Chapter 43: Venn Obert (I)

Dawn came and rumours started spreading faster than the fastest avenger.

The school teachers gathered the best investigators to the scene of the fight at the second-year school, to get some clues that will help get the culprits. But a man called Venn Obert was called from the Earth’s council to take over the case.

Venn Obert was a cunny middle aged fellow popular for carrying out the most advanced cases on earth. With sharp eyes and a proactive brain that worked overtime, he was always eager to settle mind boggling cases such as this. As soon as the steward at Earth’s council called in him, he left his only daughter with the nanny and packed his suitcase. The next day, he landed at Academy one.

Being a Double-wonder, he was mutated to double quirks, and strangely enough, both quirks appear to be on the same level, which isn’t normal for Double-Wonders since one quirk always overshadow the other.

Venn Obert, an S-ranked mutant possessed a lie detector quirk and a questionnaire quirk. The latter was however just made up by the people who have had the misfortune of facing Venn in an interrogation room. These people call it the questionnaire quirk but it is not really true, it only happened that way because Venn has a way of knowing the most difficult and most provoking questions to ask a suspect based on the fact that he can take a sneak peek into your mind.

It would have been named a Mind-reading quirk but Venn can’t accurately know what’s going on in a person’s mind, but he could get a rough idea what the person was thinking and how the person was feeling during the interrogation. And this makes him understand what directions to attack the suspect with questions.

So, since it’s not really mind reading, questionnaire quirk it is.

Both of Venn’s quirk complements each other, from lie detection to solid questions based on one’s feeling. This combo was enough to clear out a crisis in few minutes because his mind knows the hardest questions to ask and his other quirk can tell when one lies.

It’s Monday now and Venn has started his job already.

Yesterday being a Sunday, students weren’t allowed to leave their dorms by the teachers because they feared that whatever had killed four Mecha-men was capable of killing students anytime. Since the culprit or culprits aren’t caught yet, no where was safe for now.

Meanwhile, the teachers involved, Omal, Hunter. Greg and Allan has been lying low since then and separated from their target students as much as possible to avoid suspicion.

Venn Obert, the investigator who loved working alone lurked in a corner in the school, studying the various activities of the day. He has received information from the council that some of the teachers are suspected of some diabolical plans with students against the wish of the council and Venn was here for those teachers as well. So, it will be killing two birds with one stone if Venn can fish out these scheming teachers and find out the killer of the Mecha-men at the same time.

The receiver device rang in his pocket.

"Venn Obert on the line," he said.

"Hey Venn. How is the investigation going?"

"I only just got here, Mr. Greene. I’m getting my things ready."

"Good. And how long do you think this will take you, Venn?"

"To be honest, Mr. Greene, this is a piece of cake. I won’t stay more than three days for both the Mecha-men case and the scheming teachers case. But why do you ask? Are you missing me already?"

Mr. Greene gulped at the other end. "I’m just worried that whatever did that can do you harm also. You must be careful, Venn. The case about the scheming teachers must also be handled carefully. Can you please keep me updated about the teacher’s case?"

"Mr. Greene, I’m not supposed to report to you. The commander is who I report to, not you," Venn replied.

"I’m just concerned about the affairs of that academy. You know I’ll get promoted soon, and I’ll be taking care of Earth’s academy for the council. I just want to be informed about the case of those scheming teachers. I won’t want them becoming a stain under my leadership later."

"Okay, I get it, Mr. Greene. I’ll tell you how it’s going. Thanks for calling."

Venn ended the call before Mr. Greene could speak any further.

"Why is Mr. Greene so bothered about those teachers? He wasn’t even concerned about those dead Mecha-men. What are you planning, Mr. Greene?"

Venn brought out a mint sweet from his pocket, chewed it and inhaled deeply. "Anyways, let’s get started with the Mecha-men case first. Here goes Venn Obert."

"What should I do first? Where should I start from...?"

"...Think, think, think, wait, don’t think much. You’ll ruin everything..."

"...right, I know just what to do."

This is Venn’s way of deciding on his options when he was on a case. It was one of his bad habits that he has no control over. And this happens more frequently depending on how hard the case was. There was a time that a certain case was causing him so much problems that he chattered loud and nonstop to himself for the whole of a day. He’d locked himself up in his room and talked with himself like there was another person in the room with him.

But this case wasn’t so much of a worry for him, so he was expected to chatter less.

"...I really know what to do now..."

"...I’ll stay right at that point," he said pointing to a main road where the student passed when going for their classes every morning. "then I’ll choose my first suspect."

"Yes, that’s right. That’s just what I’ll do, just watch, Venn Obert..."

He saw the students going for breakfast earlier and by his time now, he knew that they should be done with their foods and be on their way to classes.

He walked to the main junction where he pointed earlier and stood majestically while munching merrily on mint sweets.

"Aren’t you a genius, Venn Obert?" he asked himself with a satisfactory smile. "instead of starting the investigation from the battle scene, you decided to lay ambush for your first suspect. You’re really a genius, haha."

