Chapter 304: IN MY DREAM
Chapter 304: IN MY DREAM
Apparently, what Cane said to Lou seemed to have left the merchant with a lot to think about. He immediately went back to the palace to think over the matter thoroughly. He didn’t join them for dinner.
It was not like his presence was expected either, thus no one asked why he was not there.
As such, the dinner proceeded in the dining room just like the last time, with no change in their sitting positions whatsoever, as Cane sat on Prince Kellan’s right side while Iris settled beside him.
From the corner of his eye, he could see how uncomfortable Iris was to be close to the Prince. She looked like she was going to flee at any moment, yet Cane did nothing. His eyes flickered with a complicated look.
He had been trying to figure out what was wrong with Iris, at the same time digging deeper into Prince Kellan, yet he found nothing suspicious aside from the incident ten years ago when he was dethroned as the Crown Prince. Aside from that, his image had always been impeccable.
"I am so glad to see you have recovered well!" Prince Kellan said cheerfully, he was smiling at Iris and she was left with no other choice, but to look back at him, since it was not polite to ignore the Prince. "How are you feeling now?"
"Thank you, Prince Kellan, for your concern, I am feeling better now," Iris said softly, as she held Cane’s hand tightly, as if she was holding onto her dear life.
"I am glad. Alpha Cane was very worried about you." Prince Kellan slid a huge chunk of meat onto her plate, which was supposed to be an honor to Iris, but she felt sick just at the sight of the meat. "Here, eat more. You need to gain your energy back."
"Thank you, Prince Kellan."
"I should apologize to you, after all, I forgot that you are allergic to strawberries," Prince Kellan said and then he laughed merrily to see the confused look on Iris’ expression. "I have told you before, we were rather close when you were little, unfortunately, you don’t remember it."
Cane glanced at his mate, who just lowered her head and said nothing.
Iris ended up nibbling the meat, but after a few bites, she felt sick to her stomach and whispered to Cane that she needed to go to the bathroom.
"Ask Redmond to go with you," Cane said.
Redmond just arrived this evening to give him a report and also because he wanted to see Iris. The warrior even made a fuss saying he was being separated from his master and made to work under Cane’s order. He was pissed to run errands for the Alpha, though he did his job well.
Currently, he was stuffing his mouth, while arguing with Ethan at the table in the corner. He wouldn’t even notice if Iris went out of the room at this point.
"Okay," Iris replied and excused herself.
Thankfully, Redmond saw her stand up, as her red hair caught his attention. He followed Iris out of the dining room, cursing at the Gamma for whatever argumentation they had.
Meanwhile, the poor little children around their table had moved far away from them, afraid of the two men.
Outside the dining room, Iris couldn’t hold it back any longer, as she vomited under the tree and Redmond immediately came to approach her.
"What happened to you? I heard you were sick, didn’t the healer tell you whether or not you are pregnant?" Redmond massaged her back, he kept nagging at her, though she couldn’t read what he was saying. "You can’t be so reckless with your health, you know."
One of the reasons why he insisted on coming here was because he needed to talk to Cane, since he didn’t get any chance to talk with him about Iris until then.
"How can you be so sick like this?"
Yet, Iris kept vomiting everything she had eaten. The last thing she needed was being nagged at, thankfully, she didn’t have any idea what Redmond was talking about.
"The healer that treated you must be a quack! How can you still be sick?" Redmond clicked his tongue in annoyance, but he didn’t leave her alone there and kept massaging her back.
"Get a wet towel and a glass of warm water."
Redmond whipped his head around when he heard the voice and realized someone was coming closer toward them. It was Cane. He left the dining room to check on his mate, because he could see how pale she was.
From the looks of it, he couldn’t continue with this method. Iris would be really sick before he could find any clue.
"Move!" Cane snapped at Redmond, who didn’t budge from his position.
Being left with no other option, the warrior left to get the things the Alpha ordered him to, while Iris was even more mortified to see Cane was there.
It would be the second time he saw her in this condition and she didn’t want him here. Yet, she couldn’t stop herself, as she emptied her stomach. Her head was throbbing painfully.
On the other hand, Redmond returned as fast as he could and Cane grabbed the towel first, as he cleaned Iris’ mouth and then handed her the water to rinse her mouth.
When he was sure Iris had stopped retching, he carried her in his arms after he gave the towel and glass to Redmond. "Bring a bowl of congee."
Redmond blinked his eyes when he heard the order, but after Cane had taken Iris away, he grumbled to himself. "I am not a servant, okay?!"
Still, he did what Cane told him to do.
That night, Iris didn’t come down with a fever, but she had a nightmare and would wake up every now and then, only to find Cane holding her closely. He didn’t sleep and the room was so bright, since he knew how afraid she was of the dark.
But before the sunrise, when Iris woke up again from her nightmare, Cane tried to talk with her.
"What have you been dreaming of?" Cane held her so close, as he ran his fingers through her hair. His expression didn’t betray his emotions.
He could see how uncomfortable Iris felt around Prince Kellan, but in the last two meetings, her reaction was very intense, though he couldn’t say the same about the first one, since her allergy flared up.
"You kept saying; don’t tell anyone."
Iris’ body stiffened in Cane’s arms when he mentioned that and he knew immediately something had gone wrong between Iris and Prince Kellan.
He could see how she was having a hard time breathing properly, thus he didn’t press the matter, but he wouldn’t let it go either, Cane would wait for her to tell him on her own.
It took a little bit longer for Iris to find her voice. "I... I dreamed of Prince Kellan, he used to spend time with me when I was little. I remembered how happy I was when there was finally someone to play with me... but, when I woke up, I felt this dreadful feeling." Her next words came out as a whisper. "I am afraid of him..."
"Why?"
Iris shook her head, tears welled up in her eyes. "I stood... In my dream, I stood naked."
