Chapter 1614: Chapter 1613: Help
A few days had passed, and the branch office wasn’t too busy. Everyone was waiting for Rylan Williams to arrive. Even Henry Carter came back. He didn’t spend much time at work each day, coming in now and then, and no one knew what he was busy with all day long. The rumors from Leah Nelson indicated that he was trying to arrange a transfer out.
"Mr. Carter, the self-study examination is tomorrow, and I need to go to the city to take it. I would like to request two days off," Peter Brown said, as he approached Henry Carter’s office.
With a smile on his face, Henry Carter asked, "How is the self-study examination arranged?"
"In our province, it’s held four times a year, each session is on a Saturday and Sunday, covering four subjects each time."
"How many subjects are you taking?"
"Fifteen subjects."
"Ah, taking self-study exams isn’t easy! But, you know, to work here, you need a diploma. Study well. There isn’t much going on recently, so it’s okay to take a few more days. Go ahead."
Henry Carter didn’t have much interest in his current work anymore, so he agreed to Peter Brown’s leave request.
After agreeing to the leave, Henry Carter thought for a moment and said, "Actually, you don’t have to start from the Associate’s degree."
Peter obviously confused, asked, "How would that work?"
Henry Carter smiled and said, "Provincial University has a pilot program. I heard it from a classmate of mine. Let me ask about it for you."
During the conversation, he picked up his cell phone and called someone, explaining Peter Brown’s situation.
After the call, he smiled and said, "My classmate is a faculty member at Provincial University and is in charge of the self-study examinations. Being a pilot project, they are trying to get students enrolled to boost their results. You can directly enroll for the Bachelor’s degree at their school. Even though you don’t have the Associate’s degree, it’s not a problem for them. As long as you pass the undergraduate content, they can issue a diploma for the Associate’s Degree as well and, most importantly, you can get the certificate within a year and it’s nationally recognized. What you lack now is just this diploma; it might be worth trying."
"But isn’t the exam tomorrow?"
"No worries, they are Provincial University, and it’s a pilot project so they’ve postponed the exam. You still have time to register, you can go take the exam next week."
Peter Brown scratched his head, surprised by such an opportunity.
Henry Carter assured him, "Don’t worry, my old classmate will help arrange it. As long as you do well enough, you’ll securely get your Bachelor’s degree within a year."
"Okay, I’ll go register then."
"Yes, just go to the provincial capital tomorrow. They are working overtime; just go and register, and pay the fees. It should be around six to seven thousand, but you can afford it, haha."
"Is the study major related to our field?"
"Of course, don’t worry, it’s related to our field."
"Thank you for your help then."
"What’s there to thank! Ah, Peter, having a diploma is good. Even if you lose your current job, it will make finding another job easier later on."
Henry Carter looked meaningfully at Peter Brown.
Peter Brown smiled and said, "A friend of mine spoke for me at the headquarters, so there shouldn’t be any big issues."
Henry Carter looked at Peter Brown, pondering that rumors about Peter’s connections in the provincial capital were true. If he came through this safely, it would be good to further nourish this relationship.
Upon having this thought, Henry Carter said, "Well, I have to go to the headquarters for some work anyway, so let’s leave tonight. I’ll take you to the provincial capital, and with me helping you register, things will be simpler."
"Mr. Carter, thank you so much."
Back in his office, Peter Brown pondered over Henry Carter’s help, the more he thought about it, the more it seemed like a viable option. To him, getting a Bachelor’s degree was the crucial step. No matter where he got it from, having a Bachelor’s degree would enable him to pursue other tough qualifications.
"Director, weren’t you going to take an exam tomorrow, and you are leaving today? Did you just request a leave?" Leah Nelson asked.
"I went to request leave, but Mr. Carter informed me that Provincial University has an accelerated self-study program. He suggested I register there instead."
Leah Nelson quickly searched on her computer and said, "It’s true. Provincial University is among the first batch of pilot self-study comprehensive reform institutions approved by the National Education Department and the provincial self-study committee. The college was tasked with the main examination responsibilities for thirteen pilot Bachelor’s subjects, and the graduation diplomas are jointly issued by the institution and the provincial self-study committee and are recognized nationally. They offer the same treatment as full-time university graduates."
Imogan Jones said, "As long as it’s recognized by the nation, it’s worth a try."
Having confirmed the information, Peter Brown felt more reassured and said, "Okay, I’ll give it a shot."
After work, Peter Brown received a call from Henry Carter, followed by Henry personally driving Peter towards the provincial capital.
"Peter, you should also learn to drive. Being an office director and not being able to drive won’t do," Henry teased.
"Mr. Carter, I’m already learning," Peter replied.
"Good, having more skills is always better. Peter, stop calling me Mr. Carter. I’m a few years older than you, just call me Dexter."
"Alright, I’ll call you Dexter."
Dexter laughed and said, "That’s right. You know, Dexter might be leaving this branch soon. Be a bit more cautious on your own."
Seeing how familiar Henry Carter was suddenly being with him, Peter mulled over it and felt that Henry wouldn’t act so amicable without reason. Between accommodating his trip to the provincial capital and sharing personal thoughts, there must be something Peter wasn’t aware of. After some thought, Peter concluded the most likely reason was that Henry suspected he had connections in the provincial government.
After thinking for a while, Peter decided not to dwell on it further; for him, no harm was being done.
The two chatted while driving until they arrived at the provincial capital.
After getting a room, Henry said, "I have some errands to run, and I won’t be back tonight. I’ll come and pick you up in the morning." With that, he hastily left.
Peter Brown thought for a moment and decided not to contact Reid Nelson. After all, he didn’t want to get too involved in the company’s affairs. He just turned on his computer and accessed the mobile game company’s system via his own programs. He reviewed the company’s updates on his computer for a while and nodded to himself. Reid Nelson was indeed treating the mobile game company’s project as a significant affair. Staff recruitment was underway, and various equipment was being purchased. Everything was proceeding on track, and there didn’t seem to be any problems.
Peter even saw Reid bustling about in the office through the computer’s webcam.
