Chapter 29: Honoring the memory of those we love... it’s the cross all the living must bear

"So you had political ambitions, too." Sahara observed Daemon with a piercing gaze, her monocle reflecting the faint light of their surroundings.

"Tsk, what do you know about it?" Daemon neither confirmed nor denied, but his silence was an answer in itself. Recruiting Lucas wasn’t just about future power—it was a piece on the chessboard, an asset he intended to shape before Eden could corrupt him. He would act first.

"What’s the plan?" Sahara asked, arms crossed.

"I’ll give you a chance... to properly influence his mind."

They walked in silence to the farthest room in the infirmary, their footsteps echoing in the deserted hallway. Outside Lucas’s door, Daemon stopped.

*Knock – Knock*

"Obviously, there won’t be an answer." Sahara snickered.

Daemon opened the door anyway, without waiting for an invitation.

"Daemon Leen Indivar, greeting Prince Lucas."

Lying on his bed, eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, Lucas slowly turned his head toward the intruder. His face was pale, hollowed by dark circles, as if he hadn’t slept in ages—and indeed, he hadn’t.

"Daemon? What the hell are you doing here?" His voice was weak, laden with bitter exhaustion.

Lucas wasn’t just a prince without influence—he was a cursed heir. Born into an imperial family devoted to angels, with a lineage inheriting the light of Luciel, he had inherited the most despised affinity: Darkness. His very existence was an insult. His elder brother, despite forced smiles, looked at him with hidden fear, worried his younger brother might become a mass-murdering heretic. His father, the emperor, saw him only as the murderer of his mother, who died giving birth to him, even though he behaved as a loving father as best he could. And let’s not even mention his cousin who bullied him.

In such a loveless environment, it’s no wonder he ended up as a depressed guy, blaming himself for his affinity.

In the future, he would become friends with Eden, who would push him to become a Heretic. But Daemon would take the lead. They didn’t know all the knowledge or tricks of an Eden from the thirtieth loop, and before he could regain his memories, Daemon had to change as much as possible.

"I wish to invite you to Kara’s faction." Daemon smiled faintly. "You don’t want to join your elder brother, do you?"

"Get out." Lucas sat up, his black eyes gleaming with cold anger. "I won’t join Leonard’s faction, let alone your damn factions."

"Without a faction, it’s going to be tough. Even for you, a prince."

"Don’t bother trying to persuade me." Lucas growled. "You think I’m stupid enough to fall for your game?"

Sahara opened her mouth, but Daemon raised a hand to stop her.

"I guess I don’t need to lie, prince." His voice turned sharp, contemptuous. "Everyone knows you’re a worthless piece of trash."

[What!?]

Even Sahara raised an eyebrow, surprised by the brutality of his words.

"You have no political influence. You got slapped by a commoner during the evaluation. In my book, you’re not even worth a cow’s dung."

Lucas stiffened, his fingers digging into the sheets.

"Your mother must have cheated on the emperor. Impossible there’s a son as useless as you."

"Don’t talk about my mother." Lucas’s voice trembled, but not with fear—with rage.

"What? She’s the queen of whores—"

*BOOM*

Darkness exploded.

In an instant, the room was engulfed in absolute, suffocating blackness, as if the shadows themselves had materialized to snuff out all light. Lucas’s hair floated, his face contorted beneath a mask of shifting shadows, and a cloak of darkness enveloped his shoulders.

Resonance.

A rare phenomenon, even among the Chosen. Without training, without mastery, Lucas had unleashed a power that, one day, could rival Eden’s.

"Now." Daemon murmured, a smile on his lips.

Sahara adjusted her monocle, fascinated.

Sahara raised a hand, her fingers brushing the air. Three blades suddenly floated around her, vibrating, sharpened by her telekinesis. With a swift gesture, she hurled them at Lucas.

*Shiing! Shiing! Shiing!*

The blades sliced through the air—but Lucas, still enveloped in darkness, caught them barehanded, crushing them until they shattered into metallic fragments. The pieces clattered to the floor with a sinister clang, while his eyes, rolled back, stared into the void before him.

Black tentacles burst from the ground, whipping the air with bestial violence. One struck Sahara in the chest, but she met it with a barrier of waves.

Seizing the moment as the shadows regrouped for another attack, she leaped, drawing her cane-sword in a fluid motion. The blade sparkled, silver with slashes.

In less than a second, she sliced Lucas’s shadow mask into twenty precise cuts. Each gash left behind a fleeting trail of light before the mask dissolved into silvery shards, like glass shattered under moonlight. Of course, even though Lucas could rival a three-star despite being only a one-star, Sahara was still levels above him.

Lucas staggered.

But he didn’t fall.

Eyes still rolled back, body trembling under the grip of Resonance, he remained standing, shadows crackling around him.

"You might think you’re worthless... but look around you." She extended a hand, gesturing to the swirling darkness. "All this power... You can tame it. And then, you can wander the Infernal Planes, hunt the Archdemon who cursed you... and rip out its heart."

Lucas breathed heavily, his body trembling with the effort of control.

"Daemon and I..." Sahara continued, "We’re not master and subordinate. We’re allies. Each with our own goals."

A silence.

"Moping here, enduring mockery, scornful looks... Not using your affinity?" She shook her head. "You’ll live as a victim... and die as a victim."

Even though there was only silence, with the help of the monocle, these words full of nonsense were directly transmitted into his brain.

The shadows wavered.

"The best you can do..." Sahara lowered her voice, almost compassionate, "is to honor your mother’s death. And become someone she’d be proud of."

Daemon added, in an oddly sincere tone:

"That’s what I strive to do every day. Honoring the memory of those we love... it’s the cross all the living must bear."

The darkness slowly dissipated.

Lucas, on his knees, breath short, raised his head...

Sahara extended her hand with a slight smile, "So, prince, will you help us mutually to achieve our goals together?"

Lucas took her hand.

"Even in my wildest dreams, I wouldn’t have thought I’d ally with an elf? And this guy?" He chuckled to himself.

And for the first time, his eyes gleamed with a new light, but also with a slight blush on his cheeks that Daemon noticed.

Lucas might not realize it, but he was already hooked. You’ll obey this woman from now on.

Daemon shook his head. His goal was achieved for now. But there was much to address, watching the fights, he couldn’t wait to copy a talent, he should start maintaining his body in the meantime and also check the new system notifications.
