Chapter 1639: Chapter 1637: Ivy Cooper Seeks a Visit
After his talk with Henry Carter, Peter Brown returned to his room and, after some thought, decided to call Leah Nelson.
"Manager Walter, what made you think to call me?" Leah Nelson asked with a playful tone, starting a joke.
Peter laughed and said, "You actually know I got promoted!"
Leah Nelson laughed, "How could I not? You’re quite the celebrity now. There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t know you. You’ve become very popular. This time, because of your exceptional performance, Mr. Armstrong from the Group personally nominated you to be the deputy manager of our branch, specifically in charge of technology. How about that? You should take care of your old subordinate, shouldn’t you?"
Peter shook his head. It seemed this news had spread early on.
"I’m calling to talk to you about something."
"Go ahead."
Leah Nelson felt smug in her heart, having clung to this ’big leg’ back when others weren’t optimistic about Peter. Now that Peter was soaring high, it was naturally good news for her.
At this time, Imogan Jones wasn’t in the office. Leah glanced at Azrael Richardson’s office and thought that with so many things happening in the company, Imogan must be anxious and probably went to find Azrael.
"It’s like this, I’ve exchanged some views with Mr. Carter, and I intend for you to take the position of Deputy Director of the Integrated Office. You should be prepared for this," said Peter.
"What?" Leah suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of happiness. She really hadn’t expected to be promoted to deputy director so suddenly.
In an instant, Leah knew it was all because of Peter. If it weren’t for Peter’s support, how could Henry Carter agree to her promotion?
She was a smart person and knew that Peter’s phone call was to gauge her attitude. If she remained as before, this opportunity might slip away.
Leah adjusted her posture, as if Peter was right in front of her, and then she adjusted her tone, speaking with gratitude, "Boss, I know all of this is thanks to your help. Rest assured, I am fully aware of who has been good to me. From now on, I’ll hit wherever you point, and I’ll do whatever you ask."
As she spoke, Leah felt a pang of shyness, thinking that her words could well be misunderstood. What if Peter wanted her to be his woman?
Then again, she thought, with someone like Peter, even if she were to marry him, what could be the harm? He was a golden son-in-law after all. She feared that he might not have regard for her anymore. Yet even if she couldn’t marry him, being his mistress wasn’t a big deal. Peter was still so handsome. These thoughts led her to feel a strong sensation, reaching a climax instantly.
Her mind became somewhat chaotic, and Leah reminisced about dancing with Peter, regretting her modesty. If only she knew how quickly Peter would rise, she should have made her move earlier, and it might have led to talks of marriage.
Peter, unaware of the multitude of thoughts running through her mind upon hearing Leah’s understanding, smiled, "Okay, I just wanted to let you know about this. Just be aware."
After hanging up, Peter sat there pondering deeply, thinking that from now on he was starting to build his own team. Although it was a small team with little power, it was nonetheless a good start.
Somehow, Peter’s thoughts drifted to Ivy Cooper.
Thinking of Ivy, Peter also felt a tinge of guilt. Although she was not quite competent at work, he had, in this instance, inadvertently caused her misfortune, and he wondered how she was doing.
Just as Peter was contemplating Ivy, he never expected that Ivy herself would call him.
As soon as the call connected, Ivy burst into tears, "Manager Walter, you were my old boss. You have to help me with my current situation."
Peter Brown was baffled when he heard the other party speak so incoherently. He asked right away, "Ivy, what’s wrong?"
"Manager Walter, you know me well, so I’ll just swallow the embarrassment and lay out my situation. I’m really struggling now, and you know how tough it is at home. I was forced into that situation; I didn’t want it to happen."
Peter knew the full story between the two of them better than anyone. Hearing this woman trying to cajole him again, he said directly, "Just tell me what it is you need."
Ivy Cooper said, "I want to go back to work, but I don’t know if I can."
Peter paused for a moment before asking, "Your leg’s healed?"
"Without a job, there’s no income. I have to work whether I’m well or not. I can manage with crutches."
After thinking it over, Peter now didn’t fear this woman anymore; after all, the gap between them had widened. Considering he had played a part in her current plight, he felt a bit uneasy not offering her some help.
"Everyone in the company knows about your situation. Aren’t you afraid of what they’ll say if you come back?"
"I can’t even make ends meet, who’s afraid of gossip? As long as the company allows me to work, I’m not afraid of anything."
This woman!
Peter shook his head in disbelief, understanding that if Ivy Cooper really did return to work here, she would indeed face immense pressure.
"How about this, let the issue of returning to work wait for now. The team has just been rearranged, and once the company is running smoothly and your injuries are better, we’ll talk."
"Manager Walter, I’m begging you, I really can’t go on like this. My case wasn’t a work injury. If I don’t work, the company is likely to dismiss me. I just want to start working as soon as possible."
At this point, Ivy Cooper started crying again and said, "Now nobody will even give me the time of day, you’re the only one I can turn to, Manager Walter. Rest assured, as long as you help me, I’ll do whatever you ask, even if it means being your mistress!"
Ah!
Peter really hadn’t expected this woman to say such things; he was shocked and realized she must have been truly desperate.
Never mind, he thought, I’ll help her this one time. As for the mistress business, that would be too dangerous; better to stay as far away from her as possible.
"Here’s what we’ll do, I’ll discuss it with Mr. Carter and then call you back. How does that sound?"
"Manager Walter, you are too kind to me. I will definitely repay you."
After hanging up, Peter shook his head. He reckoned this woman probably wasn’t having an easy time. After what had happened, her own family probably wanted nothing to do with her.
One misstep leads to another; that’s human life for you.
However, Peter was also aware that if it hadn’t been for him stepping in, this woman could very well be the current Director of the Integrated Office. It was just her bad luck to have encountered him, her misfortune.
Well, I’ll help her this one time.
