Sigil Online: I became the duke's third son -
Chapter 100
Chapter 100: Chapter 100
Seated in his room, Luan looked outside at the wide river that now surrounded the whole fortress. Mara and Torg had done a great job.
"I don’t know when the tides will start, so I’ll have to start preparing asap. To not be caught off guard," he muttered to himself while leaving his room.
He quickly went down toward the dining hall, where multiple hundreds of people were currently eating. He had seen it yesterday while the guard was guiding him toward his room.
When he entered the hall, everyone gave him a polite nod and went right back to eating. Their eyes devoid of any hope, they looked like dolls.
Eat, fight, sleep, repeat. That was what they had been doing since their country had fallen. Only the general was able to save a small amount of the population together with his private army.
After Luan grabbed a plate of what looked to be mashed potatoes and a piece of bread, he knew things weren’t looking good.
After quickly eating it up, he made his way all the way down toward the training grounds, where he found the people he was looking for. The division leaders and the members of the divisions.
Clearing his throat loudly, he looked at them all. "Division leaders, assemble right now!" he ordered, and with that he left without waiting for an answer.
The division leaders quickly left the training grounds as well, following behind Luan. They made their way all the way up an outlook tower. Once there, Luan quickly formed a table out of earth and made a miniature castle surrounded by the river and the forest to the south of it.
"So I made a river surrounding the fortress when I returned from the forest yesterday; this should help us a little. Did you hear about the beast tides?" Luan inquired, curious about their personalities and combat prowess.
A woman with fiery red hair and red eyes widened her eyes at the table that just appeared out of nowhere together with the miniature fortress. She didn’t feel any fluctuation of magic power when the general did that.
"Yes, we did." She replied, "But are you sure that will actually happen?" She asked the question that all of them had. How could he know that it would happen? There had been no signs of that happening the last couple of weeks.
"I know it might sound hard to believe, but trust me, it will happen. Also, I spotted an ogre king in the forest. But please keep that between us." Luan said, placing his index finger in front of his mouth.
When they heard that, they all gasped. An ogre king? If that thing came together with the beast tide, they would no doubt all die without being able to fight back.
With wide eyes they stared at Luan for a while before he clapped his hands and made them all snap out of it.
"But he probably won’t be able to come during the beast tide, as he is most likely the leader of that forest, and if he leaves, his place might be taken." He explained.
Only after he said that did the division leaders relax. "So why did you want us all to come here?" the woman asked, glancing at the miniature fortress.
Luan’s eyes turned serious as he pointed at the river surrounding the fortress. "I want to take a more passive approach to dealing with the beast tides. What I mean by that is inside the river we will first place soldiers with shields and spears, and behind them magicians, who use large spells to try and diminish the number of monsters, and using the river the soldiers with spears can make sure no monsters can cross it." Luan seriously started explaining his strategy.
Even if it wasn’t perfect, it was a start, and if they had any better ideas or improvements, they could suggest those as well.
"Then we can also start eating the monsters and even using their body parts for other things, like making weapons or fertilizing the products. I know people will push back against it at first because they are monsters, but we need proper nutrition to survive a crisis like this."
The division leaders glanced at one another. It made sense logically what the general said, but still, eating the creatures that destroyed their home country? And going against their religion?
"I’m sorry, but we cannot do that." A well-built older man said, while stepping forward.
Luan’s eye twitched a couple of times, but he stayed calm; he had to. If he lost his temper over something like this, things might worsen fast; this was, after all, a desperate situation.
"And why is that, Dimitri?" Luan demanded.
"Why else? That goes against the sacred doctrine issued by the church," he stated, glaring at Luan.
Luan was speechless; he just stood there staring at Dimitri with his eyes wide. "So you would rather die than break a meaningless piece of paper that the church decided to create because they’re an elitist bunch," he blurted out.
Dimitri looked in disbelief at Luan. He just said they were an elitist bunch? And that they created it? Not heard from Nylar?
"Can you take responsibility for those words, General?" he demanded, clenching his fist.
"What responsibility? Aren’t I trying to help everyone survive and protect us from the beast tides? So even if we manage to fight them off, you would rather die because the church that is completely destroyed issued a so-called sacred doctrine?" Luan was losing his temper; this wasn’t just about passing.
There was no need for these people to suffer so needlessly because of some piece of paper; he would do his absolute best to have as many of them survive as possible.
Dimitri was speechless; his whole world was shattering. He had always been a devout believer in the creator God Nylar.
And the church that worshipped that God was the one that issued the sacred doctrine, but what the general said also made sense; even if he didn’t want to admit it, he was afraid of death, and he wanted to survive.
But to discard all his beliefs for that? His whole demeanor started faltering as his mind started spiraling out of control.
