Chapter 42: Clean Up
Chapter 42: Clean Up
"But why must the council dispatch these Mecha-men in our academy? It’s annoying. They never trust us, like we teachers are posing a threat to them," Hunter complained bitterly as they packed chips of broken helmets to one side.
"That’s because we are doing things that makes them suspicious of us. Isn’t it obvious?" Allan replied more bitterly. He was still clutching his wounded leg.
"If you fight half as much as you talk, you would have become an Avenger by now," Hunter replied heatedly.
"Now that one was personal, Hunter. That’s a good one, won’t lie," Omal said laughing.
"Everybody be neglecting the truth," Allan said in low tone.
"Let it go for now, Allan. Voice out your discomfort when the kids are gone," Omal warned.
"Hey, you," Omal said to Rosa, "come use your quirk and pack these dirty metals together. Should you watch your teachers do this kind of dirty work?"
Hunter was signalling to Omal to stop but he wasn’t noticing. Rosa stared at Omal for a while but later decided to do as instructed.
By just thinking of it, the metal parts started flying high in the air from different angles. Rosa’s gaze was lazy as she worked, like she wasn’t the one doing all that. After the whole metal scraps was now in the air, she clapped her palms together and they all joined together to form a ball of metals, solid and firm.
Slowly, she dropped it on the soft floor and dusted her hands as if she handpicked them.
"I know. I know. I have a cool quirk," she said when she noticed that Leo and the others are watching her.
By that time, Hunter was done whispering to Omal, and only then did Omal understand what Hunter told him. The girl is a Morningbolt, and he had just made her do a dirty job for him. Everyone wants to get on the good side of every Morningbolt so they are always given a nicer treatment than to other students from lesser families.
"Erm...I shouldn’t have told you to pack those. Are you okay by the way?" Omal asked, suddenly concerned.
"Why? Because I’m a Morningbolt? Gosh, I hate what my family has done to everybody. Anyways, I’m fine, thanks for the concern." Rosa replied and walked over to Leo who was standing over Greg. The medic-bot was done stitching Greg’s wounds and the bleeding has stopped, but his condition isn’t getting any better.
"Mr Omal. Mr. Greg’s condition is getting worse," Leo called.
It was always as if they forgot that there was a dying man among them. Greg was a gentle man and he had never really bonded with any of the other teachers. So, whenever he’s in a room, everyone pays no attention to him, and the same was happening now.
"Oh, right," Omal said. "We have to get out of here now. Allan, get up and let’s make a good use of your shadows. Go outside and check for any mecha-man. We’ll come to you later and you’ll help us transport Greg to the hospital wing unseen. We really can’t afford to be noticed by anybody, not even by a student."
"Now everyone needs me. My leg is broken, can’t you see? I can’t walk properly," Allan complained.
"Use the beast sword for support. It can serve as your third leg," Hunter said.
"Yes, use it," Omal agreed.
Resignedly, Allan said, "Okay, I’ll use it. But if you let Hunter get in the covering of my shadow while getting out, I’ll uncloak everyone as soon as we come across a mecha-man. I promise."
"Just go check for danger. Go," Omal said tired.
Allan grabbed the sword nearby and limped out of the corridor to go stand sentry outside with his shadow cloak which made him invisible in the dark.
Omal and Hunter were busy carrying the bodies of the dead Cyborgs into one corner. "What are we going to do with their bodies?" Hunter asked.
"Hell if I know," said Omal. "We can just leave them here. Since there are no other mecha-man witnesses, nobody will know it’s us, I think."
"I wish. Let’s get out here quick. We’ve wasted enough time."
"Oh, the school will be in an uproar when the sun rises. Four dead mecha-men? Oh my starry stars."
The two got busy again, cleaning silently.
Rosa got close to Leo but didn’t get close enough as she used to. She was still conscious of getting too attached to Leo again, to save him from her brothers.
"Hey, can you give me a good reason why you’re here with the teachers picking fights against the Mecha-men? Do you have a death wish?" she asked.
"I owe you no explanation," Leo replied. "Why are you here also? You’re supposed to be in your dorm room asleep. How did you even get here?"
It was like she was waiting to be asked that question. Her face beamed a little as she got ready to narrate.
"Well, I didn’t feel like sleeping, so I sneaked out of the dorm shortly before curfew time. I was practicing my telekinesis quirk... Yunno, I’ve been trying to make myself fly as high as possible so I practiced with the tallest building in the school, which is the second year building. From one storey to the next, I finally got to the roof. It wasn’t an amazing result but it felt good. I was sitting by myself on the roof when I saw two teachers sneak into the second year school with a student. I think one of the teachers was the big teacher over there, and the other is this one dying.
"I wasn’t concerned because they are teachers anyway, they could have had an assignment. But shortly after, I saw two Mecha-men follow them into the building, and that was when I became worried. Keep this a secret, but my dad said the Earth’s council are suspecting some of our teachers of some evil deeds that they are carrying out on students, so that’s why they delegated the Mecha-men to guard the academy at night. Those Mecha-men are ruthless and they fear no one once they are in that suit. Dad also told me that the basic quirks don’t have much effect on their armour. So, I decided to find a way to help the teachers. Don’t ask me why... I hate the Mecha-men so much.
