Chapter 1562: Chapter 1561: Speaking Out_1
"I come here often. It’s really nice, just a bit on the cheaper side since it’s a small hot pot, simple but good. How about it?"
"I’ll follow Reid’s lead."
Peter didn’t really care. Today, Reid Nelson’s behavior had ignited a certain eagerness in him. After all, it had been a while since he last did this.
Reid Nelson was clearly very familiar with the place. After ordering the food, she also ordered some wine for Peter and said, "The wine-makings here are said to be good. You’ll be an office person from now on, so you won’t be able to escape hosting duties. I want to see how much you can drink."
Peter just smiled and said, "It seems Sister Reid has quite the tolerance."
Reid chuckled and said, "How could anyone in our line of work not have a good tolerance? Imagine getting drunk and being taken advantage of without even realizing it." While saying this, she gave Peter a teasing look, which stirred something within him.
However, Peter had seen too many such scenes, and while it did stir him momentarily, he didn’t take it too seriously. He knew that truth from women in the workplace was rare, and with Reid acting this way today, it was clear she was trying to seduce him. He was curious to see how she would play her game.
Peter was well aware of his status. He was in a completely different league from Reid Nelson; there was no way she was truly interested in him.
Pretending to be oblivious, Peter let a hint of lust show in his eyes.
Once the hot pot arrived, Peter’s appetite surged at the sight of the steaming dish.
"This is a specially prepared ingredient mix, said to nourish the yin and bolster the yang, young man. Be careful or you might get overly fired up."
With that remark, Reid burst into loud laughter.
The two were alone in a small private room, undisturbed by others.
Seeing Reid abandon her office composure and laugh without restraint, even her chest visibly trembling with each chuckle, Peter wondered what her true nature was really like.
"Sister Reid, let me toast to you," Peter said as he raised his glass.
Reid clinked her glass against his.
Peter suddenly remembered something he read in a book about how to toast with a superior – you should keep your glass lower – and deliberately dipped his glass a little.
After clinking glasses, Reid glanced at Peter’s and raised her estimation of him. She thought this kid wasn’t entirely clueless, noticing he was aware of the etiquette of toasting.
"Let’s drink up. I want to check your tolerance today. You better not disappoint," Reid declared.
Having said that, Reid downed the wine in her glass.
Peter had no choice but to drink his wine as well.
"Not bad at all," Reid praised. "Looks like you’ve got a decent tolerance. Let’s drink and eat."
She then ladled a bowl of soup for Peter, saying, "This soup is very nutritious. Have a bowl first."
Peter took it and started drinking. Indeed, the soup tasted medicinal and was quite delicious.
"How is it? Good, right?"
"Really good."
"Peter, what’s your family’s situation like? Tell Reid about it."
Peter then roughly outlined his family’s background. After all, it wasn’t something that needed to be kept secret.
After listening quietly, Reid raised her glass to Peter, and after they both drank their wine, she said, "It’s not easy for us rural people to make it out. In my family, I was the one good at school, and my mother withstood the pressure to get me through college. It drained our savings, but fortunately, once I started working, I sent money back constantly and only recently things have started to get better for us."
Peter nodded and replied, "Indeed, it’s really hard for rural folks to have a good development in the city."
"So, Peter, we two are natural allies. Even though you’re just a temporary worker for now, becoming a permanent employee is just a word away from Edward Ford. He really does look out for us; you could get converted to a permanent position anytime and your promotions won’t be slow either."
If it were any other young person, they might have spilled all their secrets to Reid with her approach, but Peter just smiled and said, "My uncle is close with Edward Ford. Everyone knows this."
"Peter, be honest with me, what exactly is the relationship between your family and the Fords? With your uncle’s influence, Edward wouldn’t look at you kindly for no reason."
A few drinks in, Reid asked this seemingly seriously.
Peter made a wry face and said, "How would I know? Haven’t you seen? I’m in the office all day and hardly interact with Edward Ford. Maybe it’s just because he respects my uncle."
Reid gave Peter a look and laughed, "Well, it’s a good thing anyway. Let’s drink."
They drank another glass.
"Peter, what’s your take on the situation between Christian Greenhill, Ivy Cooper, and Edward Ford?"
"You’re putting me in a tough spot, Reid. What can I say? It’s all between the leaders, and my own position is too low to even start understanding the situation, let alone study it. If you hadn’t told me about some of these relationships, I’d be even more in the dark. But there’s one thing I agree with: if something happens to Edward Ford, I think it’s very likely I would be let go."
Reid was satisfied with Peter’s response and said, "Something unexpected happened this time, and I don’t know what measures Edward Ford took, but he managed to cover up his issues right away. Christian and Ivy came back empty-handed this time, but this is not the end, I’ve heard. Rumor has it Ivy Cooper has some connection with a bigwig at the head office, and she’s bound to take some action under these circumstances."
"If anything comes up, I’ll report it to you, Reid. With your protection, I’ll be okay," Peter replied.
Reid laughed and said, "I’ve been open-hearted towards you, wishing I could take out my heart for you to see, and yet you’re not being frank with me."
With a flushed face, Peter said, "Reid, I really don’t know much, but I’ll ask my uncle and see if he knows anything."
"I’ve heard your uncle took a knife for Edward Ford before; their relationship is really solid. It’s worth checking out. If you manage to climb up, it would also give me more leverage. If you ever need help, just tell me, and I’m sure Reid will be there for you."
"I understand, Sister Reid. By the way, I saw Christian Greenhill today."
Peter knew he had to divulge something concrete for her to trust him, so he retold the incident of Christian stepping out of the office to make a call to Reid.
Reid listened attentively and then scoffed, "No wonder Ivy Cooper seemed so composed. It turns out she’s got Mr. Spencer supporting her from behind!"
