Chapter 99
Chapter 99: Chapter 99
Luan opened his eyes and saw a massive forest surrounding him. As he slowly got up and leaned against a nearby tree, he carefully inspected his surroundings.
[Kill the ogre king and defend your fortress that will be swarmed by beast tides.]
A single sentence floated in his sight. "I guess that’s the mission I need to complete," he muttered, still inspecting his surroundings.
"Wait! What the hell? Why is it so difficult!" he shouted as he abruptly shot up.
Rubbing his temples, he tried to calm himself down. "I was rather certain I could complete anything but this? Is it because of what happened in the box?" He said, talking to no one in particular while he was walking through the forest.
He had to do a couple of things now; first, he had to find the fortress he had to defend. He had no idea why he wasn’t just dropped inside it, but whatever, he had to at least find it before the beast tide arrived, or he would fail one of the two before even being able to defend it.
Walking through the forest while keeping his guard up, he sent his spirits to fly around and also look for the fortress. The more eyes he had to help, the better.
So Mara, Vira, and Torg all split up, flying in a different cardinal direction, and Luan went north. While he was rushing through the forest by jumping from one branch to another, he dodged all confrontations with monsters that he came across.
At first there were only animals, but as he went further and further north, he saw various powerful monsters. Ranging from hobgoblins to trolls and even some lone ogres.
Well, it made sense if he had to kill the ogre king for the mission that meant this forest was most likely ruled by that ogre king. So ogres were the top predator, making it so they could run around freely and all alone.
While deep in thought and taking mental notes about all the monsters he came across, he suddenly spotted the end of the forest, and then he saw it.
A singular building stood there atop what looked like a plain, with nothing around it as far as he could see. It was only that fortress with nothing behind it and in front of it that massive forest.
"So the beast tide will probably come from the forest," Luan muttered as countless ideas formed in his head. He had to start making thorough preparations immediately, or else he would fail miserably.
If he focused solely on defending from the beast tides, he could at least complete half of the objective, and after completing that, he could try his hand at hunting the ogre king. Even if that was basically impossible right now.
Snapping his finger, all three spirits appeared above him. "It starts now. Mara and you, Torg, form a large river surrounding the fortress; make it deep and very wide," Luan ordered while rushing toward the fortress to check out what the inside would look like.
’Will I have helpers, or do I have to do it alone?’ He thought to himself, he was hoping there would be soldiers or anything inside it, but you can never be sure. If there weren’t, the objective would become basically impossible.
When he arrived in front of the fortress, luckily he saw guards standing in front of the door.
"Hello, my name is Luan," he greeted them.
When the guards noticed Luan, they immediately bowed. "Welcome back, General!" they shouted in unison.
Something clicked inside Luan’s mind. ’He did say it was random, but doesn’t this tailor toward my ruler sigil?’ he thought, then the things that happened inside the black box echoed through his mind.
’An error, maybe? That’s why?’ He shrugged. "Open the gates. I was just checking inside the forest, and it seems multiple beast tides will be coming soon. No one is allowed to leave without my explicit permission," he ordered.
The guards looked horrified when they heard his words. Glancing at each other, they immediately opened the gates, and after Luan entered, they rushed inside, closing the gates tightly.
"Spread the word! Oh, and can one of you guide me to my office?" Luan ordered while scratching his forehead.
The guards looked confused at one another, but they didn’t question the general. They were just lowly guards, and the general had been overseeing them for months without any failures.
"Follow me, general," one of the guards politely said with a deep bow.
And together they made their way through the fortress; Luan was amazed by everything he saw. Fields being tilled and people maintaining their weapons. It looked like a small village.
Going up multiple stories, they finally arrived in front of a room that was situated on the highest floor of one of the outlook towers. With a single word written on the door.
"General"
"Thank you. Make sure to spread the word and take good care of your weapons and rest up." With that, Luan entered the room and closed the door tightly behind him.
Looking outside the tiny window, he saw Mara and Torg forming a massive river around the castle; with a satisfied nod, he took a seat at the single desk with a massive stack of papers on it.
Reading through it carefully, he finally got a grasp of the situation inside the fortress. There were knights, mages, and even civilians. With careful documentation, the general must have been very capable.
Then the objectives flashed through his mind once more: "I’ll need to carefully plan everything out. If even one thing is off, everything will fail," he mumbled while reading through more and more documents.
Like that, hours passed, and after a short sleep, he had finally combed through all the documents and gotten a good grasp on the situation.
There were multiple divisions, each with a division leader, with the general being the highest power.
