Chapter 98: Chapter 98
After that, all the other students went to fight Mateo one by one. The first few did pretty decently, lasting a couple of minutes, but as fewer and fewer were left, the time they managed to last drastically shortened.
Abigail just kept scribbling notes in her notebook, but with each student lasting shorter and shorter, she just sighed as she rubbed her temples.
"Well, he does like to go overboard," she muttered to herself. She knew Mateo fairly well, and he was very powerful.
So these students that had awakened for barely a year, lasting a short time, were normal; with that mindset, the disappointment in her eyes lessened.
Mateo, on the other hand, just looked extremely bored. The first couple of students had given him a slight thrill, but the ones after that... They barely lasted half a minute; rolling his eyes after he knocked down the last one, he leisurely picked the student up and made his way toward the other students and Abigail.
"Follow me; we will now be going toward the next test venue." After saying that, he jumped off the training ground and strolled further inside.
Everyone else followed close behind, and half an hour later they arrived in front of a pitch-black box about the size of a human. With a crimson door.
"Once you enter this box, your mind will be transported to the simulation you will need to continue. It is totally random, and we only have one of these boxes. But don’t worry, inside the simulated world, time is accelerated, so even if it takes you a week, only about half an hour will have passed here." He calmly explained.
"So I don’t want to hear any excuses for not completing the objective. If you don’t complete it, getting admitted will be rather difficult; while not totally impossible, it will be extremely hard."
After he said that, he looked with a grin on his face at Luan. "You want to go first?" he inquired.
"Sure, why not. So I just enter that room, and then it starts?" Luan casually said, while walking toward the crimson door.
Mateo nodded. "That’s right, and don’t worry about what you do. Abigail and I will be watching everything and judging your performance from strategy to combat proficiency."
Then Luan opened the door and entered the room. The moment he stepped inside, the door outside slammed shut, and he was left in a small box; everything around him was black.
He sighed and leaned against the wall, awaiting the simulation to start.
[Detected lifeform, starting body and sigil scan.]
Luan suddenly opened his eyes wide at the voice that he suddenly heard in his head; he looked around to see if there was anyone else, but he still couldn’t see anything as it was pitch black.
But he felt that something was analyzing his whole body and even his soul, where his sigil was imprinted.
Then a while later.
[Scan completed!] [Error! anomaly detected.] [Forming simulation world.] [Forming failed!] [Retrying...]
"This doesn’t seem too good," Luan muttered, carefully paying attention to all the messages he heard in his head.
Was it because he had two sigils? Or something else? He had no idea, but he felt it must be because one of those things could feel that his soul had replaced the original owner’s soul, or maybe even worse, they had merged, affecting his original personality.
[Simulated world formed. Sending soul over.] [Best of luck, anomaly. May Sigurus be with you!]
Then Luan lost consciousness, and his soul was transported into the digital world.
Outside the small box, Mateo and Abigail looked worriedly at the black screen where normally Luan should have appeared almost instantly, but nothing was happening.
And to their dismay, they couldn’t reopen the box after someone entered it until he had cleared or died in the simulation.
"What’s going on?" Mateo whispered to Abigail, trying not to let anyone notice something was up.
"I have no idea, as this thing has never malfunctioned as far as I know. But let’s wait a while longer, and after we will have to notify that person." She replied, glancing around.
When he heard her reply, his expression turned from concern to disgust. "Tsk! Let’s hope that doesn’t happen," he said, staring at the black screen.
When suddenly it lit up and they saw Luan appear, he was lying on the ground.
"It seems it just took a while longer for him." Mateo stated, clearly relieved.
Abigail’s worries also lessened significantly, and even though she despised Luan’s attitude, that didn’t mean she wanted anything to happen to him. If something did happen, she and Mateo would have had to explain it to the Emperor and Empress.
Which she absolutely didn’t want to do.
"Now it’s time to focus and properly judge him." She muttered, her notebook out, and stared intensely at the small message that appeared at the top of the screen.
[Kill the ogre king and defend your fortress that will be swarmed by beast tides.]
Abigail almost dropped her notebook; her hands trembled uncontrollably. "What the hell?" she blurted out as she looked around.
Everyone else was also frozen in place; that mission was basically impossible. Beast Tides alone was insanely difficult already, but also killing an ogre king? How was any student supposed to accomplish that?
Liana’s whole complexion paled just thinking about the future. If Luan were to fail his mission, that would mean it would be basically impossible to enroll in the imperial academy.
But maybe, just maybe, they might make an exception for an impossibly difficult mission like this? Right?
Mateo just stared at the mission, reading it over and over. Had he gone insane? There is no way the box would assign a mission like that to a student during the entrance exam, right?
He rubbed his eyes a couple of times and read it again, but the text on the screen didn’t change.
"Um, Abi, what should we do with this?" He inquired.
Abigail just stared at the screen and didn’t know what to reply with.
"How about we first see how he does and after decide if we will change the requirement to clear the objective?" She proposed.
Mateo gave her a thumbs-up. "Great idea. Let’s go with that. I knew I could count on you."
