Chapter 1613: Chapter 1612: Not Favored
The next day at work, Peter Brown noticed that everyone’s attitude had continued to evolve in a direction unfavorable to him.
Although they had all gone out to eat and sing the previous night, today they merely nodded as they passed by him, and no one visited him early in the morning.
"Director, you made so much money, what do you plan to do with it?" Leah Nelson had grown somewhat closer to Peter Brown after the events of last night.
"Where did I make any money?"
Peter Brown shook his head.
Imogan Jones then laughed, "We’ve all heard that after two lucky finds, you have a total of 2 million dollars. That’s a lot of money. In this County Town, you’re considered wealthy."
"Exactly, you spent 300,000 on a house, and with the furniture and all, most likely 500,000 gone, you still have 1.5 million left. That’s no small sum, you could even stop working if you wanted."
Leah Nelson’s eyes lit up as she talked about this.
Smiling, Peter Brown of course would not reveal the real situation to them.
After chatting about some trifles, Azrael Richardson, the Deputy Manager, came out and said to Imogan Jones, "Imogan, come with me to the county office."
Imogan Jones turned to Peter Brown and said, "Director, I’ll go run the errand."
Peter Brown nodded.
Watching the two leave, Leah Nelson whispered, "Director, did you notice anyhting?"
Peter Brown picked up his teacup and took a sip.
Seeing Peter Brown’s reaction, Leah Nelson said, "Since last night, Imogan has been getting very close to Manager Harrison. You should be careful."
Peter Brown pretended not to understand, "What happened?"
Leah Nelson then seriously said, "It’s been widely spread around that Mr. Williams has strong backing. He doesn’t have a big problem and will be back at work soon. When he returns, your position might be at risk."
"Oh, it’s being talked about everywhere?"
"Of course, even my former team knows about it. The team leader even called to ask about office matters. You don’t know, everyone thinks you won’t last long in your position."
Peter Brown smiled and said, "Whichever leader takes charge, a few capable people are always needed, right?"
Leah Nelson then burst out somewhat coquettishly, "You really are something. Don’t you understand? They say that Mr. Williams plans to promote Ivy Cooper. Now, Ivy’s chances might be slim, but all the deputy managers still need their own people, don’t they?"
"Wow, Leah, I hadn’t realized you know so much!"
Peter Brown saw Leah Nelson in a new light.
Leah Nelson laughed, "It’s obvious, anyone can see it, I don’t believe you can’t."
As she spoke, she looked toward Peter Brown.
After a while, Leah Nelson glanced toward the door and said, "Imogan is very scheming. I noticed last night she intentionally tried to ingratiate herself with Manager Harrison and asked him to dance several times."
When talking about dancing, Leah Nelson’s face became slightly warm. She couldn’t help but think of her ambiguous moments with Peter Brown.
"Why would she seek out Manager Harrison instead of Mr. Carter?" asked Peter Brown.
Leah Nelson laughed and said, "Mr. Carter thought he was going to take over the position these few days Mr. Williams was away, jumped too eagerly into things. Do you think Mr. Williams doesn’t know? With Mr. Williams’ backing, Mr. Carter might find it difficult to hold onto his position. Just you watch, Mr. Carter might get transferred, which is also why everyone is even more convinced that you can’t hold onto your position."
This girl, perhaps emboldened by their flirtation the night before, dared to speak out about this.
Of course, Peter Brown also guessed that Leah Nelson, seeing his money, reckoned it didn’t matter if he lost his job—that’s why she decided to show favor, possibly even contemplating a romantic relationship.
This beauty was also a schemer; it’s just that while Imogan Jones had set her sights on Azrael Richardson, Leah Nelson was more interested in Peter Brown’s wealth.
Peter Brown now saw these matters more clearly, and his brain churned through the two women’s motivations.
However, Peter Brown wouldn’t show that he saw through these things; he asked, "Do you think Manager Harrison has a chance?"
"Whether he has a chance or not doesn’t matter. The most important thing is that Manager Harrison has always been composed during this affair, and he hasn’t gotten involved. Even if Mr. Williams comes back, he will need people to get things done, and Manager Harrison is such a person."
Peter Brown then praised her, "You are awesome, even understanding that."
Leah Nelson appeared somewhat proud, "Of course, you just need to think carefully about these office matters, there’s nothing you can’t understand. If Mr. Carter leaves and you are brought down too, and Ivy isn’t coming to work, even if she does, Mr. Williams can’t promote her quickly. He’ll need some leadership support, right? That’s what Imogan is aiming for. Manager Harrison would be a very important vote, at least Imogan won’t be affected by the position changes. If Manager Harrison insists on helping Imogan, maybe she could rise up a bit."
As the beauty explained these matters, Peter Brown realized they really might evolve in the direction she described.
"What about you?" Peter Brown then looked at Leah Nelson.
"I wouldn’t do those things. Anyway, I don’t have any connections, I’m just sticking to you. If I lose my job, you have to take me in," she said, looking up at Peter Brown.
At that moment, Peter Brown’s heart pounded within him; he had discerned her romantic intentions.
However, Peter Brown didn’t fully understand Leah Nelson—her personality and all—so he was not about to make any easy promises. Having dealt with both Reid Nelson and Ivy Cooper, he was somewhat wary of these beauties and said, "Alright, if we both lose our jobs, then let’s start a business together."
Peter Brown’s words came with a condition, only if they both became unemployed.
He was confident about keeping his position now, having even called Rylan Williams the previous night to report on some office matters. From that conversation, it was clear that Rylan Williams’ attitude toward him had changed significantly.
Though Leah Nelson hadn’t received a straight promise from Peter Brown, she liked this kind of response even more. She looked again and again at Peter Brown, thinking he might just have the confidence to turn things around. Showing a close relationship with him now might even benefit her in some way.
Even if Peter Brown really lost, having 2 million dollars meant he was wealthy; marrying him wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
After speaking for a while, Leah Nelson left the office to visit others.