"But wait, how am I supposed to know the first ideal suspect? What if I picked the wrong students or teachers..?"

"No, Venn. You can never make such a mistake. Your detection skills are unmatched."

"But is that why you made sure the academy was well aware that an S-ranked investigator is here? Did you do that so that the suspects will get scared when they see you? Then you will easily catch those who appear too uncomfortable around you? Oh Gosh, you’re really a genius, Venn. I really want to be like you."

A third year student walked past Venn when he was deep in his soliloquising.

"Why is this crazy investigator talking to himself? People like you should be locked in an asylum," the boy said, angry at Venn for no reason as he walked past.

"Gosh, the students here have no respect for their elders. Okay, time to concentrate. You’ll fish out that first suspect now, Venn. Here they come. The students. Haha. After getting a couple students, I will drill the teachers to get another suspect."

"I know it’s not likely for this to be a student’s handiwork unless it’s a really high ranking student with formidable quirks that can penetrate the Mecha-men armour, but I must still check them out. But I feel like this dead Mecha-men case is connected to the scheming teachers case, isn’t that right Venn?"

"Yes, that’s right. They must have got caught by those Mecha-men when they were sneaking about during curfew hours, so they had to kill those Mecha-men so they won’t get killed themselves. That’s right, Venn. That’s very right."

"The students are coming now, stop talking and concentrate."

The junction suddenly became crowded with students on their way to the first class of the day.

"I’ll make sure every one of them sees me. Then I’ll maintain a very steady eye contact and with my amazing quirk, I’ll try to feel what each student is feeling. That’s right, Venn. That’s very right."

Troops and troops of students passed, most of them in pairs. The third-years are the first to walk past. Venn felt each person’s general thought as he maintained eye contact. He is trying to see the first person that will look away uncomfortably, but every one of the third-years looked even deeper and more threateningly at him that he was almost forced to look away himself.

"Woah, these seniors are brutal beings. I almost pissed my pants just from their gazes."

"I can’t find anyone from the third-years. Does that mean there’s a student strong enough among the second-years to kill four Mecha-men? Very unlikely, but let’s see."

The second years passed by moments later with almost similar reaction as their seniors. Venn couldn’t feel any discomfort from any of them. One of them even asked him if he wasn’t feeling cold standing outside so early in the morning because of some silly investigation.

"Will you get out of my sight or should I advertise to you my secret mint sweet formula that I got from a dead friend? This mint will keep you warm but set you on fire if you take two at a time, will you try it?" he had replied the student who left him alone instantly.

"Another scary bunch of students. What kind of generation full of cruelty is this?"

"Nobody from the second-years too. I think there is no suspect among the students then, because I’m very sure those first-years are not even settled yet to carry out such atrocity. Hmm, I was wrong to suspect the students."

But as soon as the fresh students started walking past him at the junction, Venn had a second thought instantly.

"Why is their aura so confusing?" Venn was alarmed.

The freshmen trooped past with gloomy faces and dark expressions. Venn saw a red-haired boy leading the troop with a white-haired boy of the same height and age. As they both walked past, the redhead snapped his fingers while holding a steady gaze with Venn. Fire sparks crackled in his fingers as he snapped them. The other white-haired boy formed an arrow shape with ice while pointing is threateningly at Venn.

Venn wasn’t scared but he was shocked that these bunch of freshmen had a more threatening aura than their seniors.

"This generation is doomed," Venn concluded.

In the middle of the crowd, he saw a girl with brown hair walking alone but her head was bowed as if she was trying to hide her face.

"This is surprising, but I think I’ve seen my first suspect," Venn smiled.

The girl got closer and it was clear that she was really hiding her face. Venn was not fully convinced that she was hiding yet, so he checked her general thoughts and aura. Only then did he know that she really has some dark secrets she was hiding.

"Hey, brown hair girl. You have to come with me to the interrogation room. You will be having classes with me for today. Come over."

The students walked away faster from Venn, scared of being called as well despite their innocence. The brown-haired girl walked to Venn with a cowering expression.

"What is your name?" Venn asked.

"R-Rosa. Rosalie Morningbolt, sir," she was shaking.

"Oh, it’s a Morningbolt. Isn’t this interesting, Venn? That’s right. That’s very right... You see girl, you have to follow me, I don’t care what family you belong to."

Rosa was shaking despite herself but at the same time, she was stylishly looking behind at the other students walking past. She was looking for someone, to see if they had passed or not.

She finally saw them as they got closer to where she stood with Venn.

Venn looked away from Rosa and tried to scan the other students to see if he could find another suspect, as the first-years appeared to be more suspicious than he thought. His eyes was about to fall upon a lean boy with thin sharp eyes and messy black hair when Rosa activated her quirk.

With a slight motion of her finger, Rosa brought up sand from the ground in an unsuspecting manner and aimed them at Venn’s eyes.

Venn thrashed about, trying to get sand out of his eyes. He was practically blind at the moment.

As Venn battled with himself, brushing his eye lids with thick fingers, trying to see the students even more, Leo and Lam walked past.
