she immediately stood up and rushed out of the dining hall.
Cane followed her out, but he didn’t try to catch up with her, he let her to calm herself down, she was being too emotional for no reason.
The alpha followed his mate’s scent and he ended up at the garden, where he found Iris was crouching down next to the sleeping white bear. He waved his hand to dismiss the seven warriors with her.
"You almost caused a bloody conflict, Iris. You know that?"
"I know," Iris mumbled curtly, while caressing Lil Thing’s muzzle.
Cane stood behind Iris, but there was something off about his mate, thus he approached her.
"What happened?" Cane crouched down next to her and watch her crying. She was so angry a moment ago, but now she was crying? He really couldn’t understand it her sudden change of mood.
Iris wiped her tears harshly, which made her face turned so red. Cane caught her hands and wiped them for her gently.
"Something is bothering you?"
"I am upset," Iris sobbed.
"If you are upset, why are you crying?" Cane put his finger under her chin to lift her head up, her eyes were so red, as she bit her lip. She indeed was very upset. "Why are you crying?"
There were a lot of things that made Iris was very upset, she could talk about it for seven days and seven nights, but the only answer that came out of her mouth was; "I don’t know."
Cane raised his brows. Confused. Between the two of them, it would be Iris, who would have a better communication about what she felt and thought, but now, she didn’t even know why she was upset and was crying.
"I don’t know," Iris sniffled, she shook her head and then snuggled against his chest, continued to cry. She wrapped her arms around his waist. She felt queasy. "I don’t like him. He is annoying."
"I can’t agree more."