"So I ran to the beast weapon classroom, jumped in through the window and grabbed two beast swords. I didn’t know you’re more than that, I could have brought more.
"But what I don’t know is when you and the others got in. I saw the two teachers with the student, and I know the student isn’t you. How did you and Hunter and Mr. Allan get into the building without me noticing?"
"We used Allan’s shadow quirk. You can’t see us even if you were closer," Leo replied.
"And who is the other student?" Rosa asked.
"I don’t know either," Leo lied.
"Where is he?"
"I don’t know."
"What do you know exactly?"
"Nothing."
"And what are you doing here with the teachers?"
"I can’t tell you."
"Is this the reason the council is suspecting the teachers?"
"I don’t know."
"Are they planning to do something bad to you?"
"No."
"Does this have to do with why Hunter sent me out of his office that day to talk to you?"
"Stop asking questions."
"Please tell me if they want to hurt you guys. I can help you."
"So I can land in another round of trouble with your brothers? No I won’t tell you, and you won’t be helping me, thanks."
Rosa sighed, worry showing visibly on her face. "Why the hell did I have such mean brothers?" she complained silently.
"Anyway, that’s a very insane quirk. It damaged the mecha-man’s armour a little. How did you do it? You should have gotten more than a D-rank, why?" Rosa said.
Leo was uncomfortable with her compliments since he knew it wasn’t a quirk but a device, so he found a way to make her forget her questions about his rank.
"And you? Why did you get a C-rank? Riley said you must have suppressed your powers intentionally during the test. Why did you settle for less when you could have gotten a B- or an A-rank?"
"I have my reasons. And why should I answer your question when you refused to answer mine all along?"
"I guess we’re even now," Leo replied.
"Hey lads. Let’s get out of here!" Omal shouted as he walked closer to them. He grabbed Greg from the floor and lifted him easily onto his shoulder. "Quick, it’s almost dawn."
"Erm, Mr. Omal. What should we do with this one?" Leo asked, pointing to the Cyborg that was still trapped in the blue bubble.
"You should have killed him," Omal said bitterly.
"He begged me and I didn’t," Leo said. "He was scared."
"I see. He wasn’t scared when he tried to kill you, right? You have a lot to learn about this world... Anyway, untrap him, let’s see."
Leo turned his back to Rosa and craftily pushed the button of the device twice while pointing to the bubble. The bubble turned into a thick liquid and flew back into the pen device. The device which was low in power, immediately gained a little charge from the retracted bubble.
"Your quirk is really amazing, Leo," Rosa gushed. Omal smirked.
The Cyborg flopped to the floor weakly. "Please..." he begged. But Omal wasn’t going to hear another word. He bent over and sliced the Cyborg’s neck with the beast sword in his hand. It cut through the flesh and halfway through the robot part. Black blood dripped onto the floor.
"That’s how it is done," Omal said to Leo. "He’d have done to same to you if you were in his position. Now let’s go."
But Leo remembered something. He went back to Greg’s office, opened the door and yelled at Lam who was still sitting on the table. "Get the hell up and let’s go. Omal is waiting for you, fool!"
He saw Lam get down from the table, so he walked away. As he walked closer to the party, he stopped by the Cyborg that Omal killed. With the device carefully tucked under his sleeve, he aimed for the dead Cyborg’s red eyes and pushed the button. The blue laser came short and quick but it shattered the red orb.
"Why that, boy?" Hunter asked.
"I read a long time ago in a comic that their robot eyes are used to see how they are killed. The orb is placed in a machine and it’ll reveal the scene of their death. I don’t know if it’s really true, but we can’t be too careful," Leo said.
"That makes sense. I’m impressed," Omal said with a smile. "Break the other eyes and let’s get out... Lam!"
Lam got out of the room and approached them.
"Let’s go, you slug."
"Isn’t that the Impossible boy?" Rosa whispered to Leo. Leo nodded stiffly. In truth, he doesn’t like it when people call Lam by that name tag, but that was the easiest way to describe him.
Leo destroyed the other Cyborgs’ eyes with the last battery on the device and joined the rest as they got down the stairs. Allan was waiting for them impatiently.
Everyone gathered around Allan as he activated his shadow quirk. "Don’t come close," Allan warned Hunter. Hunter gave a wicked laugh and stood back. Omal shook his head.
"Stay safe kids. I know how to get back without Allan’s foul quirk." Hunter said.
Before they set off, Leo went back to Hunter and said, "thanks for telling me how to attack that Cyborg. He was really confused when I ran towards it. You guessed right, he couldn’t dodge both shots after I got close."
Hunter was confused. He said, "is something wrong with your head now, boy? I only gave you the device and told you to keep your distance when attacking. Why would I tell you to run straight at the cyborg? Am I crazy? Get out of here, boy. Go."
Leo ran back to join the rest, confused. He was sure somebody told him to run straight at the cyborg to confuse him, and the advice has worked. He clearly heard that voice. Only someone who was skilled in combat can give such advice, so Leo thought it was Hunter.
But...
"Wait, is it Loca?"
