Chapter 175: You idiot

Damon tumbled out into blinding white light.

Snow. Wind. Freedom.

He hit the ground hard, rolled down an icy incline, and came to a stop as his body hit a huge frozen rock. His armor was in tatters. His shield was gone. His mana was nearly drained. But he was alive, and he was out of that mind-fuck prison.

Wait. The others were still inside, and then he remembered Aurora! That blinding white radiance! It had to be her who had sent the attack that completely broke down the wall and gave the final nudge he needed to get the hell out.

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! What happened? Is she still alive? All sorts of messy thoughts ran through Damon’s mind as he shot back into the breach once again, against his better judgment.

He couldn’t. He just couldn’t ignore her. No matter how much he knew this was a bad idea, he simply couldn’t leave the woman behind, especially knowing that she had helped him out at such a crucial time. He was a villain through and through, but this was his bottom line.

He couldn’t let someone who helped him die, or maybe even worse. What happened when someone entered the void?

He did not know. He did not have the time right now to think about the answer to that question. He needed to get her out, or he would carry that regret for the rest of his life.

The moment Damon crossed back into the breach, it felt like being punched in the soul. The pressure hit him all at once, gravity twisted sideways, and space shimmered like warped glass

His body screamed in protest. His vision blurred. But he pushed through. Thankfully, the void hole was much smaller now because of which he was able to get more control.

Pieces of the corridor floated in the air, suspended mid-collapse. Electrical sparks danced along shattered metal beams, frozen in space, and half-pulled toward the singularity.

Then he saw her.

Aurora was hovering just a few meters from the edge of the collapse, barely.

A shimmering golden light enveloped her body, wings of divine energy flaring erratically from her back, flickering as if about to die.

Her eyes were shut tight, lips muttering some desperate prayer through gritted teeth. One arm was stretched behind her, holding back the last tendril of the void’s pull. Her staff was gone, her robes torn, and blood trailed from her mouth. But she was there. Holding on.

"Stupid woman," Damon growled through clenched teeth, shooting forward.

"I swear, if you die now, I’m going to fucking resurrect you just so I can slap you! Why would you help me when you yourself are in this pathetic state? Why do you want me to trust you so badly? What are you plotting this time?"

He dove into the spiraling debris, twisting through collapsing matter and void currents. One wrong move and he’d be sucked right in. But he made it.

Just as Aurora’s light sputtered out, he reached her. "Got you!" he snarled, grabbing her waist and pulling her into his chest. The divine light shattered the moment he touched her, but Damon didn’t stop. He wrapped his hands around her and teleported.

Shadowstep failed.

Blink failed.

"Fuck it. I will brute force my way out again!" Damon shouted with determination as he once again somehow hauled their asses out of there. His blood archives were completely emptied out now, and he had used more than twenty potions when they finally got the hell out of there.

They emerged somewhere in the frozen lands, tumbling into the snow once more, Aurora coughing violently as Damon crumpled beside her, gasping.

Blood Reign didn’t say a word. For once, even she was silent.

Aurora blinked weakly. "You... came back for me..."

"...You idiot," Damon wheezed, turning his head slightly toward her. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

Aurora tried to smile, but it turned into another bout of coughing, specks of blood flecking the snow. Her divine aura was flickering around her like a broken flame, more pain than power now. She looked like a fallen star, dimmed and shivering.

Damopn quickly shoved a potion down her throat, half of which she coughed up and spit out. But the remaining amount was more than enough to bring some color to her cheeks.

Damon growled, dragging himself up onto one elbow. His body felt like it had been chewed up and spit out by a spatial blender, and every cell inside him protested. The two of them sat silently beside each other as the hellish freezing cold never felt better.

After they both had some time to recover, Aurora finally spoke up. "I wasn’t playing any game," she said softly. "If you died in there, none of us were getting out. Not me, not your friends, not the others. You’re the only one who could break through that place." She paused, breath fogging in the air. "That’s not manipulation. That’s a fact."

Damon stared at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then he exhaled through his nose and let himself fall back into the snow with a soft thud. "...You’re still an idiot."

Aurora smiled. The two of them sat in silence again, waiting for that whole thing to die out. The scene in front of the metallic wall was kind of a spectacle at the moment. A huge chunk had been torn off and snow from the surroundings was being sucked into the whole mess.

The two of them kept a close eye on it to make sure that the hole actually doesn’t end up self-repairing itself. The others were still trapped inside. They needed to get back in to get them out.

However, the small void hole seemed to take its own sweet time. The two of them could only patiently wait at the moment. As they stared in silence at the blackhole at work, Aurora once again spoke slowly.

"Umm... I... if you don’t mind... could you show me your fangs? Can I touch them and see? Umm... please?"
