Chapter 309: AN EARTH- SHATTERING SCREAM
Cane gave Aria a quick and easy death, because in a way she didn’t mean to harm the others intentionally. It was a lapse of judgment and how blinded she was by her own desire that caused her own demise.
But, Mason was still alive, as were a few nasty people from the Blue Moon pack, as they constantly begged to be killed, instead to live their lives.
Cane was someone who thought death was too easy of a punishment to be paid for people’s crimes, they needed to live and beg for death instead.
Death was only one way and a quick torture before everything ended, but life... Cane could think of a thousand ways to make one dread living with every breath they took.
If there was one thing that he learned from his slavery, it was; death was an escape for people to leave their misery behind.
Therefore, how could he let his enemy escape so easily?
"I agree with you," Prince Kellan said, nodding in satisfaction. "I am glad you stood by me like your father did. Your father will be proud of you."
Cane nodded. "I hope he is proud of me."
"If there is anything you need, just tell me. I will help you with anything, as long as I can."
"I heard the rumors of my father wanting to appoint you as his right hand man and it seems with you attending the meeting earlier, it will show to the people how true the rumor is."
"It’s too early to draw a conclusion." And when Cane saw Prince Kellan was about to extend the conversation, he politely resigned himself. "I need to see my mate, she is still sick. I will take my leave."
It was already a great feat for Cane to be able to hold back his emotions and press down his killing intent before Prince Kellan. It helped with the fact they didn’t meet for a few days after Iris’ last breakdown and left the orphanage, because it gave Cane some time to organize his thoughts.
He was reckless with the matter with Will and Princess Osana, as he hastened his plan out of impulse, thankfully, there was no hiccup in the plan.
However, he couldn’t do that with Prince Kellan, especially when he had the citizens behind his back. He was a useful piece on his chess board. It was not the right time to get rid of him.
Cane couldn’t let his emotions get the better of him, especially in this critical situation, when he was on the right track of his game. One wrong move and it would ruin everything.
"Oh, right. I hope for her speedy recovery." Prince Kellan’s eyes looked sad and all Cane thought was how to gouge his eyes out of their sockets. "I have sent some herbs for her, I think they have been delivered to your bedroom."
Cane simply thanked him curtly and then left.
Fortunately, he usually acted this way, thus it didn’t raise any suspicion from Prince Kellan. Moreover, the Prince had seen with his own eyes how Cane had stayed for two whole days and nights when Iris’ allergy flared up.
Therefore, the way Cane acted right now was nothing unusual.
"Ah, that girl... she used to be a sweet and docile little girl..." Prince Kellan lamented after Cane walked away from there and gestured for the warrior to push the wheelchair away.
It was lunchtime and the weather was slightly warm, as the snow started to melt, an indication that the winter would pass soon.
Many people had put away their thick cloaks and started wearing more simpler clothes, but Iris was still sleeping with a thick blanket covering her body and fire active in the fireplace.
The room was always very warm, thus when Cane stepped in, he took off his cloak and only retained his tunic, as he approached the bed.
Hanna was sitting next to Iris, holding her hand with swollen eyes.
"You can leave," Cane said and his eyes fell on a green pouch on the table. "Is that from Prince Kellan?"
Hanna stood up and nodded. She gave her place to the Alpha. "A little girl from Prince Kellan’s palace came by and gave the herbs to Miss Iris."
Cane said nothing, as he took the pouch and tossed it into the fire. "Next time, throw everything that came from him. Understood?"
Hanna nodded hastily, she could feel the enmity exuding from his body. It was so scary. "Yes, Alpha." She immediately walked out of the bedroom, but before that, she glanced over her shoulder and saw Cane checking on Iris.
For some reason, the Alpha became very hostile toward Prince Kellan, though he didn’t express it when the Prince was around. She assumed the reason for the Alpha to be so enraged the other day had something to do with the Prince.
Hanna didn’t know what the problem was, but she was glad the Alpha was no longer angry with her missy. She watched how Cane held Iris for hours when she had a breakdown when they were still in the orphanage. He was very gentle and caring with her and this made Hanna feel so relieved. The way he looked at her could convince you that he wouldn’t hurt a single strand of her hair intentionally.
Hanna then walked out of the bedroom, leaving the two of them alone.
Once Hanna left, Cane held Iris’ hand with both hands and brought it to his forehead, as he held it firmly and closed his eyes.
It had been so long since his last prayer, but if he could ask for one thing, he wanted her to no longer wallow in misery.
It took another four days before Iris finally woke up and she found herself alone in the bedroom, while Cane was right outside, behind the door, as he talked with Ethan about something.
It was dark outside, but the luminous pearls around the room helped to chase away the darkness significantly.
Iris felt her head ache so badly, as she tried to sit down when a wave of emotions hit her so hard as the memories flooded her mind.
It almost felt like a dam had been broken and water drowned her, suffocating her, as flashes of memories came to the surface.
The exact memories she had blocked for years. Iris thought she no longer remembered them and yet, there they were, creeping back to her mind all at once.
She remembered how he helped her to undress herself and said; we are playing a new game now. Don’t tell anyone. This will be our secret.
She remembered how he also took off his clothes and pants, smiling gently at her, as her younger self looked at him with confusion, afraid to look at his naked body.
That was the first time for Iris to see a man being naked in front of her and she was so afraid.
’Come here, touch me here. I know you are curious, right?’
Iris let out an earth- shattering scream, as she hit her head with her fists, trying to get the image out of her head.
